The league is reviewing both players.

League reviewing Bowen-Paul play

By Johnny Ludden, Yahoo! Sports Staff

Bruce Bowen’s feet once again have caught the attention of the NBA office, a league official said Thursday.

The league is reviewing an incident between the San Antonio Spurs forward and New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul that occurred midway through the third quarter of the Hornets’ 100-75 victory on Wednesday.

After Paul lost control of his dribble and went to the floor to corral the ball, Bowen reached down to tie him up and his legs became entangled with Paul. Video replays showed Bowen trying to initially fling Paul off him, then he appeared to catch him again with his right foot as Paul tried to sit up.

Paul was whistled for a foul, but protested that Bowen had kicked him.

The league official said Paul’s actions also were being examined – he flung his arms up at Bowen – during the review of the play. An official from the NBA’s security office also has put in a call to Bowen to discuss the play – standard protocol for such incidents.

Opponents have complained on several occasions about Bowen’s aggressive defense, in particular the use of his feet. New York Knicks coach Isiah Thomas told his players last season to “break (Bowen’s) foot” when Steve Francis rolled his ankle in a previous game after landing on Bowen following a jump shot. NBA executive vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson warned Bowen about giving shooters proper landing space but did not fine him.

Bowen, who made his 500th consecutive start for the Spurs on Wednesday, has never been suspended by the league. He was fined $10,000 two seasons ago for kicking then-Seattle SuperSonics guard Ray Allen in the back.

During last season’s playoffs, Phoenix Suns forward Amare Stoudemire accused Bowen of trying to kick him in the back of the leg. Bowen received a flagrant foul in a later game for kneeing Suns point guard Steve Nash in the groin while trying to clear space.

Looking at it again, it's not as bad as I thought before. Paul does get him in the groin area, and then Bowen appears to push Paul with his foot and then step over him. I think you either suspend them both or don't suspend either. This Bowen play isn't nearly as dirty as the plays he had last year with sliding his foot under jumpshooters (Marbury, Francis, Jho).

Bowen is crafty. He made it look like he was just backing off, but he chose the route that caused maximum amount of contact. He could have stepped out sideways or any other way that involved actually lifting his feet off the ground. Instead, he opted to drag his feet all the way alongside CP as he backed up. Then he throws his hands up and gives his typical disgusting "what did I do" look.

The funniest thing about Bowen is, he gives that "what did I do?!?!" look even after the most obvious incidents. Like a couple years ago, he takes a charge on Ray Allen, and while the two are getting up, he kicks Ray Allen square in the back. Then of course since the ref didn't see it, he looks around in a daze while Ray Allen reacts to it by getting in his face, making Ray look like the bad guy.

How he's yet to get is face smashed in is really beyond me actually. I remember Vince Carter was ready to ruin him one night after he was head butted by Bowen, and also thrown to the ground after a three by Bowen.

Here is a good rule for Bowen, Don't Straddle someone like that, and put them in a vulnerable position. Kind of looks like he wanted to keep Paul down too. If you want to struggle for the ball slide in and get a Jump Ball. When you come down on a person like that, and you start kicking around on them, its pretty bad. To stand up for Paul a little bit, if someone straddles me while im on the ground, then comes down on me like that, Im going to get a little bit squirmy too. Looks like to me, Pauls main intention was just trying to get up and get out from between his legs.

I think they give Bowen the option of either a two game suspension or a two foot amputation. That should solve the problem. Sure seems like he has wayward feet.

The slow motion also shows Paul getting a shot in on Parker's groin before he and Bowen get into their scrum--watch Parker's reaction

I wonder how long they'll let Paul get away with hitting guys where it counts?

This is pretty shocking to me. Bowen has done, much, much worse. But hey, I guess it had to happen sometime. How many times can one player kick others without there finally being some sort of punishment?

About time!

(I'm such a hypocrite - the Detroit Bad Boys are my second-favorite team after these Mavs...)

But Bowen is an ass...

Bowen has definitly done worse. I think this is the league finally realizing that if the same player keeps accidentally people then it may not be an accident.

The great thing about the timing of this suspension is that Udoka's already out. That means the Spurs are facing Billups, Hamilton and Prince withouth their two best perimeter defenders.

Bruce Bowen of San Antonio, who has the longest active consecutive games played streak in the NBA, won't play Friday night after he was suspended earlier in the day.

Streak ends

Bruce Bowen had played in the most consecutive games among active NBA players until he was suspended Friday. A look at the top five:
Name Games
Bruce Bowen 500
Andre Miller 431
Tayshaun Prince 394
Dwight Howard 312
DeShawn Stevenson 232

Bowen was suspended one game without pay for using his leg to hit New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul in a game Wednesday night. A foul was called on Paul in the third quarter and Bowen retaliated by kicking Paul.

The Spurs are in Detroit for a game Friday night.

Bowen began his streak on Feb. 28, 2002. Bowen has played and started 500 straight games, the most in the league. It began on Feb. 28, 2002.

The longest consecutive games streak will now be owned by Andre Miller, who has 431 consecutive games played and 430 consecutive starts.

Besides his streak, Bowen will lose about $373,000.

I forgot about this one incident when he played in Wake Forest. They were playing against N.C. State and he intentionally elbowed Julius Hodge in the groin. I forgot if he was punished or not, i don't think he was.

Bowen received a flagrant foul in a later game for kneeing Suns point guard Steve Nash in the groin while trying to clear space.
it's baffling how he's never been suspended for any of the above mentioned "incidences".

He was punished actually with a suspension for the first game of the ACC Tournament which Wake lost. Then Wake flamed out in round 2 with a pretty good team that year (a #2 seed). I know some people argued that the punch to Hodge's groin really hurt the momentum of that team.

It was one of several cheap shots that Paul hit the opposition with at Wake even though it was the only one that got punished. I'd be surprised if this trend hadn't continued in the NBA although I can't say I've watched a ton of Hornets games to say whether or not this is the case.

Stern FTW!

At least Paul wasn't injured...
