Spybot's memory resident "Protection of over-all system settings". Basically if it is running and something tries to modify the registry it prompts you whether you want to allow or disallow it.

It is a part of Spybot v 1.3. You can download it here, just select one of the mirrors.

When you get it installed, run it and select Mode, Advanced... when you do that on the left hand pane at the bottom will be some sub sections.... one of which is labeled Tools. Click the Tools sub-section. Under Tools, click on Resident and make sure the box next to "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active." is checked.

Also, I reccomend Immunizing your 'puter as well. The immunization blocks downloads of known bad news files.

The Tools section has a ton of cool stuff for protecting your computer, like IE tweaks... System Startup (you can control what gets loaded at startup from here), System Internals (fixes broken registry entries most commonly left behind by uninstalled programs that don't clean themselves very well), Hosts file (it adds HOSTS file entries for bad bad websites so you don't go there, it redirects you to the loopback IP 127.0.0.1).
