Yeah, I don't think dying after you've retired in a helicopter crash is a legitimate reason for a team not associated with him to retire his number. It's a stretch..a huge stretch. I'd be much more ok with them retiring Duncan's number...and no, he doesn't even have to die (and no, I'd never retire Duncan's number even if he died with a plane full of nuns carrying food to needy children in Africa). The battles between him and Dirk are legendary and will always be a part of Mavericks lore.
