Sprewell coming to Spurs?

By Glenn Rogers
San Antonio Express-News

Web Posted : 07/21/2003 12:00 AM

There were more reports Sunday that the Spurs are trying to concoct a trade that would bring Knicks guard Latrell Sprewell to the Alamo City.
This scenario involved three teams. The Spurs would send Malik Rose to Philadelphia, Philadelphia would send Keith Van Horn to the Knicks and the Knicks would send Sprewell to the Spurs.

However, the Sixers have signed forward Kenny Thomas to a seven-year, $50 million deal, and sources familiar with the Spurs situation said there was little chance that Rose would be involved in any move with the Sixers.

In addition, the Sixers reportedly have said there is no such arrangement on the table.

That doesn't rule out the possibility of some trade, possibly involving another Spur, such as free agents Stephen Jackson and Speedy Claxton.

Spurs assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo, the former head coach of the Golden State Warriors, says he would have no problem with Sprewell joining the Spurs' roster.

Sprewell was suspended from the league for throttling Carlesimo when the two were at Golden State.

The Spurs, seemingly convinced they will lose Claxton, have put out feelers to 5-foot-5 point guard Earl Boykins.

There are reports that San Antonio contacted the player's agent to determine whether Boykins would be available and interested if the backup point guard slot opens up.

Boykins played backup to Golden State's Gilbert Arenas last season and averaged 8.8 points and 3.3 assists.

Boykins was not drafted when he came out of Eastern Michigan in 1998. He played in the CBA during sections of his first two seasons out of college while also putting in some floor time with Cleveland, New Jersey and Orlando.

He was with the Los Angeles Clippers for two seasons before joining the Warriors last year.

Claxton's final destination may be determined when Arenas' future home is determined.

Arenas, a restricted free agent, has offers from the Los Angeles Clippers, Washington Wizards and Warriors.

Well i can see why the Knicks and the Spurs would do it.

But the Sixers just signed a PF to a big contract, so it doesn't make since to trade your second leading scorer for another PF, that is limited by height.

And the trade involving SJ, is a downgrade from KVH.

Why would the Spurs do it? Without Rose they have NO frontcourt depth.

Default RE: spur, 76er, knick trade?

Surely the Spurs can get something alot more for Rose than Spreewell?

Sorry, I posted the below in the Stoopid Trades thread before I saw this thread. Rose is good, but not as good as spree. For as good as rose is, he is still a tweener and will never be able to guard the really good PF's. Spree is all SG and will be able to hang with the Kobes of the world (no puns please).

Saw this posted on a 76s board:

Dallas trades: Finley and Bradley
New York Trades: Spreewell and Kurt Thomas
Philly trades: Van Horn

Philly gets: Finley
New York gets: Van Horn Bradley
Dallas gets: Spreewell Kurt Thomas

Spree is an O downgrade from Fin, but a plus on the D.
Thomas brings a solid low post presence on O and improves the boards but is not the big momentum changer that bradley sometimes is especially against the weaker teams. ( I guess I am saying you may lose a few more regular season games, but are stronger down low). I don't know one way or the other. Not sure that Thomas can really bang with the West. Sprees contract is up in 2 years so you get some cap relief. I don't see Philly doing it unless iverson really is going to play point. I guess if I am dallas, I ask for a 1st round draft pick from one of the two parties and let them hash it out.
