Is the Croshere deal setting us up for a Deadline deal?
Austin "Powers" Croshere and Jerry Stackhouse both have expiring contracts this year; their combined salaries will be about equivalent to a Max contract. Is it possible that the Mavs are looking ahead with this deal to either a late summer or deadline deal? Could we turn those two expiring contracts, plus maybe a draft pick or a PPod or something, into that superstar to go alongside Dirk? Pretty sure Croshere, Stackhouse + PPod would be almost identical in salary to AI.

Very interesting thought, you may have something there...
But I doubt it, it just doesn't seem AJ's style to get AI. Maybe KG?

Cuban doesn't do deadline deals anymore. He doesn't appear willing to take back big contracts.

Teams in contention generally don't make major deadline deals anyway.
They did make a deadline deal only two season ago, but it certainly wasn't major.

this actually makes some sense. I think alot of teams will be scrambling to get themselves way under the cap this next year in hopes that Lebron James doesn't sign that extension with the Cavs and becomes a FA. And the Sixers may fall into that category along with some other teams.

I hope it's true. Would be nice if we can get either a Paul Pierce or Jason Richardson by the deadline!

I am all for getting a star, but please, not AI. Maybe Ray Allen? We could end up sending someone in a deal for a sign and trade for one of the free agents that haven't signed yet (Kaman?).
From Hoopsworld.com:
the Clipper may be forced to move off a player they want to keep in order to create enough playing time for all their guys, and they still have to get Chris Kaman locked up – rumor is he is not as interested in remaining a Clipper as you might think, and he could be a guy that gets traded before he gets resigned. The new look Clips, look impressive, but they still have some roster work to do.

I don't think we'll see a deadline deal, but maybe a deal in the next couple weeks.

I don't think so. I do think it is setting the team up to have some options though - just in case.

Umm... you sure about that?
Rasheed Wallace in 04
Nazr Muhammed in 05
Both guys went to contending teams and had big roles in their respective team's championships.

I did some quick math before starting the thread, and it looks like those two guys would work for Iverson, Pierce, or Allen (didn't think about J-Rich, but he'd work too); could also be a situation where we take on a star plus a crap contract, i.e. Redd plus one from Milwaukee. I don't really think it's going to happen, but it's always fun to speculate.

I really don't think we get another big star, they already said they dont want to change the team that much.. and that would be a huge change.

I don't think it is setting up for a "deadline" deal, unless an awesome one presents itself.
I think they sign a "defensive, shooter" of a guard. James, Bucknor, maybe even Eddie House if the others fall out. Not sure House plays "D" well enough, but maybe he could be taught because he is a very good shooter, IMO.
Then the pieces are together again to make a run. They have the guards, the swingmen, and the Bigs to play just about any style.
They have room for Powell, and Benga to grow, and have still lowered the $$$, allowing for the extensions of JHoward, Dirk, and Terry.
Next year they "know" if Ager (Stacks possible replacement), and Powell (Croshere's possible replacement) have enough game -- if they do, then they let Stack and Croshere go, saving more money, and still working towards getting better.
They are close, but they still need to make that "last" move for the correct "situational" player.

Redd would be perfect for the Mavs. He's a great shooter, a good guy that won't mind getting less touches, and can score 25 at will.

bob, I was thinking the same thing in the car today and AI was the first name that came up. He and KG are the most likely to be moved sooner rather than later, as both teams look closer to the end than the beginning. Only reason Pierce doesn't fall into this catagory is because of the all the youth they have, which might make them dangerous in a year or so. But lets look at this on another level.
Guys that are buried and have talent, like a Pietrus, or solid players that are on teams with other bad contracts, Desmend Mason or Mike Miller, and create a package that would be interesting. So with about 14-15 million in expiring contracts for next year along with a few trading chips, we could be in some major trade rumors.
I for one am in HUGE support in getting a TRUE second option on this team. Dirk is the best one man show in the business, why not help him with a true 20 pt. scorer?
