WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Washington Wizards signed point guard Chris Whitney on Monday, welcoming back the team's career leader in 3-pointers and free throw percentage.
He will be a possible backup to Gibert Arenas, who was signed as a free agent last month.
Whitney has played eight of his 10 seasons with the Wizards. Washington traded him to Denver a year ago, and he was later dealt to Orlando in midseason and played for the Magic in the playoffs.
Whitney has made a franchise-high 481 3-pointers with the Wizards. His .878 free throw percentage is tops among players with at least 700 attempts.
Although a backup for most of his career, Whitney started 81 games for the Wizards in the 2001-02 season, averaging a career-high 10.2 points while ranking fourth in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio.
