I want to ask RC what Powell is good at?
Expecting something like "well he's been here 7 years"

He's a hard worker at things that don't involve basketball.
This is sadly one of his better games too...

WCS and the Mavs just stood around on that one and let that dude sail right in for the soaring slam dunk put back. That is the kind of lapse that will cause you to lose tight games.

The last two games we've seen Vuc and Jokic utilize the jump hook with success.
That's old school NBA post moves
Seems like more BIG's today should work on that shot especially KP

Man, Vuc seems to have a homing beacon on his shot. It doesn't seem to matter how ugly he chunks it, it just goes right in.

Nice! Luka drives and gets to the line when we need it to keep scoring.

Kleber and WCS much than Powell at contesting shots
Iwundo might have just earned himself some extra minutes based on defense and hustle.
This guy might be an underrated pickup come the playoffs when you need multiple defensive wings

Nice to see Burke break out, but sad that Green didn't do anything.

It bugs me because Bey was such a reward at 18. Green just looks completely lost on offense.

The whining about Powell is a bit much. He played less than wcs and maxi. Rick has already said that wcs asks out of games due to fatigue. The Mavs did not lose any ground because of the minutes Powell played.

Winning without J-Rich. Impressive. Winning without J-Rich and KP? Even more impressive! No Brunson or DFS as well? Dang!
Then Boban for under 2 minutes and 3 DNPs? I thought we'd need EVERYONE! Not sure that I love Iwundu's 32.5 scoreless minutes on 0 for 2 shooting. Yes, he had 6 rebounds and 2 steals. I want more though. Clearly, he didn't need to score while on the floor as he had the 3rd highest +/-. He was lucky to be on the floor with Trey Burke, who was totally on fire.

He didn't score a single bucket but make no mistake about it dude impacted the game with his hustle and always seemed to be around the ball.
He was like that in the playoffs for Orlando last year. He would never really score but he just did so many things defensively for them.
Phoenix has a guy just like in J.Carter off their bench. He just hounds people all game

Do you think Carlisle can just wave a magic wand and say "Powell is HEALED!"
Powell needs minutes to get back into playing form
And we are short a big man on the court. When KP comes back then I expect that Powell will get 12-15 minutes a night. If Powell still sucks towards the end of the season then I will care about it more
But in Carlisle's mind, Powell is a valuable role player. And since Carlisle has won a championship then I tend to think he knows something about basketball

Carlisle can make mistakes not to mention Powell was mostly here during down years went to movies with Cuban now they feel some kind of loyalty to him for being here so long, tell me what else he was good at. You don't have to be a total shill.
Instead of just saying Carlisle is always right I'm wrong back it up with your own opinion of why Powell is a great player. I'll wait.
Can't shoot 3s can't play defense can't rebound not even a good free throw shooter. He's not good at basketball.

What the Mavericks said about the hot shooting of Tim Hardaway Jr. and Trey Burke
The former teammates at Michigan fueled the offense.
By Doyle Rader@TheKobeBeef Jan 10, 2021, 9:00am CST
https://www.mavsmoneyball.com/2021/1...ey-burke-magic
It might be cold outside, but it was certainly hot inside the confines of the American Airlines Center last night. Both Tim Hardaway Jr. and Trey Burke absolutely caught fire in the Dallas Mavericks’ 112-98 win over the Orlando Magic. The former Michigan Wolverines backcourt combined to shoot 15-21 from behind the 3-point line, giving Dallas the boost it needed to come away with a victory.
Hardaway finished the game with 36 points, a season-high, fueled by a 16-point outburst in the third quarter that helped the Mavericks avoid a letdown as the Magic made a push. Burke started the game feeling it. He had 16 points at halftime on 4-4 shooting from downtown. He finished with 29 points, making seven of his eight 3-point attempts.
Here’s how they and the team reacted to their performances:
Rick Carlisle
“[Trey Burke] a weapon. He’s a dangerous scorer. One reason that I think he plays well for us is that he knows we have great confidence in him. He’s a guy that can just get white-hot out there. We had some luck with the mid-pick-and-roll with him. He did a lot of other good things off of movement. He’s a shot-maker. If you’re going to lose a guy like Seth Curry in a trade, being able to pick up a guy like Trey Burke is really important. Again, I can’t stress enough how important Burke was. And Hardaway, too, had a spectacular game; he had the shot-making from the outside but he also had some good rim attacks and some good finishes.”
Luka Doncic
“It was great. They were hot players the whole game. It was like make a pass; you know you’re going to get an assist — it was easy. They both have an amazing game and they’re a big part of our wins every game.”
Tim Hardaway Jr.
“Yeah, we turned back a little bit. That’s how normally it used to be back in those days. I am happy for him. TB [Trey Burke] came in there and kept a level head. We needed him being three guys short. He stepped in and was always next man up mentality.”
Trey Burke
“As far as my contribution, I just let the game come to me. Obviously, I had been out for 48 hours and you know that initially being out just one day you can feel that in your wind out there. I was really focused a lot on how I felt wind wise. The ball found me right when I got in and it was a wide-open shot so I just locked in, focused on my breathing, hit the shot and I think once I hit that first one, I just relaxed.
“I think teammates did a great job feeding hot hands tonight. Not just me, but Tim [Hardaway Jr.] had a great game. He had the best game tonight. We are just going to have to keep building off of games like this.”

I am far from a shill, but ok
I'm not saying that Powell was EVER a great player - you are moving the goalposts
I think he was an effective big before the injury and might be again. He needs game minutes and time. I personally doubt that he'll ever come back to his old self but he might invent a new self that can be an effective big in the NBA
But you are discounting that Powell is smart and willing to run through a wall for the coach. Those are traits that every coach loves and coaches find a way to get those players gametime
And I'm not the only person who appreciates Powell, I'm just the guy here who is willing to debate it

I think I would agree that before the injury, he was a solid contributor.
1) He was in all five of our best units
2) He was ranked first in the NBA in OFFRTG and eFG%
3) His ability to contribute to a team defense made him decent. His individual defense wasn't great, but he was always in the right spot.
I guess we have to see if he's really just limited because of injury or working his way back into shape.

Reasonable take MFFL. My problem was less with Powell and more with Carlisle insisting he started while WCS barely broke the rotation.
Ultimately If Powell isn’t able to rim-run the way he used to, I don’t think he brings enough as a perimeter scorer or defender/ rebounder to warrant more than 10 MPG. However, as upset as I was with his play, I understand RC giving him a chance to get his legs under him especially given Powell’s intangible qualities as a leader and great teammate.

False. He started for six games. WCS played over 10 minutes in each of those other than the first game of the season, and a game that he was in foul trouble.

Maxi out 10-14 days for protocol. How on earth is Silver letting this continue?

This all seemed to have started when the players began wearing the tracing devices. I’m not sure how they determine what constitutes exposure, but they must be operating on a more sophisticated definition than myself, because all of the Mavericks and Nuggets, and now Magic have been exposed IMO. There must be a window and zone of infectiousness that is more precise, and made possible by the tracking devices.

Although the 10-14 days looks like he actually tested positive, rather than just came into contact. I think the players who are just considered exposed only miss a week.

So he went from 11 mpg (IMO barely cracking the rotation) to more than double that over the past three games. My point stands.
