Default What sold me on AJ

This was brought up a couple of times on the NO Gameday Thread but I thought I would resurrect it again. The game was all but finished in the later stages of the 4th quater and NO was getting some open looks at some 3's that were not contested by either Jet or DA. It seemed there were not fighting through screens tough enough to be able to put a hand up in the shooters face. Now Nelson would have just let it slide since the game was all but over, but AJ took as a chance to let his gaurds know that it was uncalled for. He called a timeout and started really getting into both players faces. Poor Jet looked kinda stunned by it. You can tell it worked because once they got back on the floor you could see the hustle again in there games. Some people may overlook this, but I think this is HUGE for our development into becoming what this team can aspire to be. Because of these moves and others like pulling Dirk when he misses defensive assingments has totally sold me on this cat. I hope Cuban will resolve any contract issues AJ may have and put it to rest. Can you imagine if AJ took this team to the Finals and becomes free and clear in the offseason....he may have a few teams interested in his services. Get er' Done Cubes!!

It didn't really sell me on AJ. I would've liked to see that when we were having problems with them in the 1st or 2nd quarter. The camera never really got up on him much during a timeout so maybe he did get into their faces.

What sold me was when he sat out Dirk to tell him he wasn't playing any D.

And Dirk came back into the game smiling. The message wasn't sent but I give AJ props for doing it. I never thought he would've done it to Dirk.

That sequence was illustrative of what I like about AJ and what worries me about AJ at the same time.

I think it was good because he's trying to get his system in place and he needs to have our defensive players principles drilled into the players' heads so they just react...and he has less than 20 games to get that done.

The concern, of course, is that that level of intensity won't work in an 82 game season much less season after season. Hopefully Avery knows how to pick his spots.

If you make the point and players learn from it, you dont have to make the point repeatedly. They form good habits. Every once in a while they forget, and you reinforce it, til the habit is ingrained. You train the kids, and they grow up. On the other hand, if you make the point, and you are still having to tell them for several years, you have a bad player, not a bad coach.
