Default From the latest Zach Lowe article

From the latest Zach Lowe article (sorry clips not available)

8. Can the new-look Mavs find the right amount of variety?

This legitimately startled me:

That can't be the Dallas Mavericks, right? This is what would happen if you told the Mavericks to do an impression of the Golden State Warriors: a hard push from Luka Doncic; an extra ball handler in Spencer Dinwiddie to move things along; a respected gunner (Davis Bertans) to enter the ball and pivot into a split action with Doncic; and finally a step-up screen for Doncic leading into a Maxi Kleber pick-and-pop triple.

The Mavs are probably the league's worst and most disinterested transition team -- the slowest to get up shots after both defensive rebounds and turnovers, per Inpredictable. Dallas has pushed up the standings -- it's 18-6 since Jan. 1 -- behind smart, suffocating defense. The Mavs rank 16th in offensive efficiency overall, and a tick above league average during that 18-6 stretch -- even as Doncic found his A-game.

Imagine how dynamic they could be if they sprinkled in more of this around their Doncic-centric spread pick-and-roll attack? Deviations from that usually took the form of obligatory, low-efficiency post-ups for Kristaps Porzingis. That is a happy trickle-down effect of flipping Porzingis to Washington, which was really about dumping Porzingis: replacing him with two players who added at least the possibility of a healthier sort of variety.

You don't want to over-democratize, and shift too much offense away from Doncic. But more transition play is a no-brainer, and the constant presence of at least one of Jalen Brunson and Dinwiddie around Doncic (and sometimes both) will unlock some around-the-horn sequences Doncic can both start and finish.

Hell, even just getting Doncic a few open catch-and-shoot looks would be a nice reprieve for him:

Dallas has been my sleeper "if all goes well" Finals threat all season. Doncic is that good in the playoffs. My first reaction to the Porzingis deal was that the Mavs had slightly lowered their ceiling now to wriggle more flexibility later -- that they would miss Porzingis' rim protection and occasional bursts of shooting.

What if that turns out wrong?

How much longer before the NBA widens the GD court? Too many needless out of bounds calls because of that tiny space.

From a Smoking Cuban article: "The 23-year-old excels as a lob target on the offensive end of the floor and has the size and athleticism to defend multiple positions. Wright’s versatility is one of the many reasons that the Mavs signed him to a two-way deal this late in the season."

Sounds like the right kind of pick-up. Can't expect much from the 17th guy, but he's put up some numbers this year in the G league.

One of these guys has to hit. I’m glad the Mavs are at least taking shots.

Agreed. Glad they are bringing guys in to see what they can bring to the team. Hopefully one of these guys can stick around and play a role going forward.

nice article - thanks for sharing.

interesting how things work in the NBA - as a player Dudley was a JAG. But nice to hear how he's got credibility with the players and that he's putting in work to help everyone out.

I like Parsons. I think my issues with him were not really him but circumstances.

1) Cuban was acting reckless by giving him GM power, which is on Cuban and not on Parsons
2) He was just injured. That's not his fault.

1st in offense but slipped a bit on defense. If they can be in top 10 in both, then there is a deeper playoff chance.

Only the Celtics and Suns have had a better net? Can't face Celtics until the finals. No real chance to face the Suns before the second round. I'd say that that is good news. Yeah, the defense dropped, but that is still excellent news.

Don't know why anyone would want to face Nuggets/Jazz/Grizz in the playoffs. Really hoping we can keep 5 and the Warriors drop to 4. I think Warriors are my #1 hope for a first round matchup followed by Grizz because of matchups, but Nuggets/Jazz/Grizz are the real deal.

Also anyone looking to get Jonas/Ingraham for cheap on a fire sale are in for a rude awakening. Pelicans are good. The only guy that can be had for cheap from them is probably Zion. They're good and are going to keep the core of CJ/Jonas/Ingraham.

Sucks that the Mavs went 8-2 over last 10 games and haven’t made up any ground because everyone else is red hot too

If I am the Pels GM, I look for the biggest package Zion can attract. The dude doesn't seem bought in to the idea of playing in the NBA long term. The solution is right before his and his personal team to make changes and value the body more. His play style simply can't warrant being lazy in that facet of the game, not to mention he already has lower extremity injuries including set backs. Let the next sucker overpay for him and like you said, roll with that core.

Teams aren't afraid to attack the basket since the mavs have 0 rim protection.

But I'm hoping when healthy Chriss can at least help out with his agility and quickness on the defensive end of the floor.

Recapturing some defense tenacity
The Mavericks have given up over 100 points in six straight contests. Yes, they’ve won five of those six games, but the defensive margins have shifted downward a bit lately. The Kings are not a great basketball team but they certain can score the basketball quickly. Dallas needs to control the pace on both ends and if they do so, they can likely win this game rather easily.

not much that stood out in terms of his highlights for this game...
used as a screener on pick and rolls a lot
kinda stood around in the dunker's box area and got several of those

would be nice to throw him out there some time and see what he's got

yeah - G league in general doesn't seem to be a very high quality of play. College ball looks better coached and better organized even if the individual talent isn't always as high. hard to tell much about how someone will perform in the NBA

Armchair psych and all, but I swear JET never got over Dirk ripping him a new one that playoff game against the Suns when he failed to foul Nash and gave up the 3 to lose the game.

I remember watching that the first time and cringing as he said that with the 2011 championship jacket on in the video of him playing pop a shot.

Jazz lost last night. They have the tiebreaker because they are leading their division but we’re now tied for 4th and a HCA spot for the first time since 2011. If we can somehow make up a half game more we can end up 4th

Jazz 6th hardest schedule (Mavs are tied but don’t have tiebreaker)
Nuggets 13th hardest schedule (nuggets are 1.5 behind us)
Mavs 24th hardest schedule

Probably too late to catch the Warriors and Grizz who are 4.5 ahead
Probably too late for the Wolves to catch us too who we have 3 games on

4-6 is what we’re fighting for
