Trae Young: I’ve been preparing most of my life to join the NBA, and that time has come for me now: After an unforgettable year at the University of Oklahoma, I will enter the June NBA draft and fully immerse myself in the pursuit of a pro basketball career. – via ESPN

5, 3, 6, 5, 3

And they still have Bagley at 5 and JJJ at 3. I really find it so hard to believe that Bagley falls to 5.

Kid shot above 40% just 7 out of 20 times in 2018. Some team will convince themselves he'll do better around better talent. He has a nice shot and decent handle, but IMO he's closer to DJ Augustin than Steph. Hope someone before us takes him.

Just weird that they have Zaire Smith at 37. Tankathon has him #11

Tankathon is as hell bent as the FO on getting our hopes up and crushing them. They have us getting Bagley at both 5 AND 6. Really?

I'm going to stick with 6. That what I've been saying all along, I think? I think we'll take Bamba if he's there and if not Bridges. Though its not implausible for them to go 4&5 if MPJ drops because of back issues. JJJ may drop too after underwhelming.

Robert Williams is a pretty active big. I'm just not confident he can man the center position in the NBA. He'll have to be able to since he doesn't have an outside shot. Still think he is a lotto pick but early teens.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was a steady riser for me. He didn't have a great game last night but I still think he is an intriguing prospect.

We have some good ones on tap for tonight. If you're not a college basketball fan, but are interested in catching some of the draft prospects that will likely options for the Mavs, good time to catch them.

Kansas - 2nd round types, but Lagerald Vick, Devonte' Graham, Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, Malik Newman, Udoka Azubuike. I wonder why Azubuike isn't hitting mock draft radars, even 2nd round?

West Virginia - Jevon Carter (2nd)

Villanova - Mikal Bridges (top 1st) and Jalen Brunson (top 2nd)

Duke - Marvin Bagley III (top 1st), Wendell Carter Jr. (top 1st), Trevon Duval and Gary Trent Jr. (mid to late 1st), Grayson Allen (2nd)

Texas Tech - Zhaire Smith (climbing into lotto), Keenan Evans (would LOVE him in the 2nd)

Purdue - Vince Edwards (2nd)

Any chance if the cards fall just right that we trade down with either suns or more likely bulls to grab another pick? I’m thinking if we miss the top few that we slide back and take Mikal while picking up another guy in the teens. Jjj is iffy for me as is mpj so if we don’t get Ayton Doncic Bagley I’d think about it.

Nah you never know how the draft works out behind you and if your guy is really still there after trading down.

Its much different in the 5-8 range than sometimes in the Top-3. Last year the Celtics knew that the Sixers would take Fultz and that the Lakers were locked in on Ball. So they knew they get their guy Tatum still at #3

Knicks win against the Wiz. With 27 wins i doubt they outtank us. Thats nice, it looked 2-3 weeks ago like they were going to outtank us.

The biggest question for the Mavs is whether they pick MPJ or not. I'm less concerned about choosing between JJJ, Bagley, or Bamba and more nervous about taking a big risk on Porter.

They've gotta weigh the option, though. He's a big risk, but could easily be the best player in this draft if his health holds up. I think he could be a perfect fit here given his shooting ability for his size. We know he can score. What we unfortunately didn't get to see is how he held up defensively at a higher level.

Huge news for Arkansas as Daniel Gafford announces he will return for his sophomore season. He was more mid to late first round, but he will be back on radar next year.

Strange decision as he was pretty much guaranteed to be a first round pick- maybe even mid-teens. He's raw and I understand liking college. But its guaranteed $.

Wow, that's crazy -- dude was a borderline lotto pick... But I could see him going top-10 next season if he continues to improve.

Not surprised because Gafford could easily be a top 5 pick next season if he keeps improving. Still needs a lot of polish on his game. And bigs like him will always be valued so he isn't risking much except injury.

So I followed this a little more as an Arkansas fan, which, by no means makes me an expert or insider on his decision...

I could have seen him go either direction. He is incredibly athletic and defensively gifted. However, he did have issues with foul trouble his freshman year. Not too uncommon (see JJJ) but something that can easily be improved upon to help his stock. The other aspect of his game that can greatly improve is his front facing offense. Gafford could extremely benefit from a mid-range improvement. His back to the basket skills are fairly sound, though almost all guys his age can improve on that as well. But the introduction of a face up shot would do wonders for his best asset, which is finishing around the rim.

Another angle is that this draft is fairly loaded overall, but more bigs this year than next years crop. He could very easily solidify a top 10 selection, and I'm not sure he'd have to dramatically improve to do so, just show a little more. Barring injury or a pedestrian sophomore season, he should be squarely in the draft conversation next year.

The argument about improving draft stock never made much sense to me. The difference between 8&18 is like 1.3m. I’m approximating. Plus you delay FA by one year. Like Marcus Smart’s decision to stay an extra year could cost him millions upon millions. RFA is delayed, CBA changes and teams are pinched. Smart may have to settle for a significantly smaller deal than he could’ve signed last summer.

Thibs played 8 guys. KAT, Taj Gibson, Jeff Teague and Andrew Wiggins all played 39+ minutes with three of them clocking 42+. Meanwhile, Shabazz, who couldn’t break into Thibs rotation after the Butler injury, is playing 10+ minutes and averaging 10 ppg on 64% shooting for the wing-heavy Bucks.

My point is Thibs is one of the worst coaches in the league. Yeah this was a must-win for a team battling for a playoff spot, but he continually wears guys out and plays favorites. Thank God we have RC.

Based on the schedule, it looks like we don't have a high chance of moving into the top 3. But if numbers hold, then we are likely to retain the #4 spot.

Current lottery position
Team
Remaining opponents winning percentage
Number of lottery teams in remaining schedule

1 PHO .576 3
2 MEM .539 2
3 ATL .541 1
4 DAL .460 4
4 ORL .442 5
6 BRK .470 4
7 SAC .497 4
8 CHI .504 4

That was only part of my argument. We don't know what, if any feedback, he was getting. We only had a few mocks have him in the first round and that may have been premature.

The crux of his decision is likely skill based. He realizes he needs to work on several parts of his game and feels Arkansas is a better place for that at this time in his life. We can all argue NBA coaching or G league is better, but I'll never know as I haven't and won't ever be in the same position.

He is extremely overrated, that's for sure. I'm sure players love the minutes, but he is grinding them down in what is already a grind it out schedule of the NBA. Laughable he couldn't find minutes for Shabazz.
