FWIW, with the reports coming out that James will want something near a max deal (max for him will be about $26M), it would be almost impossible for the Heat to add Melo unless he takes a substantial pay cut, and Bosh and Wade also take even bigger paycuts than anybody would have expected.
I'm curious what does everyone think wades worth without any discount? 8-10 mil a year for 3-4 years? He's just not worth anything near a max contract at this point.

Right now all the focus is on LeBron/Wade/Bosh with names like Melo/Lowry/Gasol/Gortat being thrown into the mix... Here's a list of non-hyped FAs that come to mind (Mavs players like Marion/Carter/Harris aside):

Eric Bledsoe (RFA)
Isaiah Thomas (RFA)
Shaun Livingston (UFA)
Rodney Stuckey (UFA)
Patty Mills (UFA)
DJ Augustin (UFA)

Lance Stephenson (UFA)
Avery Bradley (RFA)
Ray Allen (UFA)

Chandler Parsons (RFA)
Luol Deng (UFA)
Gordon Hayward (RFA)
Trevor Ariza (UFA)
Paul Pierce (UFA)
P.J. Tucker (RFA)

Josh McRoberts (UFA)
Boris Diaw (UFA)
Andray Blatche (UFA)
Kris Humphries (UFA)

Greg Monroe (RFA)
Emeka Okafor (UFA)
Channing Frye (UFA)
Chris Andersen (UFA)
Spencer Hawes (UFA)
Jermaine O'Neal (UFA)
Jordan Hill (UFA)

I think Cuban is pretty clearly talking about Melo in that article. He used the term 10+ veteran as a shorthand to reference guys that can make 20+ million. Carmelo isn't a 10 year vet but because of his salary last year his max is actually more than a traditional 10 year vet under this current CBA.

There are degrees of "less than max". The reality if that if Dirk takes 10Mil, it would somewhat difficult to clear enough room to offer a true max to Carmleo. But if he's willing to take 18-19Mil? Well you trade Wright for space and make it happen.

I think Melo is clearly the target, based on circumstances and his comments in that article.

Agree Melo (who's actually an 11-year vet if I'm not mis-counting) is the guy Mark's talking about in those comments. Still wonder about the ~other big fish~ part of the conversation that FJ mentioned.

If we're talking strictly UFAs, then Lowry, Stephenson, Deng and maybe Gasol are really the only guys I can think of that could qualify as "big fish" right now... We're certainly not going to splurge on Gortat after getting Chandler.

I just don't see how Gasol would come here if he wasn't starting. I think we could offer a nice salary, but he'd have to buy into 6th man.

I think Cuban's thinking is correct here. Carmelo has already made a ton of money. If he is serious about winning, and wants to be with a franchise that values coaching and culture, then a few extra million won't sway him. If it does then he isn't the right place for the current Mavs to spend.

Lowry could be a possibility. Mavs don't like Stephenson, and Deng and Gasol have been mentioned as Mavs targets, so I don't think he was talking about them. That's why I thought it could be Bledsoe. RFA but Phoenix doesn't want to pay him.

Maybe I'm wrong, but things could of changed on the Stephenson front. Unless I missed it we have heard very little outside of one interview on him which was even pre Heat vs Pacers series. His price could be right now.

I was thinking that, if he opted out (which I didn't think he would), he'd take something like $10M. Obviously he'll want four years if he can get it, but at his age and with his physical issues, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Heat negotiate him down to just 3.

If I remember correctly, BG said they don't think too highly of him. Pretty much ruled him out in my mind. I suppose a Monta situation could develop.

If Dallas is at all interested in Stephenson, they've been putting up one heck of a smokescreen. With Monta I had the impression that the reluctance was all about price. With Lance the buzz has been much less equivocal and much more negative.

Twitter has been awesome the last hour or so.

Kidd tried for power, got shot down, and now leaving nets possibly.

People are talking about Houston matching whatever offers Parsons gets. I just don't see how that is possible if they end up landing Carmelo. I get that financially they can make it work, but can they justify spending 12 million a year on a guy coming off the bench? Maybe they have hopes to bring him in at the 4 spot?

If they can sign Carmelo to a number low enough that they don't have to renounce Parsons (he has about a 2Mil hold), then once they've sign Carmelo their option will be to either give Parsons whatever he wants or not sign anyone else, because their cap space will be gone.

No thanks to Parsons...his defense is turrible, cant believe he comes away with that but everyone ripping players like Harden, Monta or Calderon.

Bad fit for the Mavs with Ellis and Dirk in the S5

The last images I have in my mind of his defense are Batum going off in back to back games against him and of course Lillards game winner. Probably not entirely fair but still it's there. Anyone have some advance stats for Parsons to help demystify?

So right now our worst case involves some combination of Love to T-Wolves for Parons, Terrence Jones and picks, Melo stays in NY, Ariza in Washington and Lowrey to Miami.

Nice article.

Didnt agree with the part about Parsons D. He cant guard his position, he sucks. The Blazers series was a perfect example. Batum (who isnt really a great scorer) pretty much destroyed him. And they also had Howard as center (if you want to make the comparison Chandler/Dwight - Harden/Ellis (well, Ellis is obvious not THAT bad).

Good is the part not to trust Arizas 40% from downtown this season. I also think Deng could raise his percentage to a level where you cant leave him wide open (35-365). So overall Deng is still the best fit for me.

I just disagree completely about your points on Parsons D. I understand the last month of this past season didn't put him in a great light defensively, but anyone who has watched his game these last few years would tell you its not an issue of talent. Sure he doesn't necessarily possess 1st Team All Nba athleticism, but he has shown he can play defense. Honestly, he's under some pretty poor coaching in Houston. My main issue here is people trying to make him out to be a Calderon or Ellis on the defensive end. This is inaccurate.

http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/maver...close-to-title

DALLAS -- Tyson Chandler, the finishing piece of a championship puzzle during his lone season in Dallas, doesn’t think the Mavericks are far from being legitimate contenders for another title.

Quote:
“If you can challenge the champs like that and be a play or two away from actually advancing, that means you're close,” Chandler said. “So I think this team is close.”
Chandler’s checklist of elements the Mavs were missing just so happened to be strengths of his game. He mentioned rim protection, finishing at the basket and offensive rebounding as areas that the Mavs needed to improve.

Of course, Chandler fully expects to fill those voids during his second stint in Dallas, much like he did during the Mavs’ 2011 championship march.

Quote:
“Yeah, absolutely,” Chandler said. “That was my role when I was there. Watching it in years past, I think it was lacking. My job is to be even better than I was the year that I had there. I’m looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to providing that and seeing what we can do.”

Added coach Rick Carlisle:
Quote:
“The guy is such an injection of enthusiasm and energy, and he’s such a good player. … It just sets up real well for our team. He complements Dirk extremely well. He’s a great runner, screener, rim protector. He just has that exuberant enthusiasm that’s infectious and it rubs off on everybody.”

Probably not a strong run, but yeah, there will probably be a few teams willing to sign him for the min. Anyone who goes above that will probably snag him.

Problem is for us is that we want to use all of our cap space prior to signing him, so we can go above the cap to sign him to the vet. min, which means we probably won't have an offer on the table until late-July/Early-August

I hope we get some decent young players with upside.
Like Lance Stephenson or Luol Deng.

29 is just a number in Deng's case... Dude has a LOT of mileage on those tires.

In Stotts’ system, he’d be a natural fit with his ability to stretch the defense with his long-range shooting ability. However, he would likely require the full midlevel being that he declined a player option of $6.8 million to become a free agent. Carter is “open” to the idea of coming to Portland and helping boost the bench up, we’re told by someone close to the veteran guard. Dallas is the clear frontrunner, but his mind is nowhere near made up. CSNNW.com - See more at: http://hoopshype.com/rumors.htm#sthash.HzjCoL1W.dpuf
