Panic! I'm hoping for Doncic still but braced for J3

The more I think about it, the more I realize that JJJ's floor is Dwight Powell with a three shot and excellent shot blocking. Can you imagine what Powell would be with those two attributes?
I'm slowly inching towards him. Being able to guard perimeter players as a big man is paramount.

He has all of the physical attributes to be a star imo. Only question is BBIQ and drive.

Jackson won't even turn 19 until September.
He's crazy young. That gives you time to develop him, but man, he's raw. We'd be babysitting an 18-year old for a few months. Might be a good matchup with 20-year-old Smith, though.

Yep, the first season of JJJ won't be stellar, but does it need to be when you got Smith to keep people entertained?
I feel that so much of this draft depends on how good they think DSJ will be.

I honestly don't think they can go wrong with JJJ.
He is a much more skilled version of Powell and should at minimum be a solid starter in the league.
Although he is young I could see him taking the starting role that Powell has/had.
DSJ/Wes/Barnes/JJJ/Dirk
Solid fit with a great veteran supporting cast to help him develop.

I doubt Jackson Jr is there. I think he's pegged at 3. We're going to be choosing between Bamba and Porter Jr imo.

I don't think "fuck the floor" is really a smart way to look at it. What we should do is focus on what the floor is. JJJ's floor actually isn't that bad. Neither is Bamba's.
Could they be total busts? Yeah, but that would be highly unlikely.

Yeah but both of those guys have a high ceiling, in fact they prolly have the 2 highest ceilings in this draft and their floor is quality starter imo. I think the issue would come with drafting one of those other guys, like Carter and Bridges. I'll give anyone we draft a chance but I'm not gonna be in love with picking either of those guys at 5.

I agree. But it sounds like the Mavs are more about this-

First round is contentious but I really like Mo Wagner at 33 and not just because he loves Dirk
Love a quiet, smart player who you can lose track of and he ends up going for 24-15. Plays hard. Can hit threes and clean up the glass. Helped his team to the championship game.

Love Wagner. I have a feeling he sneaks into late 1st round when it's all said and done.
Shake Milton, Jarred Vanderbilt, Brandon McCoy, and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk are intriguing in the 2nd.

Shake Milton reminds me of Shaun Livingston. 6'6'' long and athletic. I could see him next to DSJ for some additional ball handling and creation.
I personally would prefer Mykhailiuk over Divencenzo. He would be a great grab if he made it to our pick.

The Memphis trade has been rumored there for a while now. It's intriguing because we could just eat up Parson's contract (he wouldn't likely actually play for us), but there are limited scenarios in which picking #4 and #5 makes sense. Either Doncic is available so you can pick him and a big or Mikal rises as so much that you don't have to feel bad of picking him that high and go with Mikal and a big.

Actually, there never was a Memphis rumor -- it was just a random scenario that Skin came up with a couple months ago. He was reading the tea leaves, trying to find a way for the Mavs to get a second high pick... And now here we are with Memphis offering exactly what he hoped for; a package of Parsons/#4 to the highest bidder.
And I can make an argument for almost any combination of Doncic/Bagley/JJJ/Bamba, especially since Jaren Jackson Jr. can play either the 4 or the 5 (seriously, a JJJ/Bamba combo would be ridiculous on defense)... But it doesn't even matter what you think about those combos when we can always just grab whoever we want at #4 and flip #5 for something else (like, we could trade down to get Mikal or Carter and come away with another pick/player). It's all about assets.

Ah thanks. I wasn't actually sure where I had heard that before, only that Memphis trade sounded "familiar".

And the only person saying we are open to taking on salary for a top 10 pick is good ole Mike Fisher. And even he says the Mavs won't include Barnes so it's pretty much a non-story at least with regards to Memphis.
Now, that doesn't mean there aren't other teams, like the Sixers, where something could happen.

Barnes + next year's 1st for Parsons and #4 is a perfect scenario for both teams imo. You can top 10 protect it for next year.
Memphis would be right where they need to be next year and still have great building blocks for the future.
If Cuban and Donnie aren't salivating at the potential of this, I'm done. This is NOT that hard.

And you can tell Barnes "sorry bro, but remember we have cap space in 2019 and when you decline your PO with Memphis...cough cough"

All that matters is that Memphis is willing to trade -- anything Mike Fisher says is immaterial.

True, but I don't see it happening unless Barnes is included. Hopefully the Mavs come to their senses and add him at the finish line.
Barnes is a good trooper through these hard times, but a decent player on a terrible team doesn't hold a ton of value.

Absolutely, and I'd trade Barnes for Parsons/#4 in a heartbeat... Love HB, but he'd be a better fit with Memphis while the #4 pick would be a better fit for our future plans. I think this could be a win-win, depending on what other moving parts it would take to grease the wheels (like next year's pick or whatever). Not to mention that we could probably flip Parsons' expiring next summer, assuming he doesn't miraculously round back into form and we decide to keep him.
Like I said before, whatever Fish says is immaterial. He's always searching for an unrealistic angle to generate clicks.

At least these scenarios makes some sense. I dont think it would get done as a protected pick either way.

After the Mavs make this trade, they turn around and trade Wes +#33 to Cleveland for Thompson/Clarkson, and the #8. Mavs end up with three picks in the top ten (but take on a ton of salary).
And then I woke up...

Fish is mentioning Mathews and Powell and next year unprotected. Not sure they would be interested unless they like wes expiring

They might actually prefer that if they don't want to be locked into Barnes, but I'm doubtful.
I think the pick next year would be top 10 protected. Dunno if I'd give up an unprotected pick.

If I'm Memphis, I don't do the deal if it's Wes and powell protected. That's not enough with Gasol getting older and Wes not being near what Barnes is.
Also Mentioned was moving to 7 with Chicago giving us Kriss Dunn in that same scenario.

Love hearing these rumors of Porter going 2 and Young going 3 with us possibly in the mix for the 4 pick. We get to dream of it for a few days until none of that actually happens.

@Schultz_Report: Source familiar with Michael Porter, Jr.’s medical results today says everything was clean and that his back was better than expected. More good news for the Porter camp in Chicago. #NBADraft

Random thought... I think Zhaire Smith is going to be really good. He's a late bloomer but an absolute athletic marvel and plays really hard on both ends. He shows a lot of promise with his jumpshot and handles as well on a small sample size. Would love to somehow pick him up. Think Justin Anderson with more offensive skills.

Okay Mavs owe me an apology if they trade the #5
Got tickets to games 2 and 3 of the Vegas Summer League and I’m looking forward to seeing Smith throw lobs to our #5 pick

Rick Carlisle says he doesn’t expect Luka Doncic to play a full summer league schedule. “He needs a break” after a long season with Real Madrid. Mavs will figure out how much they want Doncic to play in Vegas.

Reading tea leaves, I'm thinking Porter, Doncic, or JJJ. All of them might be gone before 5.

Interesting article how investing a high pick into a center might not be worth it: http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/2...ly-replaceable
It's not that I had the same thoughts, but it's definitely true that drafting a center comes with more concerns than other positions.
