Spurs sign guards Anthony Carter, Devin Brown

July 30, 2003

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- The San Antonio Spurs signed free-agent guards Anthony Carter and Devin Brown on Wednesday.

Carter spent his four-year career in Miami, averaging 4.1 points and 4.1 assists in 49 games last season. He became a free agent when his representatives mistakenly failed to exercise a player option that would have allowed him to make $4.1 million with the Heat next season.

In San Antonio, Carter is expected to replace Speedy Claxton as Tony Parker's backup at point guard. Claxton signed a free-agent deal with Golden State.

``Anthony Carter is a proven NBA player who has experience as both a starter and a reserve,'' Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said. ``He is a good defensive player and will fit well into our system.''

Brown, a former standout at Texas-San Antonio, played briefly with the Spurs last season. He averaged 1.7 points and 1.0 rebounds in seven games.

Afterward, he joined Fayetteville in the National Basketball Development League, finishing as the league's MVP and Rookie of the Year after averaging 16.9 points.

He later averaged 6.0 points and 3.6 rebounds in three games with Denver following the NBDL season.

I wonder how much of a settlement he'll get from his agent?

wonder what he signed for? His agent (Duffy) should fill in the difference.

He's not as good as Claxton, but he'll be a solid backup behind Parker.

How do you average more assists then points? He looks like he can dish the ball just his scoring isn't too good. A nice Spurs signing though. It beats them getting Jermaine or Kidd or getting a star. They are just grabbing role players which i'm not mad at.

It's hard to find a worse point guard than Speedy Claxton. I think the Spurs may have just accomplished that.

I guess once Kerr decided to send the Mavs on vacation you guys stopped watching. Anyways, if It wasn't for Speedy, the finals might have gone 7 games, and you never know what could have happen. He was a SOLID backup for Parker, and at times, it looked like Parker was the backup. The only problem with Speedy is that he is injury prone. You are right when you say that the Spurs were able to find a worse point guard than Speedy.
