Former Raptors point guard Chris Childs is reportedly set to return to his original NBA team. According to the New York Post, the 34-year-old free-agent has all but agreed to a two-year deal worth $3.5-million (all figures U.S.) with the New Jersey Nets.

Childs would provide the defending Eastern Conference champions with a veteran backup to all-star Jason Kidd.

Childs broke into the league as a free agent with the Nets in 1994, playing two years in New Jersey before signing with the New York Knicks as a free agent in 1996.

The Raptors acquired Childs and a first-round pick from the Knicks in a 2001 trade for fellow point guards Mark Jackson and Muggsy Bogues.

Although Childs has yet to sign the deal, Nets president Rod Thorn told the Post the contract is all but done.

"I don't anticipate any problems with it that would hold it up or stop the deal,"' Thorn said.

Childs battled through injuries to average 4.1 points and 5.1 assists with the Raptors last season as a backup to Alvin Williams.

Moved into the starting rotation in four of five playoff games against Detroit, the 6-foot-3 guard averaged 11.8 points and 7.4 assists.
