A tough week has hurt the Phoenix Suns' chances of catching the Dallas Mavericks for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Perhaps Josh Howard's absence will give them a boost.
In danger of losing five straight for the first time in over four years, the Suns look to take advantage of a Mavericks team that will likely be without Howard on Tuesday night.
Coming off an 0-4 road trip, Phoenix (34-29) trails eighth-place Dallas (38-25) by four games in its quest for a fifth straight playoff appearance. A loss Tuesday would give the Suns five straight for the first time since a six-game skid in January 2005.
"We're in desperate position," Phoenix point guard Steve Nash said. "Let's do our best, not panic."
Dallas, meanwhile, is trying to improve its playoff position as it opens a four-game road trip. The Mavs still have hopes of moving into one of the top four spots in the West, which would give them home-court advantage in the first round of the postseason.
"Everything is still in reach," Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki said. "We just have to play well together and we'll be right there."
The Mavs, though, will have a tough time moving up in the conference if Howard has to miss an extended period of time. The swingman sat out Dallas' 119-103 win over Washington on Saturday night because of a sprained left ankle.
Howard, third on the Mavs with 18.0 points a contest, is scheduled to visit a specialist to determine how long he'll remain out of the lineup. He aggravated the injury in a loss to Oklahoma City on March 2, but toughed it out the entire game in a win over San Antonio on Wednesday night before sitting out the second half of a loss at New Orleans the following evening.
Jason Terry, who returned March 1 after missing eight games with a broken bone in his left hand, matched a season high with 33 points versus the Wizards.
"Without Josh Howard right now, we have to get our attempts up," said Terry, averaging 19.7 points in 55 games. "It's a big void to fill. Dirk and I taking 20 or 25 shots a night wouldn't be crazy." (comment - DO IT!)
Nowitzki led the Mavs with 34 points, and is averaging 29.7 in his last six games. The veteran forward is averaging 30.6 points in his last 10 contests against the Suns, including a 39-point effort in Dallas' 112-97 win Dec. 4.
Phoenix evened the season series as Shaquille O'Neal had a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds in a 128-100 win Jan. 9.
O'Neal was held to 14 points on 6-for-16 shooting in Phoenix's 103-98 loss to San Antonio on Sunday. The losing streak has dropped the Suns to 6-6 under coach Alvin Gentry, who replaced Terry Porter after the All-Star break.
Nash has been one of Phoenix's few bright spots over the last four games, averaging 26.0 points and shooting 55.0 percent. He was held to nine points in January's matchup with the Mavs after averaging 22.3 points in his previous eight meetings against them.

Mavs suck on the road. They don't have the firepower to stay with Phx. They will get blown out.

The only way we get blown out is if Damp gets in foul trouble. As long as that doesn't happen this will be a competitive game at least.
If they try to guard Kidd with Nash we better punish them down low.

I hate this game for the Mavs. The Suns are desperate, at home and probably more talented than the Mavs anyway, esp. without JoHow.
The 6.5 line seems generous.

Tough line to bet on IMO but I definitely think Damp gets in foul trouble.
Dirk gets loose on them for 32/12/4.
Hopefully Devean George gets the flu and doesn't make the game.

Not having Josh vs a potentially fast paced Suns team presents a problem.
You'd love to see a killer instinct mentality tonight in the desert but I guess we'll see what they can do without all the weapons.

eh...difficult game! Suns will play very hard because beating Mavs is the only chance they have to reach 8° spot!
I think that Suns will ride Shaq during first and second quarter.
According to me, also thanks to Howard's absence, Suns are more possibilities to win but, on the other side, Terry and Kidd must attack Nash ever and ever.
Then when Shaq will be on the bench, Bass and Singleton must make the difference under the basket..

Dunno about Barbosa...he is pretty inconsistent.
Louis Amundson on the other hand, that guy could present a problem on the boards and if they try him out on Dirk he'll either have a "super spare" kind of night or Dirk will light his butt up.
I don't watch the Suns a lot but I did on Sunday and I thought Amundson did some good things on defense vs. Duncan. He is a fighter and won't back down in the trenches and he seems like a pretty good energy guy. I don't know if that's a regular night for him or if he was just up for the game.
He's definitely an under the radar guy to watch tonight.

YEah, we could use one of these. Too bad we can't stretch Bass out another 3 or 4 inches.

I haven't really seen Amundson play, but I reckon that Singleton fits the "He is a fighter and won't back down in the trenches and he seems like a pretty good energy guy" description.

Can we win a road game please.
PHX isn't even "talented". Grant Hill as the starting POWER forward? Yeah... I would say they're depleted of talent without Amare.

Barbosa will burn as alive, Barnes will be unguardable... Let's hope Wright, Bass and Singleton will served as the equalizer..

Yes, summertime... I almost forgot it. Well, that means 4 am for me (Finland; EET). Honestly, I am not that pleased about it . I already planned to go to bed early, to stand up at 5 for watching the game and to start studying afterwards, which would imply something around 7.30 am... Now I have to rethink my plans.

As usual. Honestly, I would be more surprised to see a game in which a scrub (doesn't matter which team) doesn't have a career night against us...

Its not about stretching him out, its about attitude. Bass can only score and thats it. Hes D is probably the worst on the team and he is just not good at making smart decisions. But hes still a good part of our team...

My apologies... we are in daylight saving time now so it's actually CDT, not CST. I changed the thread title.
