I for one, certainly would have been disappointed if we landed Ariza (and thats all) with our off season after having big bucks to offer. (And I said as much before all this went down.)
|
Yes and no. The disappointment is going from potentially having another max free agent (ie Bosh) come in and keeping Parsons, and going from that to Ariza. Not from going from Parsons to Ariza. The former would have made us a contender. We aren't with just one of Parsons or Ariza either way.

The fact that you can have two "superstar best in position" players on your team and feel like a player like Parsons can't be your 3rd best option says it all. Morey has sold the fanbase into this idea that you NEED 3 superstars in today's NBA to be a championship team. This is just nonsense. Get a real coach, force your players to learn how to play defense, and you will be surprised with how far you can go.

Seriously what else do you need if the best center and the best shooting guard is on the same team? Having Parsons as 3rd guy isnt enough? Its simple. Leadership. And Howard and beardneck dont have it. I cant wait to watch the underachieving continue in Houston.

It's not that Parsons can't be a 3rd best player. It's that he's not a good enough 3rd player as to where you can give him a max deal and kill your chances of adding other pieces that aren't minimum salary dudes. Bosh is not a superstar and that's who we were targeting to go along with Bosh. It's about staying flexible to keep building a team, whether that be adding a 3rd max guy or a bunch of other good pieces.
But him at that salary is ok for y'all since Dirk is giving such a huge discount.

A quality starting PF and PG would help. I'm hoping Jones can continue to develop this season to be that PF (he really was taken to school in the playoffs). So would a bench. The Rockets were behind most Western playoffs teams in those areas last season. Even when LA had Kobe and Shaq, they had decent supporting players and a bench.

Say it isn't so. No more Kardashians around our players (although she does seem sane and this whole thing was pretty harmless)

Trade Parsons. I'm terrified of the Kardashian bug.

We should put a non-Kardashian clause into all new contracts.

To be fair Parsons always seemed a bit frat boyish, so it doesn't surprise me that he would get mixed up with this ilk after his big contract. It is slightly concerning only because it brings up memories of Odom, but I don't really care about this or his fashionista aspirations so long as he performs. Dirk has spoiled us by always being about team and putting his brand a distant second. Add to that the NBA culture has changed and with ESPN's unending praise of Lebron it is now not only accepted but encouraged to put your brand above all else. Guys like Dirk and Duncan are a dying breed.

Hopefully it is just a lark and he's as serious about improving as we were in acquiring him.

Not sure what his flirting with a woman at a club has to do with whether he's "serious about improving."
Tony Parker married Eva Longoria and released a chart-topping rap album in France. He turned out to be a pretty decent player.

It also may be a sign of youth. When you have a bunch of guys in the 35-40 range, they're all probably already married (and perhaps with children). When you get younger, you also get the single guys (and the instability that comes with that)

Nothing really. I don't think this is anything more than tmz talk really, but we are talking about it. Parsons isn't parker and he isn't odom.
But distractions are distractions. Some handle them better than others. Therefore I hope these distractions do not distract him from improving as much as we have invested in him.
There is talk of him bring the face of the franchise once the dirkster hangs it up. Them be some big shoes to fill fella, and they won't get filled by prancing around with a bunch of bimbos, but in the gym, eating right and getting plenty of sleep. Iow one guy ( dirk goes home and sleeps at his moms house ) the other guy is publicly doing something with a kardashian.
I know they are different but I also know which one I would rather invest 16 million per year in.

I would bet that most NBA players are playing with (lady) "distractions" for much of their careers. Dirk himself had a ridiculous case of being conned by a woman and he still played great.
Now if your point is particular to that media attention seeking family, ok. But distractions in their private lives is nothing new for NBA players/professional athletes.

Let's just give the guy some time. Everyone handles the media, fame, and money in different ways. Just because he enjoys himself in a public way doesn't mean he's the wrong guy moving forward. As long as he takes care of his business in the off season and is the solid teammate he has the rep of being, I see nothing wrong with a little P. Diddy swag to his off the court life. Change is coming in 3 years to Dallas whether we like it or not.
Initially I thought we were just poking fun, but I think there are some posters genuinely concerned. I kinda of get this, especially because he has come off somewhat cocky in the last few months, but its quite premature to start worrying at all.

Just for the record, I am not really concerned. But the dude has a lot of expectations on him. He's going to be looked at differently

I'm personally glad that it's so boring. We have 15 amazing guys on the roster now. No more waiting with baited breath on who is going to be our starter.
Offseason is probably a lot more entertaining now for Houston.
Edit: looks like they have a full roster-- just not a full NBA roster.
Howard/Motiejunas
T-Jones/Josh Powell/Capela/Robert Covington
Ariza/Alonzo Gee/Jeff Adrien
Harden/Nick Johnson/Scotty Hopson
Beverley/Ish Smith
They're....young at least

Wait, didn't Harden and Dwight say it was easy to replace roleplayers??? Maybe they should be running the FO instead of Morey... Their depth is turrible.

Don't tell the rockettes that. Browsing their site, they think their depth is their strength. Maybe harden, Dwight are just reflecting their illogical fan base.

...continuing the potential of Parsons of becoming a star here so that we don't taint the Dirk is Great thread.
I think the best path for Parson's to become a star is defense. And he really does have the potential to be a very good defender. In this highlight video (12:36) you can see that he can play some really solid defense.

My previous comments on Parsons:
I think Parsons needs to add one more element to his game to reach another level. Since he's 6'10, I would say post game. He can handle the ball, he can shoot, he can drive and he can pass. If he could add a few consistent post-moves to his game he'd be at 20+ ppg right there.

Lawl at Harden in half of those plays. So awful. Just standing there watching his man blow by or not even trying to go for the rebound.
Still ,Parsons is capable when he puts in the effort, which is nice. Rick will polish up the team defense, but it's nice to know that Parsons can also put it into overdrive for the last 4-5 plays if called on to do so.
Also love that when he gets the ball outside, he does a nice job of reading the defense. When it's there, he totally drives it in. He doesn't have ridiculous speed, but he reads the defense well and uses diagonal slashes/change-ups to get what he wants. We need that. It'll scramble defenses and get us a better shot. We don't need a spot-up three every time.
Mostly I'm just impressed with his passing. There were some laser passes there. So excited to see what he can do playing with Dirk, Ellis, and Chandler.

You sir are a scholar and a gentleman. I was beginning to get a little perturbed at the dirkster thread's wandering as well.. I wanted to respond but refrained.

He needs to shoot better... He does handle it well and that's a plus. Shooting better takes a guy into another stratasphere..
I just happened to be wandering around youtube and happened to watch again bird highlights. My favorite players of all time are (bird, magic, dirk).
Bird was nuts...

What is this talk about how Nicolas Batum torched Parsons in their first round matchup? I only saw parts of the series but looking at the stats I don't see anything crazy. Maybe someone could clarify this for me?
Game 1:
Batum: 14 Points, 9 Rebounds, 3 Assists, 1 Block, 2 Steals
Parsons: 24 Points, 6 Rebounds, 1 Assist, 1 Steal
Game 2:
Batum: 6 Points, 4 Rebounds, 6 Assists, 1 Steal
Parsons: 15 Points, 7 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 1 Steal
Game 3:
Batum: 26 Points, 9 Rebounds, 5 Assists, 3 Steals
Parsons: 15 Points, 4 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 1 Block
Game 4:
Batum: 25 Points, 6 Rebounds, 6 Assists
Parsons: 26 Points, 8 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 1 Block
Game 5:
Batum: 15 Points, 5 Rebounds, 4 Assists, 2 Blocks
Parsons: 20 Points, 4 Rebounds, 4 Assists, 1 Steal
Game 6:
Batum: 9 Points, 2 Rebounds, 7 Assists, 1 Block, 3 Steals
Parsons: 16 Points, 12 Rebounds, 3 Assists.
Looking at these stats, how can anyone say Batum somehow torched Parsons in this series? I don't see it, but then again I didn't pay much attention to this series. Maybe someone who watched this series can explain how things played out?

If there is anything he needs most, it's a mid-range game and if there is anyone in the world that can teach him that, it's Dirk.

I just happened to be wandering around youtube and happened to watch again bird highlights. My favorite players of all time are (bird, magic, dirk).
