Default Who will the Mavs Draft?

Here's who they're bringing in to workout so far (via Draft Express)

Brian Hopkins PG
James White SG/SF
Kevin Pittsnogle PF
Bobby Jones SG/SF
Steve Novak SF/PF
Leon Powe PF
Will Blalock PG

I'm a big Steve Novak fan, I'd think he'd be a great fit for this team

Thoughts?

I haven't looked at them all but I do like the idea of having a tall 3pt shooter on the team so that we can go small in spurts and have someone take up some of dirks offense.

In other words a kvh with an attitude.

Best Player Available, regardless of position.

Picking that low in a weak draft, it will be real hit and miss if there is even anyone there who will make a real contribution in the NBA. Most of the players in that vicinity will end up sucking ass. I say if yhe Mavs see anyone they think is an NBA player, they take him, and ignore the position he plays or his style of game. Only if there are several excellent choices would I worry about how he fits.

James White.

Athletic, a Great Defender, Offense can come later jus look at Josh Howard. And he will be the first Maverick to win the Dunk Contest. Anyone watch the College Dunk Contest????

Hopkins is a bum and on a bum ankle. Never lived up to 1/3 his potential.

Norm on the ticket said they covet teh Senagalese Belgiom guy sene or whatever. He also mentioned PJ Tucjer.

Tony Dumas???????

He was a great, great leaper with allegedly super athletic skills. Wasn't a very good player for the Mavs though.

PE, I agree with your sentiment on drafting the best player available regardless of style. However, I think drafting that low and in a weak draft it might be easier to look for a defensive stopper at one of the swing spots. A point would be great as well though most of the really good ones in the league get snapped up quick. I think they would be better off trying to trade for a quality point or picking one up in free agency.

The guys I am interested in though I certainly can't say one way or another:
Guillermo Diaz
James White
Carney
Lowery
PJ Tucker

I really don't want the Mavs to pick a 3 point specialist or even a 3 point shooter. I hate those guys. I want explosive players who attack the basket and handle the ball well. I feel that guys who have great athleticism and decent scoring ability from 18 and in can always expand their game through hard work to include that 3 pointer. Usually guys that are known as 'shooters' often feel that they don't need the other parts of their games so they never become good defensive players.

Agreed. We're deep enough that we can't augment any specific position with a low-draft-type player.

Ronnie Brewer-- we'd have to trade up probably, but the guy could start as early as this next year. He's just mature and NBA ready. He has the ballhandling he'd need with our lack of Nash, and he has a lot of focus for defense.

Rajon Rondo-- Still probably a year away from being more than the second point guard, he's still promising. Great defensive and rebounding numbers and he plays with something called heart.

Darius Washington-- A good 1st round pick, a great pick if we can find him in the 2nd round. He could be a contributor.

Saer Sene, Tyrus Thomas, Pittsnoggle, O'Bryant...all overrated or wouldnt work for us.

Brewer is gone in top 15, likely top 10. Lowry stock seems to be rising late and I think he is top 20. Rajon and Darius might be there when mavs Pick, though some drafts have Rondo is the middle of first.

Pittsogle....WAY overated. Too slow, only shoots threes. Tyrus is also overatted, but he'll still be a good NBA player....15ppg, 10 rbg, 2 blocks in his prime.

Saer is not overated. I really like his game, obviously he is raw offensively, but his blocking ability, rebounding, and hustle is very very good for a guy who picked up a basketball for the first time 2 years ago and will only get even better......a 7'8 wingspan obviously helps though =)....

Using a top 5-10 draft pick on a guy like M'Benga who barely knows how to play and barely got playing time in a weaker league is kinda dumb. I'll stick with M'Benga myself and let the Knicks or Sixers pick up Saen.

Brewer is going before 28th, but we have the parts to steal a pick high enough to pick him up and I don't think we'd regret it. He's one of only a couple of guys that could start for us next year.

As I understand it, we were interested in Damir Markota two years ago when he entered the draft under the name Damir Omerhodzic, so considering the fact that he has played very well for Euroleague power Cibona this year, and he has reportedly matured (rumors of party animal exploits, combined with poor workouts helped to sink his draft stock in '04), I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Donnie select the athletic, 6-11 Croatian sharp-shooter this Wednesday...

Still hope we manage to get Pittsnogle in the second round. I like the idea of another seven footer that can stretch the defense by raining down threes. No reason he can't take Van Horn's place--he surely can't be any worse than KVH was this year.

What are the odds the Mavs can move up to a top 5 pick and grab Stephen Curry as our PG of the future? If we hold on to Stack all year, then offer up Stack's almost expiring contract, maybe someone like Diop, and perhaps a swap with our 1st rounder (which, at present, would be #14), would another team bite?

GSW had to activate Monta Ellis today, so they cut 2nd round draft pick Richard Hendrix 6-9 255 pound banger playing in the D-League so far. Could be worth giving him a look as the 3rd center.

Patrick Mills
He plays for St Mary's and is a quick point guard.
He also played very well for Australia in the Olympics and also did well against USA.
He's got a lot of potential aswell and Dallas need a good PG. Seeing Kidd is gonna be gone soon.

Given the borderline-absurd efforts teams are currently making to clear 2010 cap room, the guaranteed money given to top 10 picks, and the supposed weakness of this year's draft...what are the odds the Mavs might be able to buy their way up in this year's draft? It's supposedly well stocked with PGs--even at 14, where the Mavs project to end up, they should be able to draft a decent point--but I wonder if a team trying to clear cap room in 2010 would sell off a pick around 4-5-6 for straight cash, and/or us taking back a bad contract in exchange for Stack or something? I think it's time for the FO to start thinking creatively this way--every team is gunning for three players in 2010, let's take advantage of the potential for irrational behavior out there to pick up a few quality veterans who may be a bit overpaid, and score a few extra first round picks while we're at it.

I'm not sure there is a precedent for a team selling such a high pick for cash. maybe packaged with our #14 and future considerations. We should absolutely be all about picking up some overpaid vets though.

Agreed. Closest thing that comes to mind is the Suns trading away the rights to #7 Luol Deng for a future pick. Can't remember what that future pick became, I am guessing they sold that off too, or included it with Thomas or something.

I wonder if the Mavs could pull off something like that--absorb a bad contract on a decent player in exchange for an expiring and a pair of #1s. I think it's possible, on paper--but I worry that the Mavs have set such a precedent for being fleeced the past few years that they will have a hard time making such a deal happen.

Didn't the suns also sell off what became Rajon Rondo? Yikes. Personally I hope we package our 14th or so pick w/Kidd or J-ho and get back a "star"(unless there is someone we think is an absolute can't miss at 14). But buying picks would be nice too. This draft is pretty weak. Last year was the year to buy. But then our FO is like a year behind on everything anyway. I've totally sold myself(LOL)on the idea that we should trade all assets and try and win in the next 2-3 yrs. Kidd, J-Ho, Stack, 1st rd. pick, mid-level, bi-annual =4 or 5 good players to go w/ Damp, Dirk, Jet. Is that enough? Depends on who those 4-5 players are.

And being fleeced is such a lame excuse, IMO, when it comes to buying a pick, the way Cuban used to throw $ around. I think 2mil or whatever they were asking is not outrageous. So they asked an extra million because it's Dallas-who cares-if you get what you want out of it. Donnie made it sound like it offended their sensibilities or something. You're buying a pick because you screwed up and traded 2 away- it should cost you something. Standing pat last summer was a mistake as we're seeing now.

I like the way you're thinking here - it would be nice to see the Mavs come up on the winning end of a desperate NBA trade...
