I'm in Houston now, but as I remember it, 1.75's of the cheapest vodka at the Majestic used to run for about $8.99 a bottle- just about the same price that you'll find at the Goody Goody in Lewisville (I've never visited the Colony location)... Here in wretched Houston however, the cheapest vodka that you'll find at the cheapest store (Spec's) runs for about $9.29 for a 1.75 and the strangely lower-per-volume price of $5.29 for a liter (of Taaka or Fleishman's)...

Yes, definitely hoppy. That's the defining characteristic.

As for other beers that are similar...well, I guess Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is what you would call an "American pale ale." If you ever see "IPA" on a bottle, that is an "India Pale Ale." From what I understand, this goes back to the days when Europeans would send beer on boats to their countrymen in India, and to help the beer survive the long journey without spoiling they would have to add something to it or whatever. Evidently adding a crapload of hops fit the bill. So, any "IPA" is going to be similar in character.

I lived in England for about a year and had a steady diet of dark beers. Unfortunately I developed an allergy so my beer drinking days are very much gone. Before this tragic event my favorite beers were Duvel (Belgian) and Belhaven Scottish Ale. Almost brings a tear to the eye....

How much beer do you drink to become allergic ;P

Or is it the other way around and you're beer intolerant because you didn't drink for a prolonged period of time...

Food allergies typically come about with over exposure. I was pretty much a daily consumer (one or two pints) when I was over there, but I don't believe this can be predicted. And it is clearly the case that not everyone (or perhaps even most people) will develop an allergy. I can drink American light beers every now (once every couple of months or so) and then without suffering too much.

I guess I'm late to this thread...

Beer is pure proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. Ben Franklin said that, and I believe it. It took me a little while to adjust to the taste of beer, but now I think I can honestly say I've never tasted a beer I didn't like.

I always strive to try new stuff every chance I get, so my favorites are constantly changing... currently in my fridge is a couple of remaining Sam Adams Oktoberfest, a fresh 12-pack of Sam Adams Winter Lager, and a 6-pack of Guinness Draught. Sam Adams is always delicious no matter what beer you choose.

Hefeweizens are wonderful on a warm summer evening. Dark, rich and complex beers are great for cold winter nights. Budweiser quenches my thirst at Mavs games.

For whoever asked about pumpkin ales, I was at BJ's in Plano at 75 and 15th St last weekend and had their seasonal pumpkin spice ale. It was my first taste of a beer like that, and it was very very tasty.

I haven't been told of this Majestic place until now, but I live not far from Addison so it sounds like I may have a new place to shop...

Now here's the real question: any other homebrewers here?

At the moment - Beck's.

It's a question of mood and situation for me.

When thirst is one of the decisive factors, it has to be a bitter, strong Pils like Beck's or Jever - rarely a Flensburger.

When in a relaxed mood, I'll eventually change to a Weizen.
Then my favourite pick's Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier.

When I've been in die US, to me, most of the beers I tested during my one-month roadtrip around California seemed pretty much lighter than the "usual" german beer.

Don't know where this impression comes from, but I felt like I never got really drunk.

And for the light-beer in the US - no comment.

We were stayin' at the house of an ICQ mate in Riverside for some days, and I introduced Paulaner Hefeweizen Dunkel to the uncle of our mate - he fell asleep after two thirds of the bottle.

To be living near Kloster Andechs has to be pretty advantageous!

Yes. And as Munich isn´t far away either I´ve got a large choice of good beers.

I think the beer which is closest to american beer is "Kölsch". Beside of Weissbier I like it very much too and you can drink a lot of it without getting drunk.

The supporters of my local soccer club Hertha BSC Berlin aren't that imaginative, their songs are quite dull to say the least. And a Olympic Stadium Berlin with 80k seats and only 35k fans to fill them doesn't help in this matter. I just love how the two groups in the video animate each other to sing even louder.

Yeah, now that you say it - that's quite true. As my parents are of rhenisch (ha - looked that word up - "rheinisch") origin, I've also quite a lot of occasions to get me some Früh Kölsch. I do like it a lot, but more as a seldom special - I think it would get dull after some weeks. I like my little variations.
Now - my cousins are from Augsburg and every Christmas they bring some crates of "Helles" - that's great stuff. Would that I could get it here in Berlin.

Now, to spin the discourse to a new subject - do you guys have some local specialities of the art of brewing that we should know?

As I'm from Berlin, theres Berliner Weisse (Berlin's Whiteness).
And as I found out, theres a Wikipedia article - on the english version even.

Berliner Weiße is more of a cocktail than a beer. As I´m a proponent of the "pure" beers, I´ve never tasted it before. Also as you mentioned, it´s hard to get in Bavaria.

Normally I don´t like shandy like for example "Radler" (beer with lemonade), "Russ" (wheat beer with lemonade) or "Mohr" (wheat beer with coke) very much, depite it´s very popular here (especially in summer). But as Berliner Weiße has some cult status I would try it next time, if I´m in Berlin.

The Berliner Weiße is okay once in a while and you are right it's not a "real beer" . More like a limonade that you can drink empty in a few secs ... just like cocktails.

My favorite beer is Becks but I love "Helles Hefeweizen" too. Well since I moved to Berlin I drink Berliner Pilsener from time to time but it's not that good. I would go with other beer first. Beeing from northern Germany I like Flensburger and it tastes good and simply has the best sound when opened right

Yes beside of my beloved Hefeweizen, Pils is the next choice for me, because I´m not overly excited about Export beers, with exception of Oktoberfest beers.

Becks is a good choice I like it too and the best Pils are brewed in the North anyhow. In the South they can´t brew good Pils, equally they can´t brew good Hefeweizen in the North.
