Default Rookie Nick Collison will not play for Seattle this year

ESPN.com news services
Saturday, October 4, 2003

Seattle SuperSonics: Seattle rookie Nick Collison needs surgery on both shoulders and will miss the season.

"It's very disappointing. I've wanted to play in this league since I was 8 or 9, and now I'll be out for a year," the power forward said Saturday.

Collison was the 12th overall draft pick this year after leading Kansas to the NCAA championship game.

He averaged 18.5 points and 10 rebounds as a senior.

The 6-foot-9 Collison dislocated his left shoulder early this week, and later tests showed similar weakness in his right shoulder.

Wow, what a shocker to the Sonics. That will hurt them badly, I was expecting Collison to put up some good numbers too.

alot of people were. Hinrich and Collison were supposed to explode. Seattle sure coulda used him...

kinda makes you wish they had traded draft rights with us so we coulda picked up Luke Ridnour,Kendrick Perkins, Brian Cook or Zarko Cabarkapa....well there were a lot of nice options open after Collison....totally hypothetical. Can you tell I cant wait for the game tomorrow?

Me either. I can't remember looking forward to listening to a game on radio.

I hate to hear that. I really don't like Kansas, but Collison has game. After that 20-20 last year to beat my Longhorns last year, he has my respect.

I still think Chicago will regret taking Hinrich over TJ ford. I'll admit that I'm biased, but I think the kid is special. He makes those around him better. That pharse gets used a lot, but I think it's a rare quality.

What a tough decision for him to make. I know he sat on this for a bit and wanted to avoid the surgery.

As frustrating as this must be for him, at least he can take care of the problem now. Better to be healthy next year than play injured this year.

And as far as Seattle is concerned, they would have trouble making that eighth playoff spot even with a healthy Collison. Their playoff chances probably aren't that much greater than their chances of winning the lottery, assuming the other top 8 or 9 teams don't collapse. Might as well let him get healthy and hope to add another high pick.

I guess I'm the only one that doesn't think this is bad. I don't think it is good, but it isn't that bad.

I didn't hear him doing much in the summer leagues, and he made stupid mistakes in the nationals, often getting booed. As for Hinrich, he was reported to be doing the worst(1st round) besides Outlaw.

He might hate it, but he has his whole NBA career ahead of him. Better to play that healthy.

Excellent point. This is unfortunate, but his long term prognosis is fairly good.

Ouch. I think Ridnour is out for them as well. Tough loss for the Sonics.
