Erick Dampier: Tony Parker must be put on his back
Quote:
Tony parker scored 38 points Monday night - many of them coming on a variety of layups and runners.
As Erick Dampier, dressed in a natty creme-colored sportscoat with a brown shirt and matching tie, wiped the sweat from his brow he vowed to stop Parker's personal layup drill.
"Parker got into the teeth of our defense and caused problems," he said. "Every time he drives the lane, we have to put him on his back. The first foul has to tell him he;s in for a long night.
"My first foul Thursday night is going to put him on his back. I guarantee it."

Of course that's not going to happen, he will probable get fined for the comment and Parker will continue to get in the lane without getting hammered. If he is trying to send a message, that is the right time do it though because Parker can not continue to run a layup drill if the Mavs want to win this series.

This is what you say privately in the locker room to each other. (They should have said it at half time last night)
Not to the media, Damp you lummox.
The lights are shining a little too brightly for the little Mavericks again...

Damp is an idiot. Play good defense on Duncan and rebound the damn ball and let others worry about Parker. Talk is cheap

not a smart thing to say, but smart to do. all small guards who are protected by the league( wade, paul , parker ) are gonna get every touch foul, why not make them earn it. when you hear a whistle, finish him off. Teams have used the "get rough" strategy with Dirk, and everyones cool with it. Its time to flip the script.

Edit: Now that i think about it. He's probably trying to scare tony parker and has no intention of actually fouling. But if he does he probably is going to get called for a flagrant

I'd get down on Damp about his big mouth, but I don't see any harm in allowing him to act "notorious" in his final days as a Maverick - it might actually increase his trade value a bit this summer...

Scare tactics. Hopefully for the sake of his relationship Tony'll only experience shrinkage on the court.

Late in the 4th Parker was going up vs hollins to the rim, Parker shoulda ended up in the 3rd row there. Hollins has to know his place.

If you go back to the Game 1 gamethread I was talking about this same situation, Tony Parker has to be knocked down on his way to the basket. Nothing dirty but you have to, because if you don't he will continue to go the basket every chance he gets.

Mavs players love telling the media the gameplan.

The first time EDampier puts anyone on his back, will be the first time I have seen Damp play with enough emotion to actually be a center in the NBA.
As it is, Stackhouse would have done it, maybe Terry, but none of the rest of them play that way. None of them are mean and nasty enough, especially Damp.

Hard fouls are nothing new. Even talking about them is not new. Robert Horry used to talk about being an "old-fashioned" played taught to commit hard fouls.
Still--probably not wise to say it before hand. Probably will make the refs watch him a little more closely.

Not a smart thing to say to the media. Stupid move by Damp.
It's one thing to do it but don't announce it so the refs and the league will be keeping an eye for it.
Parker gets hit and falls to the ground a lot so I don't see it working as a scare tactic.
Terry got a flagrant for the shoulder shove so what does Damp think he'll get if he follows through on his threat with everyone watching for it?

Don't flagrant him, just do what the Spurs do to Dirk: every time he drives he gets beat up a bit. Do the same thing to Parker, foul him every time he goes to the basket to prevent the easy lay up.

It doesn't mean his intentions are a flagrant but when you announce to the media that your first foul will be to intentionally put him on his back and the refs/league will be watchful of that. Especially with a star player like Parker.
If he said we have to be more physical with him that's fine but to tell everyone that your mission is to put him on his back is not smart thinking.

Genius move saying this to the media. Genius. Did he think he was gonna put fear in Parker's mind by saying this publicly?

Can we activate stackhouse for game 3? Let him get a Flag 2 within the first 5 minutes?
I don't mean he should actually give him an injury because you can look at a guy cross eyed and get a flag 1 these days in the nba.
*Sigh*...I wish the nba was called like it was in the 80's.

It wasn't the brightest thing to say, but it's pretty obvious if Parker gets beat up the Spurs won't have much to fall back on. If he didn't make this a public notice I think we would be fine, but now the refs are going to be looking closely at Damp.
I say get some second unit players to give him some hard fouls, why not? It doesn't matter who does it as long as he's getting banged up.

It's not like nobody's ever thought of this before. Parker's just really good at taking the contact and getting back up. If bouncing off of Shaq hasn't slowed him down in the past, the "second best center in the NBA" isn't going to deter him.
And it was just plain stupid to say that. If the officials over-react to a hard foul, it will be Erick's fault. Either do it or don't, but don't give everybody a warning beforehand.

Oy vey. Look for Damp to get called for a foul just for looking in Parker's direction next game.
Although if he follows through, gets Parker with a few hard, smart fouls, and keeps him off-guard and out of the paint, I will be overjoyed. So I'll reserve final judgment until after the game.

Erick finally shows some sort of passion for the game and everyone freaks out. Yes, he will probably get a flagrant if he tries anything but who cares? It'll be completely worth it if he follows through with this.

I don't think there is problem with the refs calling it. I mean hell, he had 25 points before anyone thought of putting a hard enough foul on him that he didn't make the shot. I think I counted 3 and-1s in the first 10 minutes.
I think he's just stating the obvious. If you're gonna foul someone, make sure they don't get the bucket. That's something they teach since Jr. High.

I'm all for the rare citing of "Passionate Damp" on the basketball court, but declaring your intentions to the media in the lockeroom is so boneheaded. Whether or not Damp follows through on his threat, there are always hard fouls in the lane (yes, even when the Mavs are defending). Parker is probably already planning his flop once he gets within arms' length of Damp. He will writhe in pain and curl up on the floor like a French croissant while the refs' give Damp a flagrant and David Stern and the pinheads in the league office decide that such on-court conduct, coupled with Damp's overt threats, merit a one-game suspension. How many times has that happened to our Mavs come playoff time?

Now that he has made it public...he needs to follow through and make it worth it.
Most likely the NBA will assess a flagrant and a game suspension...so Damp, go overboard...put parker on his back and hopefully out for a couple of games!!!
Nothing long-term, but make sure he feels it!!! Whatever you do, don't let the frenchman punk ya!!!
Somebody on the Mavs needs to show some HOCKEY emotion in the game...turn this into a Streetball series. And if the refs don't call it when the Mavs get hacked in the paint, then you might as well turn this into a brawl!!!
I want to see some fire, some passion, some anger from the Mavs...enough is enough!!!

The Mavs aren't the Jazz -- you won't see this kind of basketball.

Damps focus was entirely on Duncan and wasn't even anywhere near enough to intentionally faul Parker. It appeared that Duncan was drawing him out intentionally to open the center for Parker. That is where RC should have adjusted by bringing in Hollins who is quick enough and does play off Duncan enough to play off the ball defense. Damp did that the first game but he looked too sluggish in the second. RC never seems to play Hollins unless he has no other choice.

he's had 5 years to show a passion for the game in dallas. one comment after an ass kickin' where he did anything but control the paint isn't going to change that.
this is just another example of the story of his career - bigger talk than play.

Put me down for not overly upset. I don't want to resort to dirty play to win, but I'm ok with good solid hard defense. If Damp gets suspended? So be it. Bass and JJ were huge in game 1, lets see what Hollins can do on Timmy.
