If he goes to Utah, ESPN look like idiots.
If he goes to Celtics, then Hayward looks awful. Probably planned to tell Utah before going public.
What a mess

Why on earth didn't the Jazz want to keep George Hill? Just seems nuts to me.

They offered him an extension last year (4y/70-80M IIRC) but either he thought he could get more money or he just didn't want to stay there. Lol at ending up going to Sacramento for a lot less though

If the Celtics get Hayward they will need to do.. "a series of transactions to create cap space for Gordon Hayward. The Celtics would have to pull the qualifying offer on Kelly Olynyk, renounce free agents Jonas Jerebko, James Young, Gerald Green and waive the contracts of Jordan Mickey and Demetrius Jackson (or trade). The Celtics would be left with $27.6M in room and likely need to move the contract of Terry Rozier or Marcus Smart. Trading Rozier would have the Celtics short $1M of a max salary a lot."
Bobby Marks, ESPN
Any interest in taking Marcus Smart off the Celtic's hands?

JaMychal Green's agent claims Memphis isn't serious about keeping him. Would love to see that guy on the Mavs. He stretches the floor and is a tough defender/ rebounder.

@wojespn: Free agent forward Omri Casspi has agreed to a one-year deal with Golden State, league sources tell ESPN.

He'll win a title next year, but his biggest accomplishment will still have been dating Bar Refaeli.

Damn they are deep, young, and talented.
Thomas - Rozier*
Bradley - Smart*
Hayward - Crowder*
Brown - Tatum
Horford - Zeller
*subject to necessary cap-clearing move for Hayward
Edit: Would love to see the Mavs get in on a potential move for Smart, Crowder, or Rozier.

Not to mention the two highly regarded euro- stashes (Zizic was picked with our 1st rounder from the the *barf* Rondo trade). Also I think they waived Zeller.

I would love to see Bradley here. Send them Seth and a heavily protected future pick.
My guess is they would want a lightly protected(top 8)1st for Smart? A rotation big and future protected pick for Crowder. I think they'll keep Bradley- they need his combination of shooting and defense. Rozier I have no idea, I like him though.

You're absolutely right about Zeller, that's my bad. (Also good call on Zizic). I think they keep Bradley too and I'm not sure I'd give up much for considering he's a UFA after this season.
Like you I think Smart is the odd man out. Moving Rozier alone isn't enough, and they'd be forced to move Zizic as well. Smart is a Dallas kid. I wonder if Salah plus some heavily protected picks is enough to get it done. If Celtics need anything it's a banging 5.

Actually it was Yabusele chosen with the pick from the Rondo trade. Zizic was from the Celtics own pick.
I'm a Celtics fan. It's a happy night. They're doing a lot right and have enough future assets to become contenders at some point.

RFA Otto Porter has reached agreement on a four-year, $106M max deal with Brooklyn Nets, league sources tell The Vertical.

They did but tactically it's smart.
They can't get anyone better.
They know Washington will almost surely match, so worst case they can tell their fans, "Hey, we tried."
They have to spend some salary anyway so if Washington doesn't match they get Otto Porter, but his big payday won't hurt them long term since the contract will be over by the time they have any chance of being good.

It is an overpay but he's a good all around player and reportedly high character hard worker with room to grow. Sounds like someone we signed last summer!

Personally I'd move Crowder. Nice contract and all. You have Hayward, Brown and Tatum locked up for years at 3/4. Horford at 4/5.
Keep the young defensive minded guards and let it shake itself out. You have time to figure who to pay what. IT, Rozier, Smart and Bradley is a damn nice rotation and keeps them in title contention for this season as well.

I was thinking that as well considering the logjam, but IMO they keep Crowder because of that reasonable long-term contract vs. having to match some crazy offer for Smart next offseason to keep him. Between Thomas, Rozier, Bradley Brown, and Tatum they have the 1 & 2 covered I think.
Random thought: For all the talk about Jazz having a great BT they really didn't think this offseason through. They let Hill walk only to trade a first rounder for Rubio. Then they paid a glue guy $13 million. Now their present and their future look pretty bleak, although Donovan Mitchell will be good I think.

OKC signs Patrick Patterson for 3/ $16.4 (3rd year is an option). He's a steal at that price IMO, far better than paying Ibaka $20+ million a year.

That's an excellent deal- assuming he's fully healthy. Gives them another shooter they desperately need. Very nice. Way better than Taj Gibson at 12m. Too bad we couldn't get in on that(Patterson). Maybe we really want to give Powell a shot at PF?

The Hill situation was weird. He turned down an extension that would've paid him more on a better and upcoming team. He and his agent misjudged the market. Btw that pick they traded for Rubio was the Thunder's pick and top 14 protected. But yeah, still, not best use of assets. I wonder if the reports of Hayward wanting Rubio are true. If so, that's a sucky thing to do. They maybe let Ingles walk and don't trade for Rubio if they know he's leaving?
I liked the deal for Donovan Mitchell as well. They'll need Hood to take another step and to trade Favors for something. Not sure he has much of a market. Maybe Exum makes a leap?

@wojespn: Boston has renounced restricted free agent Kelly Olynyk, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent, league sources tell ESPN.

@wojespn: Sources: The Clippers have reached agreement on a three-team deal to acquire free agent Danilo Gallinari on a three-year, $65M contract.
@wojespn: Sources: As Gallinari heads to LA, Hawks receive Jamal Crawford, Diamond Stone, LA's 2018 FRP via Houston, cash; Denver gets '19 2nd-rounder

True they do have some promising youth -- Exum, Gobert, Hood, Mitchell, Rubio, Burke, Favors -- but they will need to stay healthy (which they haven't been able to do) and have several of those guys take a significant step forward. I don't know where their scoring will come from, but they should be a formidable defensive squad.
I thought they had traded their own pick for Rubio, things aren't too bleak, but they will need to find that scorer in the draft because they will have a difficult time luring FAs.

Yup they'd be better served missing the playoffs and getting some lottery luck. Gobert may be a top 25 or so player in the league as soon as this season so they have that going for them. Will definitely struggle to score. Hard to say because there could be other moves coming but interesting to see how extreme the fall off is without Hayward. Feel bad for Jazz and their fans. Good coach and savvy GM so they'll be ok. May be too good to fully tank- sort like our situation- but the Killer West may just take care of it for them.

No. Maybe that's homer-ism. Noel, Barnes, DSJ is a potentially strong young core. Noel is no Gobert but he at least potentially could narrow the gap. Barnes >Hood. Hood should be better this season with higher usage but its not exactly a given. Haven't seen DSJ or Donovan Mitchell yet but DSJ profiles as the more likely star type. Exum I guess is the X-factor. Burks has been hurt. Rubio hasn't played with these guys yet either. Ingles is solid but he's what he is.

I agree. For me it boils down to having Barnes around. You need perimeter scorers to succeed in today's league. Barnes has shown he can put up 20 a game (not to mention his high character and work ethic).

It's too early to judge Jazz. Maybe Mavs too, although I think we may basically be done. Maybe some small changes at the bottom and a two-way contract for our 17th man.
Maybe I'll be surprised though and the Jazz will stand pat and Mavs make a big splash with the fallout of Hayward. More likely I think Jazz make a big move and Mavs sign Noel and grab some D-league of bargain development guys.

Thanks.
I feel bad for Utah though. This is the bleak side of free agency.
