Default T-Mac leaves game on stretcher

HOUSTON -- Houston star Tracy McGrady left Sunday night's game against Denver with a recurrence of severe back spasms.

The 6-foot-9 McGrady, who missed eight games earlier in the season because of back spasms, missed a deep jumper near the top of the key in the final seconds of the first half. He started backpedalling, stopped abruptly, bent over and crumpled to the floor, screaming in pain as the buzzer sounded.

McGrady was lifted onto a stretcher and rolled off the floor, surrounded by several team officials and owner Les Alexander. An ambulance took McGrady to the hospital.

The Rockets are already missing their other star, Yao Ming, who's out at least another month after surgery to remove an infection from his left big toe.

Guards Rafer Alston and Jon Barry recently returned from leg injuries and Derek Anderson remains sidelined with a calf strain. The backcourt trio has missed a total of 45 games this season.

McGrady had topped 30 points in Houston's last five games. He had 11 points on 5-for-14 shooting in the first half against Denver.

McGrady aggravated back Sunday against Portland

Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS -- Back problems have sidelined Houston Rockets star Tracy McGrady again.

McGrady was scratched from the lineup Tuesday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves after aggravating his back problems against Portland on Sunday night.

McGrady left in the third quarter due to recurring problems with his back and did not return. McGrady, who had 18 points before leaving with 1:29 remaining in the third.

He was listed as a game-time decision Tuesday, but Keith Bogans started in his place.

The Rockets are 2-13 without McGrady, who is averaging 24.6 points, in the lineup.

How does someone so young and so athletic have such bad back problems?

Fortunately for T-Mac, Houston won't make the playoffs. He needs to take the entire summer off and see if he can't recover. Back injuries are scary, could ruin his career if he's not careful.

In my opinion he is done. He'll continue to be a talent but a team will never be able to count on him being there. It's a shame, but that's my feelings about it.

Chronic back injuries are exacerbated by continuous physical exertion. He probably injured it in the past and failed to take the proper amount of time to heal. Once that trend starts it is a slippery slope to recovery. He may be at a point where his back will never heal properly.

T-Mac is a top five talent when he is healthy. The problem is he is hardly ever healthy. Yao has been a beast since the break. If Yao finally figured it out. Houston is a dangerous team next season. The Rockets still need a point and an athletic three to go with Yao and McGrady.

Why an athletic three? Why not use McGrady as the athletic three, and get a pure shooter for the SG. Then you can play the inside/out with Yao/SG with a pentrating/defensive PG, and use McGrady offside for cutting/slashing. Then Swift becomes a useful offside pick/inside finisher. You could also utilize Yao in the high/low game with his skills with the SG spotted up, and Swift/McGrady cutting/slashing.

IMO, they need a defensive minded PG who can penetrate, and a defensive minded SG who can shoot the three efficiently. Of course depth at all the positions would be nice as well.

Grant Hill's ankle.

T-Mac's back?

Man, what should've been a slam dunk for Orlando turned into an airball.

Good post, what Houston needs is a PG with footspeed and lateral quickness who can also take some of the rock-handling pressure off of T-Mac (Rafer was supposed to fit that mold but his injury has made it difficult to gauge his effectiveness, though his ability to create has been disappointing thus far). The Rockets would be absolutely disgusting if they could find themselves a spot-up shooter, a la Redd, Allen (pipe-dream I know) - with Yao commanding double-teams in the post and a shooter just hanging around the perimeter, T-Mac would have all the room he needed to just be T-Mac. Swift has been a big disappointment, hopefully he will pick it up - one of the knocks against him is he's too skinny to be effective at the PF so he needs to pack on some weight, help take some of the post-defense pressure off of Yao and be able to bang around and grab 9-10 rebounds a night. Yao's taken huge strides in that direction but think how much easier Shaq's job would have been had he had the luxury of a Carlos Boozer/(insert banger here)-like player alongside him his whole career (instead of...Medvedenko?).

Wow..pretty bad huh. But they had a shaq and let him go, tough.

Mavs had the bad luck to come into the league after the rockets fixed the game so that we our putrid record didn't get us the number 1 pick.

Orange, I wouldn't count on Swift picking it up. He's just not that good. Personally, I think they need a passer in the high post at the 4 position. Webber, Walker, or Odom would all be perfect for them. Hell, I think Brad Miller would even be a good fit for them. As for their backcourt, I think Dalm hit the nail on the head about a defensive minded PG. Someone like Tinsley. As for the 2, I tend to agree that they need a shooter. Actually, I think every team should have a good spot up shooter in their starting lineup.

Haha, yeah...Swift does kinda suck. But I'm not willing to give up on him yet, though I believe that any success he enjoys will have to follow the ousting of Van Gundy.

Claxton
Allen
McGrady
Odom
Yao

That line-up is so sick I could vomit. *stops dreaming*
