Default Taylor out Indefinitely

ESPN.com news services

Following an offseason in which he worked himself into the best shape of his career for the purpose of avoiding injuries, forward Maurice Taylor dislocated his left shoulder Saturday on the second day of training camp.

Taylor does not have any fractures but will be out indefinitely. He underwent additional tests Saturday, which were inconclusive, had an MRI and was scheduled to have more tests Sunday.

If damage is found in cartilage or muscles, the 26-year-old Taylor likely will miss several weeks -- if surgery is required, much longer.

"We feel very, very badly for Mo, because he put in a lot of work in the offseason to get himself down," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy was quoted as saying inSunday's Houston Chronicle.

"You feel bad for the guy," Van Gundy said. "It was a freak, buzzard's luck thing. We were just jogging through stuff, and [Taylor and 260-pound center Peter Cornell] just bumped shoulders."

Taylor now has been hurt before each of the three seasons since he signed a six-year, $48 million contract with the Rockets. The power forward had said the previous injuries were enough to inspire the most serious conditioning effort of his career this year.

"I didn't want to start getting injury prone," Taylor was quoted as saying last week. "I didn't want to have nagging injuries the rest of my career. I didn't want to go downhill because of injuries."

Taylor tore his right Achilles' tendon in September 2001, forcing him to miss the entire 2001-2002 season. Last season, he missed most of training camp after developing Achilles' and ankle problems.

He's not that good anyway. I doubt they'll miss him much.

He can be helpful at times. He's like Houston's poor man's version of Najera.

They need all the frontcourt they can get.

He doesn't play nearly as hard a Najera. If he did, he'd be a lot better than he is. He has some talent, but I always felt like he relied too much on his athleticism. Since the ACL injury, he can't do that anymore.

Edit: achilles injury
