I think Collisons pressure was actually bothering our guards and RC wanted another ball handler out there. Calderon sure has his limitations for a starting point in this league getting paid 7 million per

True. Two of the biggest floppers in the league in Paul and Griffin and such a whiny b*tch as the coach. Perfect fit. You could add Matt Barnes as a pure and one of the most punchable faces in the league and you have a team which is easy to hate.

The other thing that bothers me is Jordan hanging on the rim after every dunk. I hope I don't sound like and old coot Andy Rooney saying that but it's gotten absurd. It's part of why teams want to throw elbows at these clowns. They're like those parents who think every scribble that little Billy does is Rembrandt level genius. You are really tall, you can jump high. You look so cool dunking. We get it. You'd think the novelty would wear off at some point

Sometimes, the simplest messages have the biggest impact.

In the Mavericks’ locker room, the board where pre-game instructions are printed by the coaches was a strong message in capital letters.

“I WILL COMMUNICATE AND GUARD MY ASS OFF.”

Assistant coach Monte Mathis, in charge of the Mavericks’ defense, had put the message on the board.

Then every Maverick signed it.

And so, the message was delivered and received as the Mavericks executed well at both ends of the court in the middle of the fourth quarter to open up a 12-point lead, then held on for a 113-107 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers in a game that ended early Friday morning.

It was a show of force against a team that the Mavericks had lost two three times this season, each time losing leads in the second half and twice in the fourth quarter.

“Coaches, players, Cubes (owner Mark Cuban), everybody,” said Devin Harris of who signed the board. “Monte came in and started writing that down with our normal pre-game stuff.”

Added Jae Crowder: “It was simple and effective. You can use it as a joke, but we just need all guys in. It was helpful.”

The Mavericks held one of the NBA’s best offensive teams to 42.9-percent shooting and they outrebounded the Clippers. Those two achievements made a huge difference.

And so did the bench, led by Harris, Crowder, Vince Carter and Brandan Wright, who were on the floor when the Mavericks scored 10 consecutive points to open up a 99-89 lead.

“Great win,” coach Rick Carlisle said. “I’m not really looking at the standings, I just know they’re all important for us. The guys showed a lot of character.

“The team (out there) got us some separation which gave us a chance to close the game out and we held on, so it was great.”

It was the show of force that will give the Mavericks a shot of confidence going into the rest of the four-game trip.

“We needed it,” Crowder said. “They didn’t make it easy. They made us work for it. I think it will help us through the whole road trip.”

The win, coupled with events of Wednesday night when Memphis and Phoenix lost, kept the Mavericks in seventh place in the Western Conference playoff race.

“I’ve never questioned their fortitude all year long,” Carlisle said. “Sometimes, I question our decision-making and things like that. But guys all have good hearts and they’ve been battling their butts off all year. So a win like this is meaningful.”

Dirk Nowitzki had a huge night with 26 points and 11 rebounds, but it was the Mavericks’ bench that supplied plenty of production in the middle of the fourth quarter when they took charge.

It was a sensational start to a four-game trip after what had been a completely disappointing 4-4 homestand.

The Mavericks held strong at the end, even though they lost almost all of a 12-point lead in the final 2:50. The Clippers scored 10 points in a row to draw within 109-107. But Nowitzki hit two free throws with 17.9 seconds left.

The Clippers couldn’t create any more magic in the final seconds.

The Clippers had not lost at Staples Center since the first game after the All-Star break, having won eight in a row at home.

The Mavericks put themselves in great position when they scored 10 consecutive points, six on Nowitzki 3-pointers, to go ahead 99-89 with 6:37 left.

They were getting nice bumps off the bench from Vince Carter, Harris, Brandan Wright and Crowder.

Unlike many of their recent losses, the Mavericks spent the rest of the game making key play after key play.

Good win, but the Mavs nearly blew that game down the stretch. Something, I noticed was that after Collison scored his last 2 points he was screaming in Rick's direction. I think DC is probably still angry about how things went down last season. Unlike Mayo, Collison always played hard for us until the end, but it seems like he got blamed for everything. Hey man, I like Calderon well enough. Just stating things how I see them. The better teams in the league have gotten the scouting report on him and he is clearly bothered by pressure with a quicker defender on him. It's especially clear late in tight games. Calderon's a good player and has hit some clutch baskets over these last weeks. Doesn't mean he is w/out flaws.

I picked up on him hanging on the rim too. At no point did he have a reason to hang on it. And I was wondering if they would call a tech or not. I hate clippers so much

There is basically nothing he does pretty well. I dont Think Iv ever seen a player with as many strengths and weaknesses that are both so clearly defined. He's either amazing or awful at everything.

Seeing him game in game out his susceptibility to pressure is what's been most surprising to me. He also has trouble getting Dirk the ball on the block in his spots consistently although it has improved with reps. His shot selection is outstanding. Love having 3 super efficient guys like Dirk, Calderon and Wright who almost never take bad shots

I'm sure come playoff time(assuming we're in)this and his other flaws will be exposed by savvy scouting. I wouldn't mind seeing both Calderon and Ellis back next year for continuity's sake but it would necessitate the acquisition of a legit 3&D two-guard

Small quibble with this, dirk takes terrible shots almost exclusively. He's just so good they are still good shots for him

I would think any player in his position would want to beat his former team after the way things went down. He was asked to do too much and then blamed when he didn't reach it. He's a great complementary player. He gets looks he's never gotten because of the players on his team

Let's see, things that Calderon makes well, Excellent 3 points shooter, 1º last year 3rd at the moment, He has hold the record for most consecutive free throws made, He had the best assist/to ratio of the NBA for 3 or 4 years in a row, he' an excellent passer, and has an amazing view of the game, great team mate and always a posiitive minded person. He has made history with the toronto raptors, with Tau Ceramica and with Spain. the only bad things he have, is that he isn't neither Black, American or your Beloved Dirk.
