By ANDREW BAGNATO, AP Sports Writer August 19, 2006 SAPPORO, Japan (AP) -- The United States wanted to make a statement as it opened the world championships against Puerto Rico. However, it took the Americans most of the first half Saturday to get it going. Carmelo Anthony scored 21 points, and LeBron James and Kirk Hinrich each added 15 as the U.S. overcame a sluggish start before rolling to a 111-100 victory in Sapporo Arena. Carlos Arroyo scored 23 points to lead Puerto Rico, and Elias Ayuso added 14. The U.S., ranked No. 1 in the FIBA world rankings, improved to 8-1 against Puerto Rico in world championship play. But the 11th-ranked Puerto Ricans weren't intimidated. They led by four points midway through the second quarter. U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski has stressed defense during training camp. And when the Americans' shots weren't falling early on, their defense kept them in the game. Trailing 12-9 with 6 minutes to go in the first quarter, the Americans came up with steals on three consecutive possessions. First Chris Paul stole a pass and fed LeBron James, who dunked. Then Dwyane Wade snagged a pass and went the length of the court for another jam. After Josh Howard made it three steals in a row, he blocked guard Elias Ayuso's shot, setting up Shane Battier's 3-pointer.  The sequence led to a 9-0 run that put the U.S. ahead 17-12 with 3:49 to play in the first quarter. "That's the way to get in the passing lanes," Krzyzewski told his players during a timeout. The U.S. had nine steals in the first half -- three by Paul, the quick-footed New Orleans guard. But the Americans struggled to contain Puerto Rico's scorers, allowing them to shoot 55 percent from the floor in the first half, including 4-of-7 (57 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc. Puerto Rico, which led 24-23 after one quarter, pushed its advantage to as many as four points before the U.S. went up 39-38 on Carmelo Anthony's 15-footer with 5:06 to play in the first half. The U.S. closed out the half with a 15-7 run capped by back-to-back 3-pointers by Joe Johnson to take a 57-51 lead into intermission. Puerto Rico shot 55 percent from the floor in the first half. The Americans were never threatened after halftime, opening the third quarter with a 12-2 run on their way to an 87-74 lead heading into the fourth. They snuffed Puerto Rico's hopes for an upset by scoring the first seven points of the final quarter. The U.S. faces China Sunday in the second of its five Group D games. Puerto Rico plays Senegal.

By JIM O'CONNELL, AP Basketball Writer August 19, 2006 HIROSHIMA, Japan (AP) -- Japan had the sellout crowd behind it. Germany had Dirk Nowitzki. The 7-foot center had 27 points and 10 rebounds to lead Germany to an 81-70 victory Saturday in the opening game of the first round of the FIBA world championships, negating the host's home-country advantage. Nowitzki, who led the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA finals this season, dominated inside and outside early, scoring 20 points and grabbing nine rebounds as Germany took a 50-37 halftime lead. He had 15 points in the first quarter, including two 3-pointers. Despite its size disadvantage inside, Germany took its biggest lead of the game at 61-42 with 5:27 left in the third quarter, but Japan refused to fold, using a 10-1 run to get within 62-52 with 2:49 left in the period. Taking advantage of a dry spell from the field by Germany -- it didn't have a field goal over the final 5:27 of the third quarter -- Japan got as close as 64-56 on a driving dunk by Kosuke Takeuchi with 35 seconds left in the period. The crowd, which constantly banged inflatable plastic sticks throughout the game, let out a roar and coach Zeljko Pavlicevic was waving his arms at the nice move by one of Japan's 6-foot-10 twins. Germany was finally able to start scoring again at the start of the fourth quarter and a 9-4 run made it 75-58, and Japan was never within 10 points the rest of the way. Germany, the bronze medalists in the 2002 world championships, shot 63 percent from the field (19-for-30) in the first half and outrebounded Japan 22-9 over the first two quarters. Ademola Okulaja, who played at North Carolina from 1995-1999, had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Germany, which finished with a 45-24 rebound advantage. Kei Igarashi led Japan with 13 points, while Takehiko Orimo added 10. Kosuke Takeuchi finished with eight points and his brother Joji had two. Germany plays New Zealand on Sunday, while Japan faces Angola.
