Mavs Make Cuts Down To 15
Darvin Ham and Jared Newson were waived on Wednesday afternoon, carving the roster down to the maximum 15 bodies. I’ll say now what I’ve said before: while some other supposed “candidates’’ to be released have had some ups and downs – notably DJ Mbenga, the affable 7-foot athlete who really needs to start showing something around here, and Moe Ager, the former top pick who now has the look and feel of future trade filler – the releases of Ham and Newson were predictable, smart moves.
I knew this about Texas Tech product Ham from the very first day of camp, when I asked how old Darvin is. Mavs exec Donnie Nelson looked at me, winked, and said, “right around our age.’’ The suggestion was clear: Darvin was moving from the broadcast booth to the court as a camp body. Still, the 6-7, 240-pound Ham started two of the preseason games (at center, no less) and served as a mentor to similarly bullish Brandon Bass.
Newson, a rookie out of Tennessee-Martin, might get another shot with the Mavs, should they again need a body. The 6-5 swingman was solid with the Mavs’ summer-league team and played in seven preseason games.
But Newson isn’t Ager, and Ham isn’t DJ – not in terms of potential on the court or in terms of attractiveness in a future trade.
