Best sell-off
TEXAS RANGERS: There's no telling how well the Rangers would have done if Gonzalez hadn't vetoed deals to the Expos and Dodgers, or if Rafael Palmeiro had said yes to trades to the Twins, Dodgers and Cubs. But those sagas aren't over yet, because both will sail through waivers. And at least, unlike most of their fellow sellers, the Rangers did get at least one guy with a chance to be a star (first baseman Adrian Gonzalez) when they moved Ugueth Urbina to Florida.
Gonzalez was once the No. 1 pick in the entire draft. Then Nick Johnson-esque wrist problems enabled Jason Stokes to pass him on Florida's prospect ladder. "But the ability is there," said one scouting director. "If this guy's healthy, he's going to be a great hitter and a real good player."
The other two prospects in that Urbina deal -- outfielder Will Smith and pitcher Ryan Snare -- also look like they'll play in the big leagues some day. And pitcher Ricardo Rodriguez, whom Texas got from the Indians for outfielder Ryan Ludwick, is another guy with a high ceiling, even though he's so high-maintenance, the Indians were ready to move him a year after trading for him.
