WASHINGTON (TICKER) -- The Washington Wizards apparently have re-signed veteran center-forward Popeye Jones, who will likely serve as a mentor for No. 1 draft pick Kwame Brown.
The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that Jones, a free agent who was acquired from the Denver Nuggers before last season in a trade for Tracy Murray, has agreed to a one-year deal. The newspaper did not disclose terms.
The 6-8 Jones came off the bench to average 3.6 points and 4.9 rebounds last season. He sat out the first 29 games after breaking his left thumb in the season opener.
An eight-year veteran, Jones has aspirations of being a coach and is considered a team leader. He would serve as an excellent tutor for Brown, who was drafted out of high school.
The 31-year-old Jones also has played for Dallas, Toronto and Boston
