We're a culture of instant gratification -- players look more at the upside (3 > 2) than the downside (0 < 2) these days.

The problem is that if you shoot 3s at a fairly pedestrian 35%, you're matching the eFG% of someone shooting twos at a rate of 52.5%. Very few players can shoot 52.5% on twos other than a center once in a while. A three point shooter can walk it up every play and shoot a three.
If you shoot 40% on threes, then that matches an eFG% of shooting twos of 60%.
Steph Curry is shooting 52.9% from three right now. To shoot twos at that rate, you'd need to make over 79% of your shots.
It's just not even possible to be that efficient that often. Midrange twos are the worst shot in basketball and inside dunks/layups are a novelty that spaces the floor for more threes.

The context on the Melo shot was the Rockets coaches had been emphasizing all training camp to stop taking long twos and take more threes. Melo made a good fake, shook his defender, and made a very Melo comfortable shot, but still had the coaches in the back of his mind when it went in. The announcers found it hilarious.

And threes draw defenders out so you hopefully get more layups/dunks. In contrast, the mid range actually keeps everyone tightly packed. Basically, spread the defense out as thin as possible creating space for passing and ball movement.

So Porzingis is turning out to be a tool. Dude needs to lighten up. I know the Knicks are in a constant state of distress, but he just seems prickly. He should channel some of his aggression into staying on a basketball court for consecutive games sometime.

@ShamsCharania: Minnesota has traded Jimmy Butler and Justin Patton to Philadelphia for Robert Covington, Dario Saric and a 2022 second-round draft pick, league sources tell me and @JonKrawczynski.
@ShamsCharania: Sources: Philadelphia's Jerryd Bayless has also been traded to Minnesota as part of Jimmy Butler deal. Covington/Saric/Bayless/2022 2nd for Butler and Patton.
@wojespn: Jimmy Butler and the Sixers fully expect to reach a deal on a long-term contract this summer, league sources tell ESPN. Sixers made deal with plans to add Butler to a Big Three with Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

Think got this from a Ringer podcast. They said that GMs are very hesitant to deal stars within their own conference. But even then four 1st rounders look infinitely better. I assume Thibs wanted to absolutely get someone who can help now, which is the case with Covington and Saric. Why should he care about future when he won't likely make it past this season anyway? All he wants is win as many games as possible for his own résumé.

I actually don't think thats a bad deal...especially since Buter didn't want to be there and everyone knew it.
Covington is a very good player with a lot of similar skill as Butler and not as good of a scorer. Saric is a solid player who can stretch the floor and fit in well.
KAT
Saric
Covington
Wiggins
Teague
is actually a pretty solid lineup although the bigs may struggled on D since neither KAT or Saric are good defenders.
Covington's contract is also not bad at all.

Minny wanted to win right away-- not take Houston's 22nd pick every other year for 8 years.

Or they could do like Boston and trade some of those picks for a better "win now" piece than what they got (like Kyrie/Hayward), plus have some picks to build with (like Tatum)... But I don't expect Minny's FO to be that creative.

I think the 4 firsts had steep stipulations otherwise they woulda done it. Glad Houston didn't get him, so fine with me. Good for the sixers. Hinkie should get a ring if they win it all.

I actually think this is the best of the three most rumored deals (also including the bad players/picks from Houston and Richardson/no cap relief from Miami) because Minnesota is desperately trying to avoid the tax and this makes that happen. Covington has a great value contract and the Wolves will only have about a $6M cap hold for Saric in 18 months, so they are cost-controlled, efficient uses of cap space. You get about 140 games to evaluate Saric to see if you want to keep him around or one/both can be valuable trade chips.
I get the arguments for either of the other two deals but I think this one has fewer unpredictable variables associated with it. It wouldn't totally shock me if Minnesota kept their foot on the gas and ended up making the playoffs after all of this, since they can use Jimmy's absence as a rallying point of sorts, but it's probably more likely that the 4-9 start or whatever it is, is close to how this roster is going to perform.

I haven't really been paying attention, but why is Melo leaving the Rockets? Is he taking too many shots? Not hustling? Just a bad fit? I know he's not the same player he once was despite the fact that he probably still thinks he is, but I figured he can still knock down open shots.

Exactly my thoughts. Even considering that many thought Melo wouldn't fit in Houston, now it doesn't make sense. Either the Rockets have moved on (they seem to be high on one of their two-way players), or Melo actually thinks he's still a star and deserves a prime role on whatever team. Thought he was just ring-chasing tbh. and HOU offered the best shot. Shrugs...

I'm one of the few outside of GS that actually likes Draymond Green, but I find it odd that he brought up KD's upcoming free agency. Not sure what that has to do in a early game of the season.

KD is actually the one bringing it up. He's already been saying in the papers that he's looking forward to the off-season and getting his mega-contract and won't be taking any less this time. I guess an easy road to multiple championships along with $30 million a year isn't enough.
Green is a hot-head but I can see where this kind of crap would piss him off.

So because Durant has told reporters he hasn't made up his mind....that makes it ok for Green to not pass him the ball on a crucial possession in an early regular season game?
No.

I hate when players have something to say about a contract situation of someone other than themselves. Or upcoming free agent decision. For as good as the Warriors are they are fkin retarded with some things. That awkward interview with Myers and Kerr about KD free agency with KD and the team right there... and they joked saying no he can't ask for anything, steph can because he was here before and hes earned it. Even if it's true you can't say that, whether a flat joke or a factual statement you can't say that on tv to the world. This is maybe the thinnest skinned superstar ever. That was absolutely retarded. And they act like KD isn't the most important player on that roster. Steph is a game changer but KD is the guy they go to to get his own shot when they need it most. They don't have 3 rings in 4 yrs without him. And hell they could have 4 rings in 4 yrs if Draymond isn't such a bitch kickin dudes in the nuts everywhere.
I would bet there is another side to this. If Green is really that unhappy I think there is a lot more going on in that locker room, and maybe KD has said something about leaving in some other arguments. Still though, you don't talk about someone else's money, you don't call them a bitch if you want them back. At least the Warriors will die sooner than they should because of this. This also looks even worse for Green because what prompted this was him playing retarded to close the game. He grabbed the rebound and then refused to give the ball to KD. Instead he dribbled across half court and tried to slice through 3 defenders with almost no time left. Literally a 0 bbiq play. And all that I saw KD say was give me the ball, then Green went the hell off and brought up shit you don't bring up, especially during a game... wtf. But again, Myers set the example with his shit ass comments.

GS got their asses kicked by the Rockets. Mavs have a real shot if they keep that momentum from the Jazz game going.

Gotta love what happens in Golden State. It's not only that Green is obviously right, but also that the national conversation slowly picks up the "Durant has chosen rings over legacy" narrative. It's so satisfying to see that KD still doesn't get the respect he thinks he deserves. Will never be a champion, will always be weak unless he takes his own franchise to a title. These Warriors titles will be so meaningless in a few years. All we'll remember is how LeBron beat them all by himself with a Cleveland team that shouldn't even have made the Finals.
