Default How would you rate these former players?

A lot of players have played for the Mavs during the past few years. How would you rate these players in terms of contribution to the Mavs’ success? Where did Cuban go wrong, where was he right on target?
The following ratings are based purely on my own subjective perception not on any numbers.

10=”Mavs’ success unthinkable without him”
0=”Didn’t make a difference whatsoever”

8
Nick Van Exel: Denver--Dallas--Golden State

7
Greg Buckner: --Dallas--Philadelphia
Adrian Griffin: Boston--Dallas--Houston
Gary Trent: Toronto--Dallas--Minnesota

6
Raja Bell: Philadelphia--Dallas--Utah
Juwan Howard: Washington--Dallas--Denver
Raef LaFrentz: Denver--Dallas--Boston
Calvin Booth: Washington--Dallas--Seattle
Walt Williams: Houston--Dallas--

5
Christian Laettner: Detroit--Dallas--Washington
Howard Eisley: Utah--Dallas--New York
Avery Johnson: Denver--Dallas--Golden State

4
Hubert Davis: Toronto--Dallas--Washington
Courtney Alexander: --Dallas--Washington
Johnny Newman: New Jersey--Dallas--

3
Evan Eschmeyer: New Jersey--Dallas--Golden State
Tariq Abdul-Wahad: Denver--Dallas--
Donnell Harvey: -- Dallas--Denver

2
Popeye Jones: Washington--Dallas--Golden State
Wang Zhizhi: Beijing--Dallas--Los Angeles

1
Dennis Rodman: Chicago--Dallas--

0
Mamadou N'diaye: Toronto--Dallas--Atlanta
Rigadeau: Bologna--Dallas--

Default RE:How would you rate these former players?

Nick was great while he was here and helped take this franchise to places they hadn't been in years. I don't know where we would be without him, especially considering that nearly half the guys on this team were acquired for him.

Raef LaFrentz would probably be next because he was also a key member on one of the best Mavs teams ever. I never thought he was used correctly in his time here, but he had moments where I really thought he could be one of the best centers in the league.

Juwan Howard has to be in the mix here as well. I thought Juwan was a real pro in Dallas (even though I didn't think he was utilized correctly either), and was the central figure in assembling this team. His contract made it possible for our Mavs to build up the talent around our Big Three.

I thought Avery was huge in Dallas. HIs leadership and fire were greatly needed, and are currently sorely missed. I hope he returns to Dallas very soon in some capacity.

Raja, Griff, Buck, Booth, Walt, Trent, Hubert, Popeye, and Newman were all key glue guys who tried to do the dirty work to help this team take the next step. Their contributions haven't been forgotten, in my mind. To me, they were simply precursors to Josh Howard type players. While we have made upgrades in this area, I thought those old guys really symbolized a lot of the things I liked about the Mavs.

Laettner and Eisley were the vets who played well in their short time here. For some reason, they remind of Mavs days past where every single player had an outrageous contract...(wait...nevermind )

Then there were the young kids who facilitated trades like Harvey, Thomas, Alexander, etc. I would even throw in the developmental guys like Wang, Rigadeau, and Ndiaye.

Abdul-Wahad and Esch were (and are) limited by injuries. They don't count.

I thought he was gone already

If he ever gets back into shape, it will be a tough task for him to find his niche on this team. I thought he had some good moments last year. He probably has to wait until someone else gets injured...

the lack of response to this thread clearly shows, no one really wants those players back and that is a good sign. that means we have a better team now than during any of the previous years.

the decisions of cuban and nellie aren't that bad after all

Well, he pretty much is a former basketball player.....

I must admit I'm in no position to rate anyone before the 2001/02 season as I didn't even watch the NBA before that. I'd rate Nick Van Exel at 8, Adrian Griffin a 6, Raef a 4, Walt Williams a 5, AJ a 5 (on leadership alone), Eschemeyer 0, Popeye a 0 as well.

1) nick van exel. A great clutch performer but at the same time he stalled the mavs offense by being the center of it when he was in the game.
2) Raja Bell- provided toughness and clutch baskets in the playoffs.
3) Raef- Overrated to begin with but had his moments.
4)Walt Williams

As long as TAW stays on the injured list insurance picks up 80% of his salary. The only serious way he costs Cuban money is through the luxury tax.

Who cares? It really only costs Cuban. TAW's contract means nothing to the Mavs otherwise, since we won't be under the cap for years to come. I don't understand the obsession on this site to dump his contract (just like Raef's). How does TAW's salary affect the Mavs strategically in any way.
