February 9, 2003 Yugoslav Prospect Eligible for Draft By THE NEW YORK TIMES ATLANTA, Feb. 8 — Commissioner David Stern announced today that the N.B.A. ruled the Yugoslav forward Darko Milicic eligible to enter the N.B.A. draft this year, repealing a bylaw that the players' union was prepared to fight. Milicic turns 18 on June 20, six days before the draft, and the league ruled that if an international player turned 18 in the calendar year — and not 45 days before the draft — he would be eligible. Milicic, who has played professionally for three years in Europe, is projected to be the second overall pick behind LeBron James. "On the basis of the players' support, we've instructed our lawyers to make an agreement that would have the impact to make him eligible," Stern said. It was inevitable that Stern would back down once the players assoc decided to back Milicic.

Playing proffesional at 15? He is going to retire at 25 and to be a head coach at 28, to win his first ring as a coach at 31 and to play golf and to be announcer at 35, with 4 grandchildren and a retirement home in Chapala at 37. Hall of fame at 39. To pass away at 40 because plain boring.

The NBA owners need to take a good long and hard look at David Stern, and after they get through puking decide to replace him. Stern has not kept up with the times and is not what the NBA needs. This case is proof in point. It should not have drug out so long. No reason why that kid shouldn't have been allowed to enter the draft except for David Stern.

Chiwas it´s quite normal to turn pro in europe that early. It doesn´t allways mean you´re a full time pro though. Most players simply sign with a club and recieve some money, but they still go to school for example.
Concerning Milicic it will be intressting to see where he gets drafted. I think Nr.2, if only for the fact that LeBron will be a much bigger draw with media and fans. Maybe that GM will regret passing on Milicic though after a few years. |

I agree with you fidel, who would have known that when dirk got drafted he would be the player he is today. Who went first in that draft? I think it was olowokandi, he sucks now and well we'll just have to see what he can bring if he gets drafted at no.2 . It would be intersting to see cleveland not draft james and get him instead.
