Milan wins a crazy match 2-3 vs Madrid at the Bernabeu. Pellegrini is on the hot seat, I imagine.

There's something about a player who always believes in the play. It's like a trailer in the fast break, you don't assume the basketball is going in, you follow the play. That's what Raul does. I don't care who rags on him, he has the gift of goal....

Manchester United is planning to add another 20.000 seats at Old Trafford. With 95.000 capacity the Manchester stadium will be 2nd largest in Europe after Camp Nou.
Biggest "soccer-only" stadium remains "Aztec" in Mexico city with ~105.000.
The arena with most seats is "Estadio May 1st" in North Korea with a seating capacity of 150.000.

Third division! Or is it 4th? Goes to shut up those who complained about how much Real spent. Money doesn't guarantee anything. You hear that, Laporta, Platini?
I missed both of the games. I really can't watch these midweek games, only sometimes when schedule allows it, but I imagine they played horrible cause Van der Vaart scored at the 82 minute mark. so it took them some 172 minutes to score a single goal on Unicorn, or whatever the name of the team is.
We need Bernard at the helm again.

The guys, who outscored Real in the first leg are 3 divisions below the primera division and they defended hard today. It was an awesome match. Barcelona went to a 5-0.
Meanwhile germany is shocked about the suicide of German National Keeper Roberto Enke. He was driven over by a train at 6 pm local. Enke leaves behind his wife and his 8 month year old kid, who the couple adopted after their 2 y old daughter died of heart malfunction some years ago.
Enke was 32 years old.

Sorry about the loss. Did he commit the awful act of suicide or was ran over by a train?
EDIT: Apparently, he suicided.

No, I think Naldo got injured before the game and couldn't play. Diego wasn't called, even though he was testing some new people. I think the coach just doesn't like his game.

Typical situation, imo. The Referee stopped a scorrer shortly before the goalsituation and was afraid to show some balls. Under league-match circumstances, the goal would not have count.
Btw. With Shea Given in the box the chances to beat the french would have been not that bad.

yeah, France was offsides (i don't think it was actually Henry that was offsides, but they definitely were). But that could be the most blatant handball i've ever seen (and that includes ones that were actually called!).

At the U19 ? championships they tested goal referees. I hope they will be established asap. Three officials can´t cover a 50 x 100 meter field.
Last year on the opening gameday of the Deutsche Bundesliga we had a regular goal after a 2 or even 2,5 m offside position. Sometimes that´s ridiculous.
If Henry had scored for Cali, he would have been shot right on the field.

http://www.11strong.com/ref?referral=scoobay
got started on this 'fantasy' soccer game - maybe this has been posted before but seems pretty cool. if interested, maybe can get a team together though perhaps someone with more soccer knowledge can manage.

Freakin hilarious...as many times as I've seen my teams get screwed by bad calls, I finally see my team get the advantage due to a blown call.
Kudos to Henry for not shying away from what happened in his post-game comments.
Kudos to France for advancing...if Ireland wanted to advance then they should have not let it come down to this one goal.
These are the things that happen when you continue to allow the human element to be a factor in athletics.
I'll take this win...even if it's backing your way into the World Cup!!!
That being said, will we see Soccer move to a replay system at some point in the future?
Vive La France!!!

92Dad, i can honestly say you are the LAST person i would ever have expected to utter the words "Viva La France". You seem like the kind that would only eat Freedom Fries.
Goal refs are a great idea. Limit their calls only to things that happen in the box, for those purists that don't want things to be changed too much.

seriously?????? this is SOCCER! how many soccer games have resulted in a 1-0 score. i'd say probably 75% of all games, ever!
that's a ridiculous statement to try and cover up a TRAVESTY of officiating.

No doubt the officiating or actually the lack of some type of replay system...SUCKED!!! Travesty indeed.
As for my support of France, hey...I'm French!!!
Typically, I tell folks that I'm a "French-Texan"...I'm full of Pride and full of Crap!!! You decide which part of my cultural heritage is best associated with either reference :-)
That being said...I'm trying to keep my Politics in the political forum...this is sports and sports only. My reference of "Vive La France" is in regards to "Le Bleu" Now that they have advanced, regardless of reason...they can chase the Cup!!!
Back to the match and the hand-ball...it sucks for Ireland, no doubt!!! It also points to the advantage of using modern technology to overcome faults of human error.
That hand ball, like the Felix Jones fumble recovery...can be helped by technology...but for some reason, some folks insist that Human Element makes the games better?

French qualified, but that squad ain't going nowhere as currently constituted. 2002-redux?
The French national team's players "price tag" so to speak, is a lot more than Ireland's. In fact, they're the 3rd "most expensive" national team. Quite frankly, they need to fire the coach or something. They can't be playing at this level with the players they have at their disposal. Is Ribery in poor form? Benzema is in poor form. Has Anelka done anything lately? Henry hasn't played well in months.

They're actually calling that particular event in the ireland game "Hand of Frog" in a reference to Maradona's "Hand of God"

Goal refs are not a good idea at all IMO. Most of the game they will just stand around doing nothing. Difficult situations in the box only come up once in a while. More importantly the goal refs can do nothing about the most annoying part of soccer reffing: offsides. Right now it´s just a lottery whether the refs get those calls right. What they should do IMO is implement video replay with two challanges per coach per half. And they should just get rid of the offsides rule. That´s what field hockey did after they realised the game became too fast to call it consistently. Getting rid of offsides has worked great in field hockey. Made the game faster and more attractive, took away all the blown calls.
The reffing in soccer is so bad right now, it allowed for American Football to become my Nr 1 sport. And I´ve been a soccer fan for 25 years, and I´m from Germany (I´m still a soccer fan, but the bad reffing has made it allmost unwatchable for me, just like the NBA).

The goalie must've touched it very slightly; I'm pretty sure you cannot score a goal, own goal or otherwise, from a throw-in. In fact, I think there's a rule that doesn't even allow you to score an own-goal directly from a foul kick. Some weird, obscure rules.

We had this once. Uwe Reinders from Bremen took the throw-in and Jean-Marie Pfaff was the goalkeeper.
Wonderful.
