Gortat appears* bound for a team not named the Dallas Mavericks
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4303432
Let's hope Orlando doesn't match...by the time they did, every other nice MLE option will be gone.

That rule really needs to change. It should be like, 48 hours to match. Holding a team hostage for that long isn't right.
But is Orlando really going to pay 11mil for a backup center? (it doubles due to luxury tax) Seems like it would be a big FU to us if they did.

Maybe with this news out there now, Orlando, may come to us and asks about a sign and trade deal....we have about 6 days to hammer it out, before the NBA allows signing to start.

At least he didn't sign Houston's or San Antonio's. Gotta give it to management for at least beating them out.

That's good... I guess. Anyone else worried about the fact he hasn't done anything in this league?

Fish's 3-way trade idea to secure Gortat
It's clever, but not likely - it involves sending Bass/Stack to Orlando, Turkoglu to Toronto and we get Gortat, Reggie Evans & Patrick O’Bryant (salary dumps) while retaining our entire MLE...

While ESPN calls him a restricted free-agent, Eddie Sefko is reporting that he is unrestricted here:
http://mavsblog.dallasnews.com/archi...or-gortat.html
Is Sefko misinformed? If he is unrestricted, does that mean we've definitely got him?

Yay!!!
If we can resign Kidd (for no more than 3 year 25 mil) and get Michael Redd (or another shooter), I will be very happy.
I am not big on trading any of our core (kidd, dirk, howard, terry), and would like to keep Damp, as his trade value will go up and him and Gortat would make for a good 1-2 punch at center.
Additionally, who knows Damp might kick it up a notch since he is in a contract year,
Trade/waive Stack, George, Carroll, Green
Try to keep Singelton, Hollins, (at low salaries)
Looks like Bass will be leaving, not happy about this,
Bass was my second "home town crowd favorite" besides Barrea

Ok i'm breaking the silence cause i'm tired of the ridiculous idocy going around.
I just don't see the fascination with Gortat. He is a product of Orlando's huge success this season. Take a look at what teams are offering Ariza and Hedo (I believe it was five years and $60 million for Hedo Turkoglu to Toronto)...
He plays behind Dwight Howard which means that when he is in the game he is playing against the other teams scrub. The full MLE for a guy that put up 3pts and 4 rbs.. really? The guy hasn't proved anything worth the MLE in 2 years of playing. It's going to be Diop all over again.

It is worth noting that 24 y/o centers that have proven themselves are not had for the MLE. You have to base all of your assessments with that fact in mind.
I certainly wouldn't characterize myself as thrilled about the signing. But I'm not unhappy about it either. There is absolutely a distinct chance that this is a miserably failed signing.
However, I don't agree with comparing it to Diop. Diop had been given much more of an opportunity to establish himself when we signed him to that horrendous contract last year. His game had taken on a startling decline over the past season, and signing him was an out and out idiotic move of epic proportions.
And given all that information, we STILL found a team that would take Diop off our hands in exchange for a similarly poor (although less poor, for sure) contract.
So even if Gortat doesn't work out, it's not like he'll be a franchise killing weight around the neck of the franchise. And regardless of WHEN Damp leaves this team (and I doubt it will be this offseason) he is in the last year of his deal and we do need to find a center to replace him.
I'm fine with this move, although if I hear one more person say "he's better than Damp" I think I'll shoot myself.

Would you be happier with the move if we found a way to pull off a S&T with Orlando for Bass and Gortat? I know they can't be traded straight up, but both teams can benefit from finding a way.. We would still have the MLE, and maybe find the next missing piece to our puzzle.

RealGM has Bass's agent saying he is up to a S&T to Orlando. It is amazing that Bass would catch the interest of the Magic when we want Gortat. As I said before, both teams benefit. They would be crazy to not even try

This would be alright... if Dallas had gotten Artest or some other premiere player also.
But that's not happening and sorry, Gortat has done nothing and this is not the piece to turn the Mavs into contenders... and it doesn't look like Cuban has any interest in getting one of those players.
Fail.
Honestly I'd rather have Bass than Gortat, since it seems like a choice between the two.
The mavs dont' really gain much by losing Bass and gaining this guy. At best it's treading water.

I'm not sure we could have landed any of those big name players. How could we compete with the heavy contenders slobbering all over them? That may be why we heard nothing from Dallas about us going after any of them. With our situation we have to make solid moves to upgrade where we can. I'm actually hoping we find a S&T with Orlando for Gortat using Bass. Won't work straight up, but both teams can find a way to make it work. With our MLE saved, and our trading pieces, we can still salvage this off season.

I'm sure they'll look at it but the salary cap issues around both players makes it nearly impossible.

Actually you fail, it is the second day of free agency and there are still big names out there, rumor is we at least reached out to Ariza how serious that is is entirely different though. But there are still plenty of players available that can help the Mavs. This doesn't make Mavs title contender alone but it is a step in the right direction.

You can't really overstate this point. If Gortat is all we're getting this offseason we might as well rebuild. Especially if Artest is going to L.A. Game over.

Fish has got a decent idea in that latest article. With Dallas and Orlando as the only parties involved...it's pretty difficult. If you find a 3rd team, then it opens the door quite a bit. His plan works for all parties involved IMO. I don't know how inclined all parties would be, but I would try to find a 3rd team to play ball...preferably not Portland or another West team.

I agree that he's overrated around here, but c'mon, he is nowhere NEAR as bad as Diop.

Totally agree, but the offseason ain't over yet!
No need to lose hope until we're out of options...
(but I see where your coming from - no point in getting a "Kidd" unless there's a "Maggette" following close behind, right?)

I'm less than thrilled. I think Damp's way better, and this doesn't give us the offensive presence we'd been clamoring for all year by trying to bring over Kaman. He does have upside though, and generally NBA centers take 3 years in the league to really develop. So even though it's not captivating, I think it allows up to move Damp, and pairing that with Stack's contract might get us a legit wingman if there are any left to be had.
