This team really makes it difficult to root for team tank. They compete so hard, but DSJ and HB need another young talent for this team to sniff a playoff spot.

@BallinWithBryan: Dallas now playing in their 14th (!) straight clutch game. They’ve played a league-high 31 clutch games this season.

Dallas 7-23
Portland 15-12

@BallinWithBryan: It’s now been a full month of clutch basketball for Dallas. Their last game that wasn’t a clutch one was December 20 against Detroit.

@mcuban: The unfortunate reality is that @Dennis1SmithJr has to learn how to yell and flop in order to get respect

Loved Juniors game tonight. He changed speeds and looked comfortable in the mid range. Some savvy shit from the youngster. Very impressive stuff. He seems to be growing game by game

Salah Mejri's reputation as a tough guy continues to grow, and his team's all for it
https://sportsday.dallasnews.com/dal...ues-grow-teams

Quote:
"He plays hard," Dirk Nowitzki said. "He's a great shot-blocker for us. We usually have Salah in shootaround. And he's The Mej at night. It's two different people. At shootaround, he's a nice guy and can barely move. Then in the evening, The Mej is out. He gets in his compete mode and he doesn't have friends out there. He just wants to help us win. And we love to play with him."
Also, DSJ's reaction to Cuban saying he might need to flop to get calls...

Quote:
"That's what it's looking like," Smith said. "This is my first year in the league. I'm from the 'hood. All the yelling and stuff, we don't really do all that. That'll be something I got to learn how to do. It's unfortunate that that's what it's come down to. But I guess that's what this league is about right now."
The future of the Dallas Mavericks is looking edgy these days.

Dirk never flopped or yelled. If Smith becomes Harden, then I'll be a grumpy cat.

Ellis got to the line aplenty without flopping. Rook just gotta ride it.

Well it's sad that Smith already gets how terrible the officiating really is. Good news is that it's terrible league-wide.

Both Cuban and DSJ will be fined and DSJ will have 3 straight 0 ft games as further punishment. Because stating the obvious is fine worthy apparently. Flopping, which is supposed to be a fine, has become almost a necessary skill thanks to certain dbag ass players and the NBA has allowed it to happen.

That's not how I remember it... Ellis was constantly shafted by the refs, despite attacking the paint frequently (only 4.5 FTA in Dallas, same problem as Dirk's career 5.7 attempts).

Mark Cuban Irked About Officiating Treatment Of Monta Ellis
https://basketball.realgm.com/wireta...of-monta-ellis

Meanwhile Harden is earning 10.3 free throw attempts per game this season to DSJ's 2.5 -- there's a happy-medium here, if the refs allow it... And if not? Dennis has to play the game as it's called.

The worst call tonight for me was the offensive foul they called on DSJ on the fast break against Lillard. He did what he was supposed to do. He slow down to create contact and went to the rim. And they called a bs offensive foul. To me that has nothing to do with being a rookie it's just a plain awful call. That's the kind of call that has NBA fans going nuts, if that is RWB, Harden, Lillard, Curry, etc it's a 3 point play, but for DSJ is not even a no call it's an offensive foul?!?!?! It highlights that refs seriously don't know what a foul is much like the NFL has convoluted a catch to the point where refs don't know what the hell a catch is.

What's funny is he got away with doing that to Jokic. It's a smart play to use your body to separate the defender when attacking the rim and absolutely not a foul. Players of Smith's size have to do it to create space.

It was closer to a no call than a call, but honestly I did see Smith extend his arm which generally should result in an offensive foul. The problem is referees are so inconsistent on calls like that. It really seems like the superstars will shoot free throws, while the other guys will get a no call or called for the charge.

For the Mavs to become a legit top four team with GSW, SAS, HOU, and OKC/MIN, they need go-to player that shows up 95% of the nights. DSJ looks like he could be that, but just needs time. HB is not that. He is an excellent 2nd or 3rd option depending on how he's going that night ... kind of like a Klay Thompson to Steph Curry. But we really need another franchise type player out of this draft.

HB is not that. He is an excellent 2nd or 3rd option depending on how he's going that night ... kind of like a Klay Thompson to Steph Curry. But we really need another franchise type player out of this draft.
Ayton, Bagley, Porter (if 100%), and possibly Doncic -- there's your shortlist of possible franchise players, aside from Young... Bamba could be an All-Star, but I don't see that alpha mentality in him to be a franchise guy.

What do we know about Porter though? I’d say the top 4 are Ayton, Bagley, Doncic, Young. I might even put him behind Bamba because we know so little about him. The best thing the Mavs can hope for is that Young continues to shoot up the draft board. If teams like Atlanta or Orland would really consider him in the top 4-5 it greatly helps the Mavs. It would help the Mavs land one of Ayton, Bagley, Doncic. With Porter/Bamba being second options to the Mavs. And I haven’t even mentioned Jackson.

We know plenty about Porter, just not how he'll recover from his injury. If he's 100%, then he's possibly the best player in this draft, even if you just go by his high school performance (averaged 37 PPG and 14 RPG)... Not many prospects drawing comparisons to HoF-caliber guys -- Porter's comp is Kevin Durant.

I wouldn't say plenty. We know he was a crazy high school prospect that scouts thought would transition to the college level well. However, he'll be drafted after only having played two minutes at the college level. Plenty of guys are good in high school and it doesn't necessarily transfer. We're essentially going back to the LeBron/Garnet years where players came directly from high school. Even Greg Oden got one year of college ball before being drafted after being dominant at the high school level and obviously he's playing in China now.

There are two major question marks for me:
1) Back injury - will he ever be the same player?
2) Transition - four years of high school. Two minutes of college ball. How will he transition? We didn't get any dominant or even passable numbers in college so we have no idea how he will do when he's not playing against shorter, less athletic, high school players.

I mean, he could be a flop of Oden/Olowakandi proportions, but he could also be the next Durant/LeBron. It's really hard to say, but there are certainly some questions that aren't going to be fully answered until he put on a uniform.

I dunno why I can't rep most people lol I try to spread it around. I love stories like this but sad he sounds like he was/is a d-bag. I've played with a few smaller guys, but biggest names were PAt Beverly in a random summer pick-up game when I was interning up in Arkansas (between junior and senior years at UofA). No idea why I got the call to join, but walk in to pretty much a group of current basketball guys and some former guys sprinkled in, with some of the better rec guys I knew. Beverly talks shit 24/7 but is actually a pretty cool guy. He hated the switch UofA did to go to the Nike bballs so gave me one.

Other guy was Terrence Newman, who still regularly will play/workout at LA Fitness in uptown Dallas. Incredibly nice guy, and the athleticism difference is surreal. He's a pretty good baller.
