Mavs Free Agency Rumors: Nicolas Batum (NOPE)
@espn_macmahon: Hornets small forward Nicolas Batum is expected to meet with the Mavericks in free agency, according to a league source.
@nicolas88batum: Off to Dallas. See you in 2 weeks Paris!

LETS GO
With the Wes connection, I like this.
Still means one of PG/C will take a backseat if Batum gets on board.

I really like this!
I have never thought Conley would get done, and I think it's imperative that the Mavs come out of this summer with two really good players in addition to Dirk.
I like Batum as a player, and I like his versatility. For instance, I would be fine rolling with Deron Williams as the point guard again if Batum is playing the 3. I think that's a pretty mixing of roles.

Not that much. If Batum comes, it means Parsons is gone. With Parsons off the books we are sitting at about 32mill with the cap expected to be 92
That's 60 mill to play around with to re-sign Dirk/Felton and get the three new guys
Dirk 5mill
Felton 6mill
Whiteside 21mill
Conley 16mill
Batum 12mill
It works in theory
Whiteside/Mejri/McGee/Hammons
Dirk/Powell/Evans
Batum/Anderson
Harris/Anderson
Conley/Felton/JJB

Batum will get close to double that. And Conley will make 26. It's not possible to get all three without dumping Devin and JJB and Dirk taking the exception. Even then it's difficult and we have zero pgs

These guys are all seeking max deals:
Batum: $26m
Conley: $26m
Whiteside: $22m

Batum is a backup plan if they strike out on either Conley or Hassan.
And no way they are able to sign all three. Batum is going to get the Max too.

Yep and all three will get it from someone. I don't even think it's worth getting upset over these contracts handed out because soon everyone will have one.

I'll even be happy if we bring Deron back. Sign Batum and Whiteside.

I really like Batum. He's going to be overpaid, but so is everyone. You can't really look at it like that.
I think he is way more obtainable than Conley. I actually think he would be a great fit for the other guys the Mavs might be able to get this summer in free agency as well. If you told me the Mavs could come out of this summer with Whiteside and Batum, I would be pretty happy.

He's defense could work itself out with having Wes and Whiteside help.

Statistically he holds his matchup to 1.8% lower 3pt shooting and 1.5% shooting overall... he was a little better from 3pt last season but overall he's more or less a "break even" defender, though I think it's fair to say he's a slight plus on that end. That's without considering his varied offensive game.
He's definitely worthy of a max contract with the cap how it is now and with who else is available this summer.

He's a better shooter than Parsons imo too. I've always likes Batum. Him and Wes together could spread the floor nicely while Dirk gathers his triple teams.

Last year Parsons was 10th in the NBA in 3pt%(41.4%). Batum was 94th(34.8%). I'll like some things Batum brings if he ends up here but I don't expect him to be a better shooter than Parsons. Parsons is better for their career's also.

Tim MacMahon @espn_macmahon 3m3 minutes ago
Source tells @MarcJSpearsESPN that Nic Batum will meet with Hornets and Mavs in Dallas and will talk to Knicks, Lakers, Wizards on phone.

I think Batum is a slight upgrade over Parsons... in a max contract he's slightly less risky because while he has a better track record of staying healthy, he doesn't have the upside I think Parsons has as a potential high-quality #2 scorer for the next 6 or 7 years. But I would take Batum over Parsons because I think he gives you better consistency and versatility on defense.

Batum and Whiteside would be a huge win if we could pull it off.
Don't think Conley leaves Memphis.

Parsons looks officially out from what Mcmahon said. Which has me pumped for the idea of Batum. Trading Devin and let's say Mcgee to free up space. Would it be enough to cover Conley, Batum and Whiteside?

According to Marc Stein, Batum is in Dallas because his agent's office is here. I know we have a meeting set up with him, but it's probably nothing to get too giddy about.

Okay but once he knows there could be a better team than his hornets one he can get giddy about it. That's if Whiteside agrees. He hasn't played with a center like him. And that could intrigue him. Not to mention being familiar with playing alongside Wes.

That's what I've been wondering about. I know with Parsons gone we can cover Whiteside and Conley, but I don't know about Batum on top of all that.

Under the Mavs system I bet he could surpass Parsons at 3pt shooting. The guy holds the ball like a point guard. I'll give him some slack on his stats this past season since playing in Charlotte was completely different tempo. Than playing in Portland since he started. I can see Carlisle using him as a point forward while having Anderson in there making it potential to be an active team.

Honestly we should now ask who's the better role player right now? Batum or Parsons. This itself is why Donnie never mentioned Parsons.

My guess is Wes told him a lot of great things about the Mavs and told him to take at least a look at a FA pitch.
Batum likes Charlotte and back in May there were headlines that he is going to re-sign for sure...

Familiarity is something Batum looked like he was lacking in Charlotte. Playing with Wes again and a Mavs system than can up tempo sound like some real help for Dirk.

I discount all regular season promises when it comes to free agency -- nobody is going to announce their intention to ditch their current team in the middle of the season... It's bad business.
Plus, a lot can change.

@tim_cato: Wes Matthews gets in town tomorrow morning, I heard. Could still be involved in Batum meeting, his former teammate.

@mavsmoneyball: Sounds like Woj doesn't think Charlotte offers Batum the max. It'll be interesting to see if Mavs do if (when) Conley falls through

@espn_macmahon: Nicolas Batum has agreed to a five-year, $120 million deal to re-sign with the Hornets, a league source confirmed. The Vertical first reported the agreement.
Batum's Friday meeting scheduled with the Mavericks is canceled.
