Default Yup, he's dreaming

THIS is the guy you want to put into office? He's a complete panderer. So do you believe this?
Kerry said Friday that the best way to ensure Social Security's future is with policies that bolster the economy and raise workers' wages, letting them contribute more to the program.

"I guarantee you, the first best thing to do to protect Social Security is to put America back to work in jobs that pay more," he said.

MacGuineas said she disagrees with Kerry's assessment that a few minor changes here and there will keep the system afloat, and his position that a stronger economy can solve Social Security's problems.

"Those are pretty darn large tweaks we're talking about," she said, adding that economic growth alone won't bolster the program because workers' benefits increase as their wages rise, increasing the future obligations of the system.

A number of government studies have come to the conclusion that the baby boom wave will force the government to cut benefits, raise taxes or push back the retirement age to preserve the benefits.

Kerry ruled many of those options out.

Quote:
"I will never privatize Social Security. I will not cut Social Security benefits. And I will not raise the retirement age," he said.
So the only thing that is left is RAISE TAXES.

This is freaking unbelievable. After reading this, I wouldn't vote for Kerry if the Repub candidate was Pat Buchanan. Seriously - this is one of the most ignorant statements I've ever heard from a presidential candidate. They've all said their share of ignorant things, but this is quite a demonstration of how well one understands economics when he/she spends his/her adult lifetime chasing heiresses.

I can tolerate lots of things, but this statement is about as wise as your average fourth grader asking, "why don't we just print more money?"

Your discount of his statement is a bit narrowminded.

The SS system as it is now set up works fine if there is ever increasing worker pool paying into the system. He's right that if the number contributing ncreases, with greater increases in average contribution, SS can pay out it's obligations to beneficiaries today.

no, that's not true, for instance benefits could be held static.

Yes and since there are NOT an ever increasing worker pool paying into the system, he might as well be saying that the tooth fairy will be coming around to bail it out. Give me a break md, you know this.

Yes you are correct but in the parlance of washington (as you also know) that would ultimately be a cut in purchasing power. At best this is an attempt by kerry to misguide the voters. Good grief, you are an intelligent person, why do you bother to post such dribble.
