socialists, democrats, and college professors... OH MY! Sounds like something out of the Wizard of Oz.

Also, I live in California and if that thing ever came to pass, I might have to leave this kick ass state.

That's not socialist. It's preserving the "free market" we have. But if it really is socialist, then I might have some other questions.

How socialist is doubling the size of the departement of education?

How socialist is assuming that free markets are more efficient if there is a central planning bank which determines for the not so free individuals in the market the interest rates of the day?

How socialist is increased agricultural subsidies?

How socialist is 200 billion Kathrina reconstruction?

Here’s the chairman of the American Conservative Union: “Excluding military and homeland security, American taxpayers have witnessed the largest spending increase under any preceding president and Congress since the Great Depression.” That would be correct. When you have doubled spending on education in four years, launched two wars and a new mega-entitlement, that tends to happen.

Here’s Peggy Noonan, about as loyal a Republican as you’ll find, in a Wall Street Journal column last week: “George W Bush is a big spender. He has never vetoed a spending bill. When Congress serves up a big slab of fat, crackling pork, Mr Bush responds with one big question: Got any barbecue sauce?”

Those things are all well and good. Taking a larger percentage of income from one group of people than from another group of people to accomplish them is the part that is socialist. It is a forced transfer of wealth.

Haha, if you think subsidies for special industries are not socialist if the taxes that are used for it will come from anyone at the same percentage, then you're already a socialist.

Taking money from citizens (no matter how you collect the taxes) and spending it on special interest groups is a transfer of wealth, as well.

Printing money in order to finance the debt is also a transfer of wealth (this time from the poor and the middle class to the contractors, etc.).

Taking money from citizens and giving it to military contractors is also a transfer of wealth. The transfer of wealth doesn't stop to exist if you mess with the tax code.
