Ah now it's the democrat union label race card. So many groups, so little time. Couldn't be that he's an inexperienced hollow suit.

Quote:
DENVER — Racial prejudice is being cited among senior union leaders to explain Sen. Barack Obama’s difficulty in winning over support from white rank-and-file members.

Obama (D-Ill.) is counting on organized labor to help win him key electoral votes in Ohio, Michigan and other battleground states. Karen Ackerman, political director for the AFL-CIO, acknowledged that Obama’s race is an important factor for some union members.

“This race is very complicated because there is an African-American candidate for president,” said Ackerman. “We feel there is a racial component for some union members, but we’re confident we can overcome that.”

Some in the labor movement say that Obama’s race has made it difficult for a significant number of union members to support him over Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), the presumptive GOP nominee.

It could, sure. But you don't claim to speak for those union members, do you? Could also be that he's a black man. Right? Or, are you saying it couldn't possibly be that?

I think dude was throwing out the alternative hypothesis, in commenting on the lack up such in the bit he quoted - which focused on only one explanation for why someone wouldn't vote for Obama.

Given what you know about the typical union member, which hypothesis holds more water?

A) He's a black guy.

B) He's a hollow suit.

Three men now under arrest in Denver on federal and local gun and drug charges spent last Saturday night discussing their hatred for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, according to documents made public by the government late Tuesday. One of the suspects allegedly talked about killing Obama on the "day of his Inauguration" using a .22-250 caliber sniper rifle and high-powered scope--the same model rifle that was found in one of the suspect's possession by police during a routine traffic stop last weekend.

The three men under arrest, whom authorities believe to be white supremacists, talked about how they hated Obama because he was black, how they "could not believe how close he [Obama] was to becoming president, and how no "n----r" should ever live in the White House, a female witness told the Secret Service, according to the documents. (The witness is unnamed in the papers.)

Makes you wonder if America is really ready. Would hope our generation is but it might take a couple more..

No "one" is(or will ever be) "ready" in your opinion if you think this outlier proves anything.

Well, it's not like the folks who want to kill him are very intelligent - they got caught (and the election is still months away!)

Dude,
I don't think this is a single anomaly. I'd bet on atleast another attempt, possibly multiple. I also do think it is a representation for a not insignificant portion of America, as far as attitude goes, even if the individual call to action may be different and not so extreme.

UD,

Of course it's not a single anomaly. As a white person go spend some time in an all-black community and see if you get a few upside your head. Racism is rampant all over the world, less so I imagine in this country than most.

We just love to talk about it more.

Nice. You seem to suggest that we're all racist...you just don't think that fact should be part of the political discourse. Have it your way, my man. Have it your way.

What I suggest is not that we are ALL racist, but that racism exists throughout the world in all cultures, all strata, all colors.

If Barack Hussein Obama wants to continue and throw out the race card, go for it. Folks who are not consumed with misplaced guilt will just conclude that he's just another person crying racism to try and get over. ESPECIALLY someone like obama, poor mistreated person that he has been for so long. Bulls***.

Like Mac'08 is supposed to just take being called a racist and let it go. F that dude man.

You said something like "as a white man, try walking in a black neighborhood." McCain is a white man. Did you mean to exclude him from the "white man" you talked about. DOES or DOES NOT McCain feel what you suggested a "white man" feels when he walks in a black neighborhood.

People who call NBA fans/season-ticket-holders racists are funny.

(And btw, do any of you know truly what color the other is?)

Yes McCain would probably be subjected to the same racism that you or I would be subjected to in a predominantly black neighborhood. About the same extent that a black dude would in a predominantly white neighborhood.

The black dude is gonna get "hit upside the head" walking the streets of Frisco, because he's black?

What, and you don't? You don't think a white guy walking in a predominantly black neighborhood (Queens, NY perhaps?) would be subjected to racism? You don't think he wouldn't be in danger of being mugged or beaten?

Sure, that same thing could happen to a black man in a white neighborhood, but it's probably more likely to happen to a white man in a black neighborhood. The most racist people I have personally met are black. I don't understand why, that's just how it has been in my lifetime.

Wow.

White Jew from Detroit here - blacks hated Canadians more than they hated me, so go figure... Got my ass kicked most by white Texans in a middle class neighborhood growing up (not sure why - y'all hate Jews too?)

EDIT: When I re-read my last post, I noticed that it looked like I was getting my ass kicked by Texans in Detroit (but alas, all the Texan ass-whoopin's occurred in Texas...)

I'm not saying there aren't any white racists. I'm just saying that from my personal experience it has been more predominant amoung blacks.

I lived for a year in Alabama, because of a job transfer. I worked in downtown Birmingham, and the staff there was predominantly black. I never got my ass kicked as you described, but here's what I noticed... There is a Civil Rights Institute in downtown Birmingham, with a huge statue of a cop with dogs beating up a black man laying on the ground. Not a day went by where I didn't hear some black person complaining about something some white person did or said. It seemed to me they were LOOKING for some reason to be offended by whitey. I have never seen a white person just looking for a reason to be offended by a black person. Yes, racism is alive and well in Birmingham, but it's not the whites hating the blacks. It's the other way around.

You don't think hate is a two-way street?

If you're a racist, chances are you're going to encounter racism more often (that goes for people of every race...)

Did I not say, "I'm not saying there aren't any white racists."

And no, hate is not always a two-way street. I have no hatred of blacks. My sister, who is white, married a black man, and they have two daughters. Another sister adopted a bi-racial baby. However, I saw first hand the hatred of blacks against whites while I was in Alabama. So is my being white my side of that two-way street? Is it incumbent upon me to "pay" for the actions of others, which caused this racism in America?

Edit: UD, the more I think of your quote "You don't think hate is a two-way street?", the more I have a problem with it. Here's my interpretation of what you're saying... Blacks who are racists hate whites, because there is something whites did to deserve it, or because whites hate blacks. This line of reasoning implies it's whitey's fault, and blacks are justified in their hatred of whites. Please tell me I'm wrong, and that this is not your thinking.

If you have any pre-conceived notions about someone based upon their race, then you're continuing the cycle - acknowledging racism only obliges it...

Personally, I experience very little racism in my own life... Not that I don't run into it here & there, but I find that looking a man in the eye as an equal goes a long way in dispelling any pre-conceived notions they might have about ME based on MY race... "Treat others as you would like to be treated" is a highly successful method for breaking down barriers (that Jesus guy was onto something...)

Saying I have pre-conceived notions about someone based upon their race is to say I think everyone of said race is racist. That is not true. I know a lot of black people who are not racist. I simply said of those people I have met who I believe to be racist, most of them are black. And no, acknowledging racism does not oblige it. It just recognizes it for what it is.... unfounded and unwarranted hatred or bias against people of another race.

Oh, I wasn't saying YOU have any pre-conceived notions about people's race - I was speaking about racism in general (I'm here to talk philosophy, not make accusations...)

And like I said - the less you look for racism, the less you're confronted with it...
