Warriors waive French G Antoine Rigaudeau

September 5, 2003

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) - Less than three weeks after acquiring Antoine Rigaudeau from the Dallas Mavericks, the Golden State Warriors Friday waived the French guard on Friday.

On August 18, the Warriors acquired Rigaudeau, fellow guards Nick Van Exel and Avery Johnson, forward Popeye Jones and center Evan Eschmeyer from the Mavericks in a nine-player trade for forwards Antawn Jamison, Danny Fortson and Chris Mills and guard Jiri Welsch.

The 31-year-old Rigaudeau, a nine-time All-Star in Europe, had a miserable rookie season with the Mavericks, averaging just 1.5 points per game in 11 contests.

Before joining the Mavs as a free agent in January, Rigaudeau spent parts of 16 seasons playing professionally in Europe for Cholet and Pau-Orthez in France and Virtus Bologna in Italy.

The 6-7 guard was a five-time MVP of the French Championship (1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1996).

I thought his original plan was to go to Europe anyway? Was his contract guaranteed?

It was my understanding that they wont waive avery because his contract comes off their books after this year. unless i am mistaken....

So there is no reason to have him sit on the bench. Waive him and let him get his money. That way he can come to the Mavs and be an assistant coach.

Why would they? He's a 3rd string pg for them behind NVE and Claxton. He could be insurance if one of them went down.

Or they could trade him for another expiring contract. Not sure if there is interest or not there.

Or they could be thinking along the lines we are. Use him as a coach while having the benefit of him on the bench as well.

I know that the Warriors aren't going to waive Avery but I was hoping.

You're not the only one MFFL. Didn't Cuban or Nelson mention the same thing?

I can't remember whether they ACTUALLY said something about it or we ASSUMED they said something. I don't think they said anything because that could be tampering.

Rig has always planned to play in Europe. Including him in the trade was done as a favor to the mavs. Even though Rig was not going to play, his salary was going to count for luxury tax purposes. So the Mavs, even though they weren't going to pay Rigadou's salary, they were on the hook for the tax on his salary. Including him in the trade, released the Mavs of that liability. GS, not being close to the luxury tax, doesn't have to worry about it.

As for AJ, Cuban and Donnie did speculate that they might do something with Avery IF he were waived. I don't think they ever said they thought he would be waived.

Seems to me no one but Nellie thought Rigs was any good.
