Default Official trade watch 2020-2021

Mavs won't do shit but at least some people find it fun to watch for trades.

Assets
Brunson's expiring deal
Luka
???
FRP in 2022 - NOPE, can't trade until we draft this summer
FRP in 2023 - NOPE, goes to the Knicks
FRP in 2024 - NOPE, can't trade until 2024
second-round picks?

At least Cuban thinks we can get Dragic.

Lots of rumors that when Dec 15 hit, we’d be able to make big trades. That obviously didn’t happen, so now we get to wait until February 10 before we learn that Cuban likes the roster and we’ll let Brunson walk and replace him with an aging Dragic in the off-season

What do we do with Brunson? Some team will likely offer him a starting role, and big money in the offseason. Do we move him before the deadline to not risk losing him for nothing? I think he’s too well liked around the organization for them to move him for anything less than an all star caliber player.

Trade THJ for a trade exception.

DP for anything.

Miami loves THJ - could we pry ANYONE loose there?
Keeping Brunson is going to be a big contract.

I can't believe we basically have to trade Brunson after the season he is having. I seriously hate the FO.

Which would totally be FO then we lose him for nothing. There is little to no way he gives up a max offer and a starting "the man" spot to be in Luka's shadow.

Which is why IF they hope to keep him, you gotta start him next to Luka to show that he has a starting spot. I'm ok with him getting paid up because someone finally has EARNED their money.

I have no idea how Brunson and his camp thinks....but I know for me I'd look to find a team I'm a better fit for that needs a ball handler or a point guard. Just to maximize my earnings in the NBA.

Now that's me. Maybe Brunson likes it here and likes being in Dallas and likes playing with Luka.

But if Brunson is thinking like me they need to get some form of compensation for him.

Part of me also feels like the best this team can do in improving their team is trading their biggest asset which is Brunson.

If they are serious bout improving this team....as its currently constructed....I just don't know how they do it lol. Brunson is literally the only piece they have to trade and he plays point guard.

Kevin O’Connor of the Ringer reported that Domantas Sabonis wants out of Indiana. That’s what I was told by multiple league sources as well, and that it wasn’t just this season, but instead going back to last year Sabonis was looking for a change of scenery.

Marc Stein: Based on my information, I don’t think (the Mavericks) are pursuing Nurkic at all. I think they want a big with more foot speed than what Nurkic could provide. – via Marc Stein

Harrison Barnes and Buddy Hield are expected to be on the market. Barnes, in particular, will get a large amount of offers. However, one executive cautioned on believing they’ll make a move.

There are obviously a few possibilities

A) We look to improve and somehow the new kid works a miracle. Obviously, I'd love to snag Sabonis or someone like that and make a push, but I think this is the least likely.

B) We do nothing or very little and scrape into the playoffs. We look at being both mediocre and 30-40mill over the cap without re-signing Brunson. Either we pay 200million for the same team we had this year or we let Brunson walk and are STILL mediocre and over the cap

C) We blow it up and shed salary to get below the cap. Why pay the tax if we're going to perpetually be borderline playoff.

Obviously we cant be picky, but if im being honest Sabonis doesnt move the needle for me.

Knowing Cuban, I dont think theres a chance in hell they trade Brunson. Theyll roll the dice, probably overpay to keep him, and he becomes a starter.

THJ has to be traded at some point. Bullock too. I dont think itll be before the deadline though.

Mavs will probably do what they always do. Stand pat and if anything falls out at the end like Dragic, theyll pick him up. Although I think theres a tiny package to be found out of DFS, Trey Burke, WCS.

I think we could deal with the Pacers and hopefully Carlisle has some pull as he loves Brunson, Powell, Maxi and the like. Give me one of Sabonis, Turner, or Brogdon. Out of the three, I'd like Turner the most. He'd fit well next to KP and at the least, provide flexibility to move KP should the right deal come along after the season.

Yeah I mean with Sabonis who am I shipping out to get him? Porizingis? Doesn't move the needle IMO.

I expect them to hold on to Brunson which may be a mistake. Do the Mavs REALLY need Brunson or is it about making sure their one young talent doesn't leave?

They have Brunson...and even Levert can run point for them. The last spot they need is a point guard...but if they want to give us Brogdon I sure would take it lol.

The Mavs need Brunson, or someone like him. The Mavs desperately need more quality attempts near the rim, and Brunson is the only player on the team besides Luka that is providing them.

If it's me as mentioned before

I'd trade Brunson, kleber, Bullock and THJ to pick up both Turner and lavert who gives you two legitimate starters

Luka, Lavert, DFS, Kp and Turner.

I'd much rather just try and win games with that unit instead of continuing to milk that cow with current unit

That's why I can't say they "need" him. Because at the end of the day they still have Luka. But if you can get me a legit #2 in here who's scorer?

You don’t want Luka being the only player on the team who can consistently beat the defense off the dribble. If your legit #2 does that, then great, but I think Brunson could be underrated by some of us. We still don’t know what his ceiling is.

“Jalen is at an absurd 76% fg at the rim - 98th percentile in the NBA. Same as Jokic, better than Giannis, Lebron, AD...ridiculous”

Trust me, no fans WANT to trade him, but losing him for nothing would be yet another disaster that I don't think this franchise can handle.

He should be both starting AND running the second unit.

and he's a smallish point guard at that. He's a middling starting pg who will disappear in the playoffs against defense with length. The Mavericks need to take a hard pass on overpaying him and let him go if they can't trade him. Learn from your mistakes. That means to not let assets leave for nothing as well as not OVERPAY players, especially limited ones, and Brunson is limited by his size. He also has the benefit of playing on a team with a lot of garbage, so he shines in comparison.

You're def not shipping out KP for him. Sabonis is on a solid contract under 19m while KP is around 30m. Rick just left the KP puzzle he couldn't figure out, I don't see any way he has interest in that again.

I do think Rick would have interest in DFS and maybe even Powell, but that's not netting you anything worth the hassle.

THJ contract matches Sabonis but it's far from an even trade. Also matches Le Vert and Turner but again those players have more value. I don't even consider Brogdan as gettable, he's too valuable.

Sabonis moves the needle for me because it's a big upgrade over Maxi, WCS, DP and Brown. He can pass and score in many ways. Obviously rebounds well too.

Maybe there's a package that interests them but it's gonna cost some "core" pieces....which is still probably a win and a good thing.

I don't think Brunson gets traded because we can go over to sign him. He's putting up big numbers this season and having lots of success and there's a chance Cuban learned from his mistake with Nash...but then again...it's Cuban. Either way that's an asset that we cant afford to fumble away.

How this Trade Deadline goes is more exciting than our season. It's really the only thing that can breathe life back into this dead horse.

Been reading Utah wants another wing defender. Don’t see any way they have enough for Jerami Grant or even Harrison Barnes. Salary matching is difficult without Bogi and he valuable, would be a lateral move to trade him for them. They also owe a couple picks already, not sure if they can move their 2024 1st.

Anyone think they’d have any interest in Bullock? He’d be much cheaper to get. They ship us a salary, and a young player. Or a heavily protected 1st in 2024. Like lottery protected. I doubt they’d do it, just curious what y’all think.

How this Trade Deadline goes is more exciting than our season. It's really the only thing that can breathe life back into this dead horse.
I thought Brunson is an UFA so we don’t have any rights to go over to sign him?

1) we can only extend him to 12m a year starting during the season
2) once we get to free agency, we have full bird rights which means we can go up to the super max with him
3) however, he’s a UFA so he could choose his fate, even if we matched all offers or even offered him more than other teams.
4) if he walks, we’re still over the cap
5) whatever we pay him, if we do, will put us deeper in the tax

We've done dumb stuff, but imagine letting JB walk because THJ,Maxi,DP and Bullock are way overpaid.

Maxi? Even less than the MLE for 7/5 and efficient scoring/defense. 7% of cap for a solid contributor. I'd even argue that he's only of our best contracts other than Brunson/DFS.

It's not about letting him walk. I don't think the Mavs can keep him even if they offer him max money.

The Knicks are desperate for a PG and will have 18.5 mill to spend this summer. And I'm sure they'll manage to clear cap in other ways to make a big offer.

Didn't mean him individually but I'm talking about this group that makes 50m and all of them are more likely to lay eggs and doing it at the same time than all be clicking.

He won’t stay for 15. He’ll get 18 whether it’s from us or someone else. Near Van Vleet money. Kidd needs to get him in the starting lineup with KP at Center and two defenders (DFS and Bullock or Green) surrounding them.

Bullock I'm willing to wait on. He reminds me of Crowder who was absolutely garbage for the Suns until the end of the season.

THJ? He seems like Randle: got paid and now he's awful. Earned his money and he's out

Also our star player Luka is 422nd in +/- out of 481 players at -4.0

The only players lower are from the Pelicans, Grizzlies, Magic, Kings, Thunder, Pistons, and Wizard.

I think Bullock will get better. I’ve never seen a player have so many 3s halfway down spin out. He has no arc on his shot at all. Happens to KP quite a bit too and he also shoots a line drive a lot of the time. I’ve liked our defense with Bullock starting.

THJ’s attitude seems worse to me. From the jump, but especially since going to the bench. He’s by all accounts a hard worker, so holding out hope he’s just in a bad stretch, but this is following a pattern for him. Showed out, got paid, shit the bed.

Brunson is a better pure point guard than Brogdon or Levert, as the latter two are more SG in nature. Brogdon does do most of the facilitating for them, but would look much better as the 2nd guy to do so with a true PG next to him.

I have no faith in Bullock because at best he just hits a few more shots. But he isn't taking many shots so meh. He can't dribble for shit and doesn't pass or create.

Saying THJ EARNED his contract is mighty lenient. He was gifted a raise because our FO is inept. He's trying but he's the same player he has been for a few years here. Can't create, pass, dribble or defend.

Honestly if he makes “a few shots” and continues to be a good defender, then I am 100% happy with him. We win 5-10 more games a year which is the difference between 9th and 5th.

Don’t know why anyone would want more from an MLE guy
