Let's see.... 4 friends of mine got fired from 3 different companies within the last two months. Let's see. Two of them were not that funny, but the other two.

The other two worked at an arcade........ come to think of it they might get into even more trouble of I tell this story..... I better not.

I haven't been fired. I've had to fire people before.

That is NO fun. Not matter how much you want to get rid fom someone, if you know their financial situation or their family or whatever....nasty business..

I've done both, fired people and been fired.

- Firing someone sucks! No two ways about it. The times I've done it was when there was a larger action so it wasn't that someone was messing off, but that they were low man on the totem pole. Possibly were working on something that wasn't making dollars (through no fault of their own).

- Getting fired is worse, much worse personally. In my case I was given 30 days to find another position or get out. I called myself "dead man walking". Funny looking back on it. It's an extremely stressful period.

Some advice/comments.
- Networking is the only way to find a new position that is almost guaraneteed to work. Find some information on networking with a purpose. Go find the position you really want and begin networking into the decision makers. Your enthusiasm for that position will show, not just "looking for a job".

Hiring managers are looking for someone who will make their job easier and in the end make the company and by association themselves more dollars.

Make sure that you get your resume in order, send it to some folks(peers) who you respect to give you an honest opinion of it. If you can get someone in the organization who knows the hiring manager and will give you tips on tailoring your resume and the focus of the interview that is great.

With respect to the interview, again if you've looked for something you really want, your enthusiasm will come through. Think through the questions they will ask you before you get there. Especially think of answers to hard questions they might ask. Like why the hell did you get fired from your last job dude! If you are so great why did they let you go. Things like that.

But the bottom line I thought was networking often and with a purpose. In my own personal experience I choose about 3 jobs I wanted and worked those exclusively for the month I had.

Also at the end of the day the job I got was much better, more profitable and much more rewarding than I had.

Luck to any and all who go through this.

Fired, laid off, booted, canned, let go, sacked etc. However you call it, it's one of the nastiest and sickest feelings one can get in a lifetime.

I was given the heave-ho from the previous company I worked for because my supervisor didn't think that I was "well rounded" enough to have around. Five years of hard work with the goddam company and I was told that I wasn't good enough. Let me tell you, that seriously messed me up for the next couple of months. I was depressed and doubting my self-worth and all that crap. If it wasn't because of the emotional support my wife gave me, god knows how far the deep end I would've gone.

Fortunately, it didn't take me very long to find another job, which I have to add, I enjoy working at and pays much better than my previous job. Now that everything is behind me, I can say that everything works out alright. But during the time I was unemployed I was miserable and depressed. And I think it will remain as a significant period of my life. At least it taught me the lesson that no job is secured.

Oh one more thing about networking tactics. My tact was to always call up someone and hopefully say so and so gave me your name and I would like to talk to you about your business.

At the end of the conversation NEVER forget to get a few more folks whom you can contact later. I always asked for three but usually got less. Ask them for as much of an organization chart as you can get to know who to follow up.

The point of pointed networking is to get many, many more folks to know you are looking so that possibly in passing they hear of a job that you would be perfect for, there is one out there. It greatly increases the folks looking for you.

I was laid off about 2 months ago, but overall it wasn't the bad. I mean i get paid less now, and had to make adjustments, but shit happens, and I've been through worse. Jobs are jobs, money is money. But I saw a lot of people that didn't know how to handle it.

But the best thing is a group of guys got busted looking at porn on the bosses Computer. They actually had a little investigation and everything to try and get the guys fired, one or two more days before it was going to happen. But the Boss(who wasn't getting laid off) actually stood up for the guys, and made it go away. Saved them some $ (severence)

Let's see.. I've been laid off.. 4 times. Well, I'm not sure what you'd call it exactly. Twice I refused transfer when a project had ended in the DFW area.. once to Amarillo and once to Sulphur, Louisiana.

And, twice I worked for companies that were purchased by larger companies and my office was shut down. The most recent occasion (5 years ago), I had the opportunity to transfer to Ohio to the company's headquarters.. but, again, I don't plan on leaving the DFW area.
