Default "Dirk signs extension...done deal"--Fish

"Dirk signs extension...done deal"--Fish (Mike Fisher) posting on the LMF message board an hour ago.

From the dallasbasketball.com messageboard:

The Dallas Mavericks announced today that Mavericks have signed forward Dirk Nowitzki to a contract extension. Per team policy, terms of the deal were undisclosed.
“We are glad to keep Dirk in the Mavericks family for many more years,” said owner Mark Cuban. “His contribution to our success on and off the court has been immeasurable.”
Last season, Nowitzki averaged a career-high 26.6 points a game (which ranked seventh in the NBA), and registered 9.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.02 blocks in 38.1 minutes per contest. Nowitzki posted career-highs in field goal percentage (48.0%), 3-point percentage (40.6%) and free throw percentage (90.1%). He finished third in MVP voting and was named to the All-NBA First Team for the second straight season. Over the last six seasons, he joins Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal and Tim Duncan as the only players to be named to an All-NBA Team each year.
Also in 2005-06, he became the third player to average at least 26.0 points while shooting 90.0% or better from the line (Rick Barry and Larry Bird).
Nowitzki has career averages of 22.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.01 steals and 1.1 blocks in 36.6 minutes in 603 games over eight seasons. He has appeared in a team-record five straight All-Star Games and is the Mavericks all-time leader in rebounds and is currently third in scoring.
He has also appeared in 76 postseason games and has averages of 25.7 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.29 steals and 1.03 blocks in 42.4 minutes. Currently, he is the Mavericks postseason leader in scoring, rebounding and games played.
The Wurzburg , Germany native was selected as the ninth overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft. His draft rights were traded along with the draft rights to Pat Garrity to Dallas for the draft rights of Robert Traylor on June 24, 1998. The Mavericks re-signed him to a six-year deal on October 22, 2001.

Excellent.

Mavs sign Nowitzki to three-year, $60M extension
ESPN

Looking to build on a 60-win season that ended two games shy of an NBA Championship, the Dallas Mavericks signed All-Star forward Dirk Nowitzki to a contract extension, the team announced Tuesday.

While the team did not disclose terms of the deal, ESPN.com's Marc Stein reports that it is a three-year extension worth just under $60 million.

"We are glad to keep Dirk in the Mavericks family for many more years," Mavs owner Mark Cuban said. "His contribution to our success on and off the court has been immeasurable."

Last season, Nowitzki averaged a career-high 26.6 points per game, along with 9.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists. He also established career highs in field goal percentage (48.0), 3-point percentage (40.6) and free throw percentage (90.1).

Nowitzki finished third in MVP voting and was named to the All-NBA First Team for the second straight season. He has also been selected to a Mavericks-record five straight All-Star Games.

Wait, I thought that Dirk didn't like the way the franchise was going? Ha, whatever. Good deal and I'm glad to get it done and not have it hanging over the team's head going into next season.

If it was, I second that.

Meh, we play defense and get to the finals now. Its all hindsight but you can't argue with our success and to be honest lots of writers and friends were convinced he wouldn't be back. With that said....

I am glad Cubes just forked up the dough and got it done, no questions asked. The greatest european basketball player ever has no price.

Mavs extend Nowitzki through 2010-11

By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News

Dirk Nowitzki's hectic off-season ended with a bang when he signed a three-year contract extension Tuesday.

The nearly $60 million extension, which was agreed to in principle shortly after the NBA Finals, was signed by all parties, owner Mark Cuban said. The agreement will kick in for the 2008-09 season and ensures that the 7-foot star remains with the Mavericks until 2011, when he will be 33 and have completed 13 seasons.

"We are glad to keep Dirk in the Mavericks family for many more years," Cuban said. "His contribution to our success on and off the court has been immeasurable."

The extension is believed to be worth $59.38 million, based on the maximum 10.5 percent raise per year Nowitzki is allowed after his current contract's final season. That will be worth $16.360 million in 2007-08.

Nowitzki has been playing under a contract he signed in 2001 that was worth roughly $80 million over six years.

Nowitzki is scheduled to arrive from his home in Wurzburg, Germany, on Friday. The Mavericks begin two-a-day practices Tuesday in Denton.

Shortly after the NBA Finals, Nowitzki said it was a no-brainer that he would sign the extension before training camp.

Since then, he has called out Cuban for his overexuberance during the Finals, led the German national team to a respectable showing in the world championships and, now, signed one of the off-season's richest contract extensions – a clear sign that the Mavericks are confident Nowitzki can be the cornerstone of a title team.

Nowitzki has established himself as one of the top players in the league. He averaged 26.6 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists last season and is working on a string of six consecutive seasons of averaging at least 21 points.

In the playoffs, he averaged 27 points, 11.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists.

Nowitzki's deal puts him in elite company. The highest-paid players for this season are Minnesota's Kevin Garnett ($21 million), Philadelphia's Chris Webber ($20.7 million), San Antonio's Michael Finley ($20.2 million from San Antonio and Dallas) and Miami's Shaquille O'Neal ($20 million).

Nowitzki's extension means the Mavericks have only one nagging contract issue in front of them. Josh Howard is entering the final season of his rookie contract and has until late October to get an extension in place. If there is no deal by then, he would become a restricted free agent next summer. The Mavericks would have the right to match any offer he is given by another team.

Even if the Mavericks don't re-sign Howard, they have said repeatedly they intend to lock him up long term next summer at the latest.

Same here man, I hate thinking about it too. Even with the success of our current team, losing Nashty just sucked

So do we get to keep him till 2011 right? Excellent! Kinda large sum of dough for a three year extension. But I think it's damn as hell worth it.

Nowitzki has been playing under a contract he signed in 2001 that was worth roughly $80 million over six years.

We have Dirk locked up through his prime & JET looks like he'll be sticking around for a few years too - I have a feeling that this season might be a test for Josh Howard, but it looks like Cuban is really trying to put together a team of long-term winners... The focus is a championship, but in the hopes of a dynasty...

I think we're still paying Finley for another season...

I think, he has two more years to go: 06-07 and 07-08.

What a day for Dallas Sports. The Mavs gain from re-signing Dirk and the Cowboys suffer from the loss of TO's mind!
