Report: Aikman might return
From Staff and Wire Reports
Former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman might come out of retirement to play for the Miami Dolphins in 2002, according to an ABC News Radio report Sunday night.
The report is consistent with Aikman's stance - after he retired April 9 - that he wouldn't rule out a possible return to the NFL, if the situation were right.
Sources have told ABC News Radio that the Dolphins, who were eliminated Sunday from the NFL playoffs by the Baltimore Ravens, and Aikman made "informal contact" long before the playoffs began.
Norv Turner, Aikman's close friend and former Cowboys offensive coordinator, gives the Miami scenario some credence, at least in theory.
ABC News Radio indicated that Aikman might be willing to join the Dolphins, regardless of where Turner is coaching next season, but that a deal would be "clinched" if the Dolphins were to hire Turner.
Aikman, an NFL analyst for Fox Sports, could not be reached for comment Sunday night.
Aikman, 35, retired after 12 NFL seasons with 10 known career concussions, including four in his past 20 starts over the 1999-2000 seasons.
"I still wanted to play, and I just can't do it anymore," Aikman said in April.
He was waived March 7 by the Cowboys for health reasons and salary-cap issues. ABC News Radio reported that Aikman is comfortable with his health issues and is 99 percent certain he wants to play next season in Miami.
A source close to the Dolphins downplayed the radio report Sunday night, saying that it will have some merit only when, and if, Turner is hired by coach Dave Wannstedt as offensive coordinator. Wannstedt and Turner worked together on Jimmy Johnson's staff in Dallas. Chan Gailey resigned as Dolphins' offensive coordinator to become coach at Georgia Tech.
Turner is still a candidate for the San Diego head-coaching job after serving as the Chargers' offensive coordinator in 2001.
