Chicago JK will become famous soon enough
Default Red on Danny

"We made a mistake letting [Danny] Fortson go," Auerbach said. He has said that before, something that caused Fortson's eyes to light up when told of the remark. "It all boils down to one thing: You can't always be the retaliator. You've got to be the instigator once in a while. Sometimes, you have to beat the [bad word] out of the other guy before they beat the [bad word] out of you."

So let's address a few of Red's points and, in the holiday spirit of giving, see if there's something we can do, trying to be realistic about what the Celtics have and what they might get.

Fortson: He would be great in Boston. Alas, the Mavericks like him, too, and would be disinclined to do a Fortson-Eric Williams deal or even one that included Tony Battie and a salary to balance things out. "We really like Danny's toughness and the way he clears space for our other rebounders," Mavs owner Mark Cuban said via email. "Plus, he sets the tone and example for our guys on how to rebound." Fortson would like to play more than he's playing in Dallas (11-plus minutes a game.) Danny Ainge should see whether he can pry him away.

Chicago JK... it's not a bad trade idea. I don't believe Battie is a good player but he is a legit 6'11", and plays a center's game. The problem with the trade is Battie would not get off the bench in Nellie's system.

Unfortunately, as we've already pointed out, Fortson had already (foolishly) played the role of instigator against the Suns, so he was unavailable to be even a retaliator when he was really needed against Malone and the Lakers.

Fortson talks as big as his butt, but so far, hasn't shown much evidence of being able to deter rough play against the Mavericks, other than that inflicted by rookie forwards from Serbia who dare to drive to the hoop for a dunk in blowout wins over the Mavericks. He just doesn't seem to inspire much fear in the bona fide bad asses of the NBA. I don't know....maybe it's the WNBA hairstyle and the Hillary Clinton headband.

Memo to Fortson: (someone read it for him)--Yes, the Mavericks need you to play hard, and to play physically. But you have to play at least semi-productively and semi-intelligently, so that they can have you out on the floor when they need your style of play. Otherwise, Nellie might as well send you back to Red to light his cigars.

Still....Having Eric Williams on this team wouldn't be a bad thing.

The guy is a solid DEFENDER(something this team seems to have a lack of), and has a decent post-up game; he can get to the line very frequently.

I wouldn't be TOO upset if Fortson was ever dealt for this guy....

It won't happen but I won't exactly be shedding any tears for Fort leaving either...

Dallas trades: PF Danny Fortson (2.5 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 0.0 apg in 11.2 minutes)
SG Michael Finley (16.0 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 3.0 apg in 38.2 minutes)

Dallas receives: SG Paul Pierce (22.3 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 5.7 apg in 37.8 minutes)
PF Vin Baker (14.4 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 1.7 apg in 32.4 minutes)
Change in team outlook: +14.4 ppg, +1.4 rpg, and +3.9 apg.

Boston trades: SG Paul Pierce (22.3 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 5.7 apg in 37.8 minutes)
PF Vin Baker (14.4 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 1.7 apg in 32.4 minutes)
Boston receives: PF Danny Fortson (2.5 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 0.0 apg in 13 games)

They would still have a decent shooting guard, and their frontcourt will look much better

Lineup:

Banks/James
Finley/Welsch
Jones/Williams/Brown
McCarty/Najera
Battie/Forston/Lafrentz

....leaving Dallas with a starting lineup of

Nash, Pierce, Jamison, Walker, Nowitzki?

Too bad all of Pierce's teammates seem to hate him.

I have only seen nationally televised games but I thought he really shut down Malik Rose especially and the SPurs in general. I also like this one move he amde on Manu. MAnu was driving to the basket and Fortso Din't foul him with his arms or upper body... but Fort rammed Manu's knees with his own giant knee and really slowed MAnu down for the entire game. I think Fort did the mAnu one for Dirk. : D I also remember all the Spurs players kissing his butt after the game too. lol

this trade would never go through. The celtics would never trade away their 3 best players for finley and lafrentz. I know ainge is getting impattient but it is definetly a stretch.

It is pretty much the same thing, mightytoine. Pierce is a parinial all-star with talent through the roof. He is as pure of scorer as there is in the NBA. i doubt that that boston would give away the ony hope of their franchise along with the revamped vin baker just for finely who isnt as good as pierce...and has a worse contract.

Tony Battie is so hurt he cannot practice. Do you really want him here?

Pierce is a two time All Star, perenial All Stars are ones who make the team every year. Pierce has not proved that yet. Plus Pierce is a ball hog who cares more about his points, rebounds and assists then he does about winning.

Eric WIlliams is a streaky player who is working for a contract extention. You do not want him on this team.
