I do not recall ANY leader of our country elicting such negative responses on trips outside of the USA.
the supporters of bush will answer that he gets the rap for making tough decisions and taking unpopular positions that are best for our country.
I say that he is finding that his decisions have proven to be poorly made. while many of the protestors are screaming just because they don't like the USA and would scream no matter what, many have legitimate cause for their protests.

I would say that reagan got almost the same during the deployment of the pershing missiles.
IMO a lot of this is the result of being the only big guy on the block, the cop as it were. No one really needs a cop these days since the ruskies are no more. Europe is irrelevant.
If China began to aggressively expand much of this would be muted, but right now, it's the teenagers bitching at their parents. They need to be careful, someone needs to steer the ship.

I clearly remember when Clinton went to Greece and other European countries eliciting huge violent protest during the Serbian/Kosovo conflict. It's the same with every president. When I lived in Brazil, Jimmy Carter came to Rio and there were protesters everywhere "Gringo, Go Home". No doubt, there is a little more rhetoric this time around, however, Chavez, admittedly has organized his goons to perform protests wherever Bush goes during his trip.

Ralph Peters on what really happened. Our media really does us a dis-service by lacking any idea of context above and beyond the salacious headline. Pretty pathetic.
http://www.nypost.com/seven/03112007...lph_peters.htm
Quote:
March 11, 2007 -- AS our president arrived in Brazil last week, the U.S. media made it sound as if Latin America had erupted in flames. TV news featured flying tear-gas canisters; a typical newspaper headline read, "Angry Crowds Rally Against President in Brazil."
Message: Bush is hated. He's ruined our relations with the hemisphere. Nobody loves us anymore - and it's all his fault.
Well, venceremos, muchachos, and no pasdaran!
If you bothered to read the reports below the headlines, you learned that 6,000 Brazilians had gathered in Sao Paulo to protest Bush's arrival in their country.
Wait a minute - wasn't that 600,000? Or at least 60,000?
Nope. Just 6,000 outraged citizens. Out of Brazil's population of 200 million.
Shucks, down here in Washington you can rally 6,000 activists at a moment's notice to march for equal rights for prairie dogs.
Couldn't Cindy Sheehan have flown down to pump up the numbers a little? (Or Jack "I'm a hero!" Murtha? He'd look studly in a Speedo on a Rio beach . . . )...
.....
Polls show that South Americans have a lower opinion of Chavez, whom they distrust, than of Bush. They've been there, done that. The last thing they want is more conflict.
