In track, and other sports, do people worry that they will be beat up if they set a new record? Do you want the current 100 meter dash record to never be broken? Come on, that should not be considered! These people already get paid MILLIONS. They should keep things in perspective, more than the average man actually. Certainly, not attack someone with premeditation.

I can't help but to feed the trolls.
A runner's goal is to run faster than everyone else. There's no other aspect to the sport. That's not just how they set a record, that's how they win. That's their championship. The argument that makes more sense would be if the runner was already out ahead of the competition and attempted to break a record for the fastest time run without shoes. Even that isn't close though because running isn't a team sport. If this is were the all star break and we were talking about a 3 point shootout competition then your argument would make sense.
This Mavericks team, including Jason Terry, has one and only one record that they are trying to beat: "Dallas Mavericks Team with the Most NBA Championships in One Season." They want to be atop that leader board with "1". Anything that may get in the way of beating that record is just that: in the way. I also don't think they'll mind if it gets tied a few times.
