Boy, was Benga looking good early, or what?
The Mavs are kicking the crap out of the Bucks!
Hard to believe it's basketball season again. Good to see Dirk out there to start the game.
With the lineup we have in now, I so fondly remember the Mavs of the 90's. Good times, good memories.

So who thought that ferocious block by DJ was in fact a legitimate block? It sure looked good to me!

I see that the return to the hardwood of Nowitzki and Harris didn't inspire a lot of enthusiasm in the d-m.com faithful.
D2K, George has always looked heavy to me. You mean moreso than usual?

Laura Green is AWFUL. She can't complete a freaking thought and should be put out to pasture with all women commentators. She is a sideline reporter...keep her there so she can read a freaking cue card and not try to comment on the game.

the mavs look really sharp out there. its like mid-season play already. either that, or they are just in a completely different class than the bucks.

Is this Laura Green thing a pre-season experiment or do we have to put up with here all year? She brings nothing to the broadcast.

How does Harris look, is he looking healthy? How's the jumper?
How's Dirk looking, any hook shots or any new parts of his game that were displayed in this game?
And how did the 3 guys vying for the 15th spot look?

I sense a pattern here....

MVP...MVP...MVP....
I think that may be what I'm sensing.....

Awesome. I got him in the last round of my fantasy league as well, which makes it twice as good
I'm expecting and hoping for a big year outta him.

i was flipping around channels bc i was watching..."the office", "grey's anatomy" etc...
but...from what i saw
-devin's shooting touch looks better! because he hit 4-4 free throws! i hope he really worked on that this summer because i think with him driving in the lane...he'll go to the line alot
-buckner is doing what i thought he would do. take good shots. play tough D. be another glue man. he had a good game today
-jho, dirk ... same old same old
-croshere...i DO NOT like the turn around fade aways he keep taking. if you cant hit your open shots..why are you taking those. play your game please. dont try to do too much.
-players vying for 15th spot...didnt get much PT. i think Avery wanted to win this game badly.

Harris started out a bit tentative but in the 3rd quarter he was looking awesome as ever... getting to the basket for easy layups off his right and left hand with reckless abandon... made a nice drive, stop & shoot 18-footer... got a steal or two... directed traffic well and overall looked lively and pretty close to 100%!
Dirk looked great... especially his passes were crisp as hell... he seemed to be consciously waiting for double-teams and passing to open 3s (once each for Buck & Howard). I've seen him make other nice passes to Cro, DJ and Diop as well, although some weren't finished as well. He seemed to struggle a bit with the new ball (he missed an easy layup after an offensive rebound!).
Josh looked like he's ready for the playoffs. He was easily the best player on the floor (not named Dirk, of course!). He was moving great without the ball, attacking the basket when he can and taking & making the open jumpers with ease. I saw him set up his teammates (as part of his evolution as a point-forward, I hope!) for open jumpers.
Buck seemed to be hitting all his open shots and even Devean, AJ and to some extent Cro were all looking much better than earlier games. I guess, when you have Dirk on the floor, it's just an easy game for everyone else!!
Rookie spares were again totally unimpressive (except for JJB on a couple of passes!). DJ & Diop played great defense and rebounded quite well although DJ seemed a bit overexuberant on his shot selection. He did attempt a couple of nice Hakeem-esque moves down low!
Team looked great overall and Nov 2 just can't come soon enough for me!

I was there tonight with some buddies.
Let me tell you, this offense is completely different when Devin is running it than when AJ is running it. Devin brings so much more to the table.
Croshere...wow. I'm a big fan, so I'm sticking with him, but he's going to put himself squarely in the doghouse with those kinds of performances.
DJ and Diop were trying to do way too much on defense. I assume this is just Avery trying new things in the preseason, because it didn't work too well.
At this point, I would consider JJB a lock to make the team.
Oh, and Buck, Buck looked great. He's going to add a new dimension to this team over what Griff brought.

I was once like you, Dan, and thought that fantasty football/baseball/basketball was for crap. Then I started playing it, and I realized how much it adds to your knowledge of the game. I can pretty much tell you what every NFL team is doing on offense, how they are deploying their players, who is doing well and not so well, etc. I don't think there's any question that if you aren't playing fantasy football, I know far more about the league as a whole than you do. No question.
Fantasy makes for better, more knowledgeable fans. Now, I haven't got into it with basketball, mainly because I don't think basketball sets up as well for fantasy as the other sports do. But I'm still interested in the discussion.
So I would suggest that you get past your mental roadblock and give it a try. You will be a lot more knowledgeable after you do.

I was at the game tonight and noticed the following:
1. Austin Croshere is slow and his lumbering play made Josh look like a mongoose when collecting rebounds/scrambling. Keith Van Horn played better than croshere did tonight.
2. Devin Harris was great, the offense felt like it did against the Spurs and he was keeping the frantic pace which is good for him and the starters (jho, dirk)
3. Barae missed his shots but other than that he had a sweet pass to DJ where he literally was like "WTF, a Basketball is in my hands... I BETTER DO SOMTHIN!" haha, was funny. But Barae's handling skills are impressive.
4. Popsu was very active and had a pretty good basket when he was put in the 4th qtr garbage time... He had a bad turnover with barae that sucked but other than that... decent.
5. Ebi... a good basket... then not noticable at all really... he was cut from minnesota, that always comes to my mind.
6. Devean George played like a NBA veteren, good shots, decent defense and play. I like him on our bench.
7. I miss Terry...

Lot of negative comments about Cro thus far this preseason. Let me hasten to remind you that Van Horn, for all his struggles, was a flat freakin' warrior on defense. I maintain my stance that he was our most intelligent defender last year. He always knew where to be and what to do. His rotations were the best on the team. Now, he was often asked to cover guys who were his physical superior, but the man could play that side of the court.

Did you watch the same game I did? He is a horrible defender. So poor in help defense and was slow to react to a shooter. Croshere might not be much on offense but he is far superior to Van Horn on defense.

Cro has a long, long way to go before he rivals Van Horn on defense.

Mavs are back into the swing of things
02:01 AM CDT on Friday, October 20, 2006
By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News
Dirk Nowitzki pumped a little life into the Mavericks with his first action of the preseason, but he didn't do it by scoring.
Coach Avery Johnson said he wanted to see Nowitzki's production in other areas and he wasn't disappointed when the 7-footer had three offensive rebounds and four assists in 22 minutes in his first action of the preseason.
That he and his teammates walloped Milwaukee, 88-71, for the Mavericks' first win after four losses was a bonus.
It all went to show that Nowitzki's return helps make the Mavericks look a little more normal, even if he hasn't played in game action since an intrasquad game two weeks ago.
"Dirk does enough to help all of us," said Greg Buckner, who had 19 points. "I'm not sure we need game action to get ready for the regular season. I think 82 games in the regular season is enough time to jell for the playoffs."
True, but it's never too early to see Nowitzki on the court and the Mavericks putting on a stout defensive effort.
"Sitting out is obviously weird for me," Nowitzki said. "I tried to keep in shape while I was sitting out. I've been out almost two weeks, so it's good to get back."
Johnson saw exactly what he wanted to see out of Nowitzki.
"There are a few things we're having him concentrate on in the preseason," Johnson said. "We've been very specific. If he makes a few shots, great. But there are other things we'd like to see out of him."
Defense comes alive: During the third quarter, the visitors should have been called the Milwaukee Bricks, not the Bucks.
The Mavericks took control of the game by holding Milwaukee to four points on 2-of-21 shooting in the third quarter.
"Anytime you hold a team to four points – I know it wasn't all our defense – but I liked the effort," Johnson said. "We weren't perfect. We got a lot of things to work on. I wasn't giving out any game balls in the locker room."
But four points is four points, even if it's preseason.
Looking ahead: The Mavericks expect to sprinkle in the rest of their injured players in the final three exhibitions, starting perhaps with Erick Dampier on Saturday against Washington.
Jason Terry also could play Saturday, and Jerry Stackhouse should join a full squad Wednesday in Pittsburgh vs. Cleveland.
Contract fallout: Mark Cuban was asked if coming to terms on Josh Howard's contract was a sign that he is softening on his belief that employees always work better with a financial carrot dangling in front of them.
In the past, Cuban operated when possible under the philosophy that players or coaches in the last year of a contract are more driven.
"There's plenty of incentives when you work for me," he said. "Either you live up to your deal, or you're in Eastern Slobovia. Guys know that I'm going to do everything I can to put them in a position to succeed. I'll reward them. I expect them to reward me with hard work and getting the job done."
Technically speaking: The Mavericks got their first technical foul of the preseason.
Austin Croshere was coming into the game with 4:34 left in the first quarter and took his warm-up shirt off after he'd been waved into the game. Referee Sean Corbin wasted no time doling out a technical.
Howard also got a technical for jawing with the refs.

Now, he was often asked to cover guys who were his physical superior, but the man could play that side of the court.

This is truly amazing. I think it's a bit, and I applaud you, because it's a funny bit.
