2019 NBA Draft
Mavs probably drafting 10-20 and that pick going to ATL. We only keep our pick if we REALLY suck
Still, things are slow and 36 days to go until camp

Zion absolutely tearing it up for Duke tonight. 21 pts in a half, 29 overall
Barrett with 34
Both are fun to watch even though Duke are the Yankees of NCAA basketball

Too early to really speculate how things will fall for the draft. It's not a 16 game NFL season. It's a long 82 game grind, and we're not even 10 games into it.
Before the season started the Lakers were chosen as a lock for a playoff spot. It's not too surprising that we lost to them, but it was disappointing given the circumstances. Same goes with the Spurs. We even made it interesting against the Raptors. That's 3 of our 7 losses.
Last year the Suns swept us, but I still feel like we should have beaten them this year. We made it interesting until we couldn't do anything in the final 6 minutes. The Hawks, Jazz, and Knicks are the other teams to beat us. Sure, you'd think we could at least win 1 of those. At this point you could totally expect a few more wins, which would place us in a 3-way tie with the Thunder and Grizzlies with one of us sitting in 9th.
Do we want to flirt with the playoffs or keep some level of excitement and hold on to our #1 pick next year? Right now it's looking good for us, but if the ball drops like it did last year we could end up with the #6 pick and lose it to the Hawks.

I didn't realize that we're giving up the 1st round pick no matter what. As long as Atlanta has a 1st round pick coming from us I think we cannot tank. And no matter what they're getting it by 2023. That concerns me. We definitely gave up a lot for Dončić. And while it's unlikely, we don't want to be so bad by 2023 that we give them the top pick overall in the NBA draft. That's a minute possibility.

We definitely want it to convey before 2021 (or is it 2022 now?) when its likely that the draft will be open to high school seniors again. That year, pick 20 may have almost the value of a top 10 in another year.

We keep it if it's top-5 (after the lottery)... But we need to be trading our vets for whatever picks we can get at this point, no reason we can't wheel & deal our way to a high pick.

Then it's top 5 protected in 2020 though. Right?

Woooo boy those Duke freshies are gonna take the NBA by storm. Downright dominant. Keldon Johnson is going to be a stud, too.

Top 5 protected in 2019 and 2020.
Top 3 protected in 2021 and 2022.
Unprotected in 2023.

@ShamsCharania: From top NBA draft prospect Bol Bol's lawyer, Bryan J. Freedman: Bol underwent surgery Thursday to repair non-displaced fracture of navicular bone in left foot. Bol begins rehab next week, will use crutches/boot for 8-10 weeks and return to basketball activities in summer.
How far does he fall and how do we get that pick?

Sagaba Konate
Tankathon has him going second round. Not sure about his ability to defend in space or what if any offensive game he has but he seems like a good athlete with 7’ wingspan and he’s a tremendous shot blocker. Been out with injury this year.

Uh oh, apparently Zion has a knee injury, and his shoe also exploded.

Looked like a hyper-extended knee and is apparently a mild knee strain. I'm curious as to the extent and time missed, as I could fully be behind the player here if he deems it necessary to sit the rest of the season. We will find out more tomorrow. What we do know now is Nike will have to show some serious dough if they want Zion on a shoe deal. What a bad look.

I wouldn't play another college game if I was him. College pays you nothing in return for nearly blowing your knee out.

Financially, yes...but I appreciate his attitude about it. Not really the same as football...serious injury rates are a lot lower.

we are on the door step of the fifth pick? 37 percent chance to be in the top 4, 9 percent chance of the number one overall pick.

A lot can change with respect to 2nd round projections, especially with players declaring or not. But some mocks I've seen have included some really good players in that range: Tre Jones, Admiral Schofield, PJ Washington, Jontay Porter, Carsen Edwards, Eric Paschall, and Cameron Johnson. All guys I think could contribute with some upside.
In addition, injuries can affect the board. Like the unfortunate injury to Chuma Okeke that looked serious.

Hot take: Deandre Hunter will win ROY and have a better career than Zion.

tankathon - i was 5 for 10 - one #1, three #3's (a variety of culver, barrett, morant), and one #4 - culver.

Have to say I'm relatively relaxed going into tonight. Losing the pick was always worth it for Doncic and I additionally feel like drafting #9 - #13 this year might be worse than #15+ another year (given we make the playoffs). So it's really whatever and will just give us some clarity how to approach the off-season. Comfortable situation we haven't been in since forever.

I'm okay with losing the pick because you're going to lose one eventually anyways. I do prefer a top 4 pick especially if it's top 2. A no.1 pick and the mavericks are the biggest story in basketball maybe even sports in the U.S.

Couple of things...
He is the better, more consistent shooter, better defender, and arguably better handling the ball. Zion will either have to play the three where his quickness will be negated, or the four where his strength won’t be as imposing. Zion’s weight and explosiveness may also lead to leg/knee issues which would be killer for a guy so reliant on athleticism. Zion is without a doubt a rare athlete, but unless his skillset catches up and he loses weight I think he’ll disappoint in the league. Personally, if we got the number one pick I would try to trade down a spot or two and pick up assets.

Shitty part is thinking we shouldn’t have had to give up the pick since we had the better odds last year. Agreed worth it to get Luka, but damn.

thanks - haven't really seen Hunter much
Zion - mostly highlights but from the few games i've seen, he's not just a one trick pony. he's quite skilled already and has amazing body control and good BB IQ.
i don't think position definitions are so strict especially these days - if you're thinking he'd be negated in some way on offense, it'd be mostly because he needs to have a more consistent jumper. that may take time and may never be his biggest strength, but geez his quickness and strength together are imposing and i can't really think of many in the league that could stop him. and that's just in a bubble. put him with Luka and KP and you've got 3 players with unique skill sets, all with fantastic size.
it's all fantasy of course and Hunter is intriguing as a consolation prize but i don't think he's a better choice over Zion.
PS: he's 18. we talk about Luka's baby fat but Zion won't be 19 until July. give him a couple years of NBA strength/conditioning... he had what a 45" vertical at 280 pounds? that's just insane power/force.

I don't even care about integrating another rookie into an already young team. Zion, sure, the others, meh. Barrett and Morant might be good down the road, but I don't think they are NBA ready yet. Mavs need contributors NOW.

Why would we trade a high lottery pick to get rid of a 12.7mill expiring? Just let him expire next offseason and spend the money then. We already have like 30mill in cap to spend this offseason.
I mean this could be one of those drafts like 2013 where there basically isn't any talent, but you at least take the gamble. Using a high lottery pick to get 13 mill in cap one year early seems silly to me. Any star young enough to be a good partner to Luka and KP will fit in our cap space. It's also dumb to put effort into clearing assets for potential signings-- we've done it before and ended up with not much to show for it.

Not getting my hopes up, but will still watch. We can either super-fandom over a high pick, or start drilling into our high second round draft pick. I'm hoping the Mavs FO realizes they can find a useful piece there, a la Jalen Brunson.

I meant to trade the pick to a team who is pretty high on someone available and getting a good player in return

I keep seeing Jontay Porter in the range of our second rounder. Really like his potential fit on the Mavs, just doubt he falls that far...

PJ Washington would be a perfect fit next to KP.
Rebounds well. Defends okay. Fairly mobile. Perfect tweener to play next to KP and would be cheaper than overpaying for Montrezl Harrell, Julius Randle, Ed Davis type
