Not looking good for Powell after 2 games


The effects have been particularly profound on Luka Doncic. According to NBA.com/Stats, Doncic is shooting just 7-of-22 (31.8%) when Powell is on the floor this season. His numbers skyrocket up when Powell leaves the court, shooting 13-of-23 (56.5%). He also sees a significant jump in his scoring around the basket.

The most painfully obvious issue is his liability on defense. First of all, Powell is just a tiny bit undersized for a traditional NBA center at 6-foot-10. This makes matchups like Anthony Davis and Deandre Ayton, his first two assignments of the season, really difficult to contain.

Powell also doesn’t offer you very much rim protection — Dallas the lowest number of blocks among teams that have played two games. The lack of a shot-blocking threat often forces Powell to sag off his man and stay in front of the point of attack. This creates a problem when you’re defending a shooter and is a weakness that seems likely to plague the Mavericks until Porzingis’s return.

Check out photo of Gasol 15 feet away from Powell (camped under basket), not guarding Powell at all. That says it all. And he kills spacing and the offense. Thats how all the bigs will guard Powell. He is no threat to drive or shoot. and is a very poor rebounder and defender. Only reason to play him is to give NY Knicks a lottery pick. Is RC working for the Knicks?
RC - if he wants to win, needs to try a starting lineup of Luka, JRich, DFS, JJ, and WCS. Then he can sub in the offensive power off the bench, e.g., THJ, Burke, Kleber (and Green should get some time, as he has looked good). Powell should play sparingly, just like Boban.

THJ needs to step up at as well, but Powell's shortcomings really hurt the team in areas we need.

Like, if Powell would just turn himself into a hard nose, defensive energy big, then he could etch out a role here. But he's just soft...no other way to put it.

With the lack of rebounding and rim protection this really makes you question why they didn't even attempt to go after Howard or Whiteside.

But it then again WCS can't even get 12-16 MPG so i guess it wouldn't have even mattered.
