I like JJJ a lot but can't get that bad performance in the tourney out of my head. He has all of the tools to be a perfect modern day center but not sure he has enough competitiveness to be an NBA star which is what we desperately need from this draft.
I certainly wouldn't be upset if we pick him and would definitely take him over Porter. Probably not Bamba though.

I originally compared him to Towns just to illustrate that MPG in college doesn’t say too much about how a player projects to perform in the pros, but the more I looked at their stats, the more I noticed they had basically the same production in college.

I’m skeptical that JJJ ends up as good as KAT on overall offense, but he’ll be light years better on defense. He’s right up there with Mikal and Mo as one of the best defenders in the draft. And 40% shooting from beyond the arc gives him the potential to be something we haven’t really seen in the league yet: a rim-protecting stretch-5... A unicorn.

Not sure who brought up Zach Collins, but he can’t hold Jaren Jackson Jr’s jock.

I personally think if J3 hits on all his potential he's the best big in the draft. But that's a big if. I too would take Bamba over him but he's loaded with potential.

6. Bamba

Toss up with the last 3. Like others have mentioned, as soon as we pick him I will immediately become fan biased 100%. I'm not as high on Bamba because I watched every UT game last year (live in austin). He had a stretch where he was dominate, but more often than not seemed completely out of it offensively. Will the game slow down for him? Will he get stronger? I'm sure he can and will, but it's enough to give J3 the edge imo.

Right now I think that there is a good chance we see quite abit of shakeup draft night.
I followed the Big 12 pretty close this year and I know what you mean about Bamba. There were games where he just didn't assert himself for someone with his size to help his team. It almost reminded me of watching Shawn Bradley at times as you expected him to completely dominate smaller centers but didn't for some reason.

However I'd still take him at #5 because he should get much better as he matures and has such freakish attributes that could make him a force someday. He did look very good at times and I remember him completely dominating Udoka Azubuike who is the same height and outweighs Bamba by at least 50lbs.

I feel like Jackson has the best all-around game, he just needs to learn discipline so he can hone in on those skills, whereas Bamba and Bagley have glaring weaknesses that need to be turned around (offense and defense, respectively).

@wojespn: Sources: Jaren Jackson Jr., had a monster workout for Suns on Sunday, and continues to be the long-term prospect those outside Top 4 are working to move up and select in draft. Offers to Sacramento, Atlanta and Memphis may become increasingly aggressive between now and June 21.

All of this shit is propaganda. What non-top guy hasn't had some sort of monster something? It's all poker.

The fact that it says "continues to be the long-term prospect" is almost negative in that he is what we all know he is...a guy that isn't going to come in next season and dominate.

I'm not sure that "plug and play" is that important to any of these team aside from Memphis. Franchise altering superstar is. This draft is packed with guys that have this kind of potential.

Again, few can boast the versatility and potential on both sides of the ball that J3 has already demonstrated. His knocks are lack of discipline and production as the youngest prospect in the draft on one of the most stacked teams in college basketball.

I love how we talk these guys down when all of them are likely to be better than any player we've drafted since Dirk (I'm guilty of it too).

Yeah this makes the draft really special, pretty much every guy has high ceiling on paper.

Bagley: Better Bosh
Doncic: Euro Wunderkind
Bamba: Unicorn
JJJ: 3&D Center Unicorn
Porter: Durant light
Trae: smaller Steph Curry

Because of everyone having such potential on paper its almost impossible for #2 until #6 to pick BPA, everyone has solid BPA arguments. So i think fit will play a significant role, something you normally shouldnt do drafting so high but his draft isnt a normal draft, so i think teams are going to draft a lot for fit.

So here we go:

Kings:
They got Fox, Hield and WCS as their main pieces. I think Doncic is maybe BPA AND the best fit for the Kings. The Kings offense is a mess and Fox isnt a typical floor general. Kings owner thinks of Hield as a new Steph Curry (remember), so Doncic could create tons of open shots for Hield. And also taking playmaking pressure of Fox. Taking Bamba and you pretty much shove WCS out of the door. The Kings have max cap, so they could run after a PF in the PF stacked free agency (Gordon, Parker, Randle, Favors....)

Fox - Hield - Doncic - Randle/Favors - WCS

Looks pretty solid. I really think they go Doncic with Bagley/Porter in their 2nd tier.

Hawks:
They have issues with Schröder and Schröder burned some bridges. He has a solid tradeable contract, so good chances he is gone (thats why they are looking at Trae too). Prince emerged as really nice SF and Collins is one of the 2018 draft steals BUT Collins has zero midrange game and a shakey corner three. He isnt really PF for the future and should be used as center.

So the Hawks have a need at PG/SG and PF (and go to guy scoring), explaining why they are high on Bagley and Trae. Porter could also jump into the 2nd tier for them. So my guess is Bagley - Trae - Porter for them. The Hawks GM loves Trae. Taking Bamba and the Hawks still have glaring holes everywhere.

Grizzlies:
Win now with Conley and Gasol. Brooks emerged as a really nice but undersized wing. Pretty much everyone thinks they are looking for a big scoring wing who is ready. This should nail it down to Doncic and Porter, with Bagley as third option because of his fit with Gasol.

Suns: Ayton
Kings: Doncic (Porter/Bagley)
Hawks: Bagley/Trae/Porter
Grizz: Doncic/Porter/Bagley

So my guess is there is still hope for our Bamba train. Kings have WCS, Hawks Collins and Grizz Gasol. They all could and should look for similar star potential at a different position.

JJJ is kind of a wildcard, i have no idea if one of the teams in front of us would bite because of his potential as stretch frontcourt player....

Also, why is JJJ working out for the suns if they’ve already committed to Ayton?

The good thing is that one of Bamba, Jackson or Bagley should be available at #5 so we should end up with a good big.

Porter or Doncic could be there as well so overall I'd say we are in a pretty damn good position to draft a franchise player. We have an opportunity to solve 1 of our 3 major needs with this pick and should have plenty of cap space to address one of the other 2.

I go back and forth on preference but I think we’ll be choosing one of:

J3
Mo.B
MPJ

I really don’t see Trae Young sneaking up into the top 4. Maybe I’m crazy I don’t see it in him. Of course if it happens more for us to choose from. But it’s a long shot.

At 5 we are going to get someone good

I’m more interested in trades. Will we trade up to nab someone we love? Trade down for more assets?

Trading down is my nightmare scenario. Or worse trading the pick entirely for a player.

Adding another top 10 pick is my dream.

Tighten your dream up to top 5, because we won't trade down.

I don't want to trade down. I want the FO to identify their guy and get him. Don't try and get cute thinking you can trade down a few spots. I wouldn't mind seeing them talk with Den about Faried and the 14th pick. I think Rick could make Faried useful and a PnR target and help our rebounding issues.

I remember when we had the 6th pick and traded it for the 9th and 19th.

Worked out pretty well for us.

9 got us Dirk and 19 got us Nash.

Huh? Nash was drafted by Phoenix in '96 at number 15.

Nevermind, I see that you referring to the trade.

I really do like JJJ's talent, but I just can't see the FO and the fanbase being patient with him. He is basically this year's Frank in that he is young and will need time to develop. Don't be surprised at a 7/4/1 season.

I don't care, but an entire season of people crapping on him would suck. And by midseason, are some of us going have meltdowns again if we aren't begging for a loss every game?

I actually feel that it's the perfect time to get a long term development player because the Mavs aren't anywhere near good. We already got the mostly NBA ready Smith and can afford to gamble a little more with a project. That's similar to why I like Bamba who is a little more ready but still a project.

Patience or not?

I just can't see taking a guy at 5 and using the words long term. That doesn't ride with me. Maybe if he's the best 16 year old the world has ever seen, maybe Bronny James. But at 5, I can see a risk like taking MPJ because he has the best chances that people know of to become a superstar, but not a guy we have to wait 4 years for. We need some positive momentum and a something that resembles a core to attract free agents as well as keeping DSJ around. If we aren't taking a guy that is going to come out similar to DSJ and bring excitement and show obvious promise, then wtf exactly are we doing?

I would say if you are looking for a little excitement, development, AND some production next season, then Bamba no question. The length and personality of that guy will bring people to the seats without a doubt.

I don't see JJJ with that kind of moxy to get a rise out of people.

I think so as well, but I also think MPJ and Doncic would provide that too.

I think we traded our unprotected 1999 1st round pick along with the 1998 19th pick for Nash. That pick turned out to be the 9th pick.....Shawn Marion.

"What the people got, unexpectedly, was Nash, who fills the Mavericks' mammoth void at point guard. Nelson was unable to pry the Canadian from Phoenix at midseason - instead taking Cedric Ceballos for Dennis Scott - but nabbed Nash this time by packaging the first-round pick in 1999 with Garrity, Bubba Wells and Martin Muursepp.
The Suns refused to make the trade unless the pick was left unprotected. That means the Mavericks must surrender it no matter how high in next June's lottery it falls."

Wonder if Donnie can pull off something similar yielding Bamba and Jalen Brown?
DSJ/Brown/Barnes/Dirk/Bamba would be a fun team to watch this season.

A very human look at MPJ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MxCjDsiza8

To my previous points about MPJ, his athleticism and ball handling are tremendously over rated. He OFTEN times settles for mediocre shots. Can he shoot? yes. But coming out of college his game is far away from his most common comp KD. Not saying I wouldn't be good with us picking him if he is healthy, but his game is far from solidified.

It would be pick #5 (Bamba) for Jaylen Brown -- you're not getting both... Boston isn't just trying to dump the guy, they're looking to move up in the draft to acquire Bamba.

Yeah no Jaylen, but we could nab Porter and Bridges or something similar if we traded assets future picks to get into the first round again.

I think that passing is something that can be taught. It's good that he has an alpha dog mentality. I think Carlisle can do wonders with this kid. I'd be happy with this pick. Don't know if the Mavs got balls to pick him though.

Another reason why I don't like picking someone like Porter is that he'll come in trying to prove a point. That's not ideal because clashing with NBA talent as rook is tough anyway, and much harder when you think you have to absolutely show off. From the guys that are likely available at #5, he remains my last choice by far.

Maybe we get lucky and Sac/Atl do something stupid like Trae Young or whatever, but I'm also still not opposed trading down if Doncic/Bamba and Ayton are all gone. If there's a nice package to #8-#10 that guarantees us major assets or a nice player and, say Mikal Bridges, why not? That would require the Mavs to read the draft pretty accurately though.

Agreed ... Dirk's inability to pass is why we lost against Nellie's Warriors. His ability to learn to pass out of double/triple-teams is part of why we won a championship.
